Land Raider

Iron Sage

356 points (mine is 358 with a combi bolter) is a lot...

Still, I own such a model, and it seems like a waste never to use it. I have yet to use it for my fresh Death Guard. Only played 2 games so far as well, so next to no experience with Death Guard as of yet ,as I live in rural Norway where it is hard to get games (no store to play in for example). My "regular" opponents play Astra Militarum, Dark Eldar (my oh my, they tabled my Iron Warriors the first two times I played against them. Vile army and a good player that controlled them), Dark Angels and some times Necrons and Genestealer cults.

But yeah, I play "friendlies" for lack of possibilities of tournaments nearby (which is something I would love to attend, as I used to do that back when I was a student in Trondheim). Are they semi viable for non tournament play if you fill them up with plague marines, a biologus and a malignant plague caster for instance? Or is it just a harrowing point sink ?

Edit: Reason why I want to know if it is semi viable is that for instance the Dark Eldar and the Astra Militarum are challenging to beat for me, so can't gimp my list too badly with a super non-optimal choice.

As a general rule, just about every model in the game can be played without being such an impediment that you just cannot win.

as an example, I know of a black templar player that takes a landraider to every tournament and will win 2 or 3 game and make a fight of the one he loses.

That being said, the model is close to a knight in point, without being close to the firepower, survivability or versatility.

that mean you pretty much have to abuse the transport ability since you're paying premium for it.

If I wanted to go landraider, I would take 3 Plague burst to go with it and front the enemy with multiple T8 treats. plague marine bomb in the landraider and DP with arc-contaminator.

Maybe some plague drone (they are cheaper for lots of body, but bloat drone are good too) to get a larger footprint.

then fill the back with either Cultist or nurglings. something along this line.

Here’s what I would say.... if you’re playing friendly games, there’s nothing wrong with using it. Just hit it with miasma and go for it.

There are things you can do to make it fit a bit better like adding lots of bloat drones and/ or Plague burst crawlers. Even a Knight or two. Anything that will at the very least cause difficult decisions on behalf of your opponent. Saturating a bit of T8 can help give some units a bit of breathing space. There’s something to be said for fielding non optimal units. I do it all the time. You just have to be careful to not overdo the elite units and be fairly efficient with the rest of your list.

Miasma and smoke launchers have given me some serious mileage out of Landraiders back when I started DG. I admit I haven’t used one in a while but I get my fair share of sub optimal units in trust me.

Thanks for your input guys. I have 2 fetid Bloat drones, 3 plague drones (with 3 more on the way in the mail). A daemon prince (2 if I use Belakor as counts as for a Nurgle DP). I sadly don't own the awesome plague crawlers yet, but will buy 2 I reckon. So yeah, I understand the saturation point and will try to add several high T threats in a battle using my landraider, although it costs heartblood, so in a 2k match I will likely be pressed for points.

Also got 3 Greater Blight Drones, but they got a point hike in the CA, so doesn't seem that good anymore for what they can do tbh, although the can attack the enemy very fast.
