Welcome back!

Space Marine brigades struggle quite a bit to fit in the necessary tools to be a TAC-style list and complete game-objectives. That being said, you have taken a few good units to put you on this path, so here are my recommendations.

Land Speeder Storm: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these are just hot garbage. Over-costed coupled with the -1 to Hit penalty for moving and shooting applying to vehicles means these transports are massively over-costed. Scouts just don't pack enough of a punch to leverage the open-topped rules, and the vehicle doesn't benefit from out CT either, which further de-values it.

I would drop both transports.

The scout sergeants with Combi-weapons should never be in range to be used in tandem with Snipe Rifles (Your snipes should sit backfield and camp objectives in your deployment zone, and Bolter-scouts should be infiltrated up on closer objective - or as screens).

I would switch both Combi-weapons to Snipers

The Grenade-launchers on the Scouts don't give them any real extra punch, and they are better served to carry Shotguns. Also if you give the Sergeants Storm Bolters - that will increase their efficacy for that output of shooting greatly. These are great units that output a ton of firepower for very little cost.

I am a big fan of the Damocles-pattern command Rhino, very fluffy!

Now, with what we cut/changed, that frees up a little over 300 points. I would use these points to get some real heavy weapons into your army.

Options are Dreads, Devastators, or Preds.

I am a fan of the first and second categories, since they leverage our CT. That being said, you don't have a lot of good targets for your Lias deployment, so I would probably lean Devastators in your case. You could also swap out on Scout Bike squad for a regular Land Speeder with dual Multi-Melta to continue use of your telemetry stratagem.

I would probably take 2x Dev squad, I would also probably cut one Whirlwind and purchase a 2x Dual Autocannon Dread to hit transport-style units.

I would convert your 2 5-man Sternguard into one 10-man and SFTS that unit

I would use your Lias deployment on himself, both devs, and your LT so you can drop them in your DZ on your first turn accomplishing two things: Getting superior fire lanes, and 2 making those units immune to an Alpha Strike from your opponent. This is probably the best use of Lias in the new Deep Strike beta rules.

Good luck, and welcome back to the Raven Spire!

I've been gone awhile I now, but I have returned to 8th edition 40k and found it to be interesting to say the least. This is my list I have decided to put together. Thoughts and input would be great.

++ Total: [118 PL, 1999pts] ++

Strategems =

Datalink Telemetry, Hellfire Shells, Cluster Mines, Orbital Bombardment, Masterful Marksmenship, Auspex Scan

Ok I like the list and I have a Raptors Scout army but i have to agree with alot of what Itvyper has said.

1- Upgrade him to have the Emperor's Wrath bolter and have him near the sniper scouts

2- Not liking the combi melta on the sgt. Sniper rifle probably a better option imho.

3- Drop the GL on the one bike and give the Sgt a stormbolter

4- I get the purpose but I think dakka Predators maybe cheaper and more rewarding

5/6- This kills me as it is very fluffy to the army but they are not worth the points

Also look at adding camo cloaks to the scouts so they are -1 to hit over 12" and +2 to your cover save. Its pricey but forces you hug cover and will annoy your opponent as he shooting at your scouts that a 2+ armor save before negative modifiers.

Dreadnought- Quad Autocannon (index) gains chapter tactics and the sheer amount of Lead Farming it will so will surprise people. This is how I equip most of my Dreads now.

1 For the scout bikes just go full storm bolters and give the Sargent a storm bolter.

2 If you want a large amount of indirect fire take a thunderfire cannon over a whirlwind.

3 1 unit of sniper scouts is fine you don't need 3

4 you have no real heavy killing power and would struggle to deal with a predator or a russ and would be completely screwed by a knight.

An example of a different style of the same type of list would be:

HQs-
Lias Issodon: Chapter Master of the Raptors
Captain with Jump Pack: thunder hammer, storm shield
Lieutenant: master-crafted bolter, chainsword (Teeth of Terra for 1CP most times)
Elite-
Company Ancient with the Banner of the Emperor Ascendant
Vanguard Veterans x5 with Jump Packs: power axe x1
Sternguard Veterans x10: special issue bolters x10
Fast Attack-
Scout Bikers x3: storm bolter x1
Scout Bikers x3: storm bolter x1
Scout Bikers x3: storm bolter x1
Troops-
Scouts x5: bolters
Scouts x5: bolters
Scouts x5: bolters
Tactical Marines x5: heavy bolter, storm bolter
Tactical Marines x5: heavy bolter, storm bolter
Tactical Marines x5: heavy bolter, storm bolter
Heavy Support-
Devastator Squad x6: heavy bolters x4, Armorium Cherub
Devastator Squad x7: multi-meltas x4, Armorium Cherub, combi-plasma
Devastator Squad x7: lascannon x3, missile launcher x1, Armorium Cherub, combi-plasma
Transport-
Drop Pod

Man thats a lot of Snipers :)

Thematically the Mortis Dread is a nice choice but competitively if you were going that direction a Helverin Armiger is a better choice for the points.

I like how you’re trying to get synergy out of the Strategems and Whirlwinds are underrated imo ... that said with the current state of the Meta some tweaks to up your anti-tank monster knight ability would be prudent. Be it combi-meltas on the sgts or Devestators the list could use a heavier punch.

Just a thought. Play around with a Double Battalion formation. 4 Scout troop choices and 2 Tactical (or Intercessor) see what you think of it. It’s nice CP generator and puts wounds on the table. Your Tacs being the backfield objective holders the Scouts pushing out giving Lias and his boys to do their thing ;)

Thanks for the input guys. I really appreciate it. I will consider your suggestions for future building of models. I'm just working with what I got at the moment. These models are from 6th edition and making them to 8th edition workability is rough. The only new purchase I made was the Reivers. Ballin on a  budget I suppose. Rather than make a new thread or post on changes, I edited the first post. I thought having 15 Command Points would be a cool idea, I dunno.

Anyways I'm going to try this list out Friday and I'll let you know how it turns out. Wish me luck.

Having not played a game of 8th, but being a big fan of actually testing effectiveness on the table, I'm interested to know how the whirlwinds get on.

One thought I did have is if you have the bits still, you could put in a missile launcher to a couple of those sniper squads to give a little more anti tank.  Might save a bit of money and give some mortal wounds with the Flakk Missile Stratagem.

Works on anything with FLY, not just fliers.

Oh and good luck.

I tried a game yesturday and I was told that I cant use RG anything despite being a Raven Guard successor chapter. Having used the searched function to get answers to my inquires, I had found that I was playing it proper by just using the RG tactics and RG strategems, I even went as far as picking my warlord trait; picked Storm of Fire; for Lias Issodon and omg Sternguard are really insane within him.

My MVPs were the Whirlwind and Land speeder storm became after tucking my Whirlwind behind a huge building during deployment and had my storm in reserve. I used Data link Telemetry and found it very rewarding considering.  I also found it enjoyable to have 15 command points in the game, really helped me with the rerolls doing 2 orbital bombardments; one from the strategem and the other from the damocles. I'm playing a game later today and I'll report in on my experience.

Whirlwinds are fine its just by the logic that you use for the missile launcher a thunderfire cannon is preferable as both are indirect fire and the cannon has access to a stratagem that really messes with your opponent.  The usual detraction for them is not the fact that they are bad its that for roughly the same point cost you can ally in a basalisk, wyvern, or quad mortar etc. and with guard usually providing you a cp farm its not beyond the possibility to take a tank.

I adjusted my list slightly. After some input from various people. Found the list to be fun having played it yesturday against a Nid list. I did loose my bolter scouts first turn but that bought me enough time. I used the Raven Guard Strategem for the LT to be right there with the Sternguard. So far everyone that has come across my list didnt expect much from my Land Speeder Storm and Whirlwinds; till I used my Data Link Telemetry. Lias and the sternguard were my MVPs that game especially with the Warlord trait, Storm of Fire, being active. Overall I'm satisfied with my list and see if I can implement some of yall suggestions when I'm able to make fun purchases.

Earlier this week, I made a post concerning Sentry Guns being used in my list. Tonight I tried out the list that I adjusted in this thread. Solid 2k List imho. I had alot of fun. The Sentry guns were a pretty good for area denial for beta strikes and prevented my opponent to get to my Whirlwinds tucked behind a hill. The 36  inch range was very helpful and the amount of daka offset the 4+ BS of the Sentry. Now coming from 6th edition and playing my Scouts, it didnt bother me so much. Its kind of nice knowing that my guns basically had a permanent 9 in bubble in my deployment zone. Even prevented Line Breaker to be achieved.

I was going against SM/Knight List and I'll tell you right off the bat, I lost and nearly got tabled. Although I did make it a close game in regards to VP, but a close game is still a loss. However I did make my opponent rethink of his perspective on Space Marine Scouts. Lias and his Sternguard did their thing as expected, but ultimately the Knights won over. By turn three half my army was gone wherein I managed to take out a Knight and damaged another. I ended up softening  them up with my two Orbital Strikes First turn, one from Strategem and the other from my Damocles. I feel as though having 15 Command Points for a pure Space Marine Army is nothing of laugh at. Re-Rolls are very nice.

Another thing to note, OMG, Primarchs are beastly, Poor Lias. lol

Scout lists using Raptors/ RG tactics are well under appreciated until you start inflicting damage on your opponents, or so my friends have realized quickly. In my group their top 2 target priorities are the Quad Autocannon Dreadnought and Dakka Predator.

Here is my three Space Marine Scout bikes refitted for 8th edition. From left to right are my Whirlwind Castellan, Vengence, and Hyperios. The Rhino is the back is none other than my Damocles Rhino. Got to do touch ups and finish painting them.

The scout biker doing a stunt ; that's a great idea.

Those Whirlwinds are amazing and none look like the official model.

Thanks man. The Whirlwinds weapons I got from bits that I had laying about. The Castellan weapon system was from Kromlech, the Vengeance was from the Land Raider Hyperios upgrade kit, and the Hyperios Weapon system was from the  Forge-world Air Defense Kit. I managed to snag a pack of Raptors Rhino kit years ago and divided up the doors among three out of four rhinos. I come to find out they are now out of print. sad face.

The Kromlech launcher is the one on the left? Might have to get some of those one day..

Great find on the Raptors doors. It's hard finding the FW parts nowadays.

Yes its the one on the left, still base coated black and looks smaller than the other two. I thought it would be fitting as it has smaller missiles than the other two.

So far not a lot of people were expecting much from the Datalink Telemtry strategem. One guy complained that Lias and the Damocles ability was too OP; even said thats why he doesn't like FW rules. Speaking of FW I'm seeing if there is a good csster out there to recreate the parts since they are out of print so I can give them out to fellow Raptor players who missed out on this cool looking doors.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had  a game earlier tonight and a few things popped up. I was told that I had to deploy Lias and the three units accompanying him in my deployment zone during turn 2. I thought I was fine having them pop up Turn 2+  since I lost the initiative, my opponent rolled a six. I was surprised and my opponent was bitter about Lias and my Damocles Rhino. 2x Orbital Bombardment.

Complained through the whole game  and saying that I was Pay2Win with Forgeworld especially with Datalink Telemetry and Auspex Scan. He dropped his reserves near my Sternguard. then I used Auspex scan, rolled to shoot, and then got the buff aura from the lieutenant , Lias, and Storm  of Fire. I shredded that squad with the Sternguard Strategem. He became salty afterwards.

Try droping a squad of Deathwatch vets with stormbolters and watchmaster in tow, see if he accuse you of pay2win again...

Looks like your opponent did not know much about marines and their stratagems. You should ask him to play again with the same lists now that he knows what's waiting for him.

That being said, it looks like your list is playing like you wanted it, that's nice. You had it right regarding deepstrike reserves - turn 2+ they can drop anywhere on the board more than 9" from any enemy unit. It looks like the only thing you could need is a beatstick ala Captain Smash to tackle Knights in close combat. Might be worth it to look into something like that.

honestly man I wouldnt play that guy again if I had anything to say about it. Apparently him and a few other of his friends are very much the same type of people from the rest of the guys here locally. I had a few other veteran players back me up on rules since I'm still very new to 8th edition. Very helpful. I was recommended throughout to drop the Brigade lists and opt for optimizing my lists under two to three battalions. I'm considering this.
