How to ITC as Guard?

Hey people, I have a tournament in a few weeks, one dau, three games. We'll be playing:

Scenario 1 - Seize Ground

Scenario 6 - Precious Cargo

Scenario 3 - Nexus Control

I've never played ITC before and it's only my second tournament ever. So I'm kind of clueless. :D

I already posted my list but I'd appreciate some general advice on how to handle ITC missions and objectives.

Current ITC champs missions are boring imho

My 2c

Read the primary bonuses carefully there's a couple where obsec doesnt apply and the range is more than 3" to hold

Although dont bank on scoring many bonus points this way

Secondaries always take old school otherwise you'll kick yourself when you realise that these don't exist as standard bonus points

Headhunter is generally a safe bet too

Reaper and 1000 cuts were recently polled as the least enjoyed options too and I agree

Recon is easy if you have fliers and deep strikers

Otherwise big game hunter might be handy

End of the day make sure you hold >1 and kill >1 per turn to get the standard points

Are the actual missions all that relevant? Looking over it I felt like the secondaries and the points you get from killing and holding will always net you much more. Especially because some of the main objectives seems to not really be achievable until the game is pretty much decided.

The secondaries are probably the most important part of an ITC mission. The primaries are just holding and killing, which I hope every army was planning on doing anyway, but you can plan an army around denying easy secondary points to your enemy. That being said, I've seen a few games decided by 1-2 points of one player earning the mission bonus points, so it pays to keep them in mind. Plus, they'll add to your tournament score if you can earn them.

Recon/headhunter/big game hunter are usually great objectives for guard armies to take - provided your enemy has enough targets for the latter 2. If your enemy has a knight, consider kingslayer on it instead.

If you have a castellan, slay the warlord is almost guaranteed with the derp missile, so old

School +headhunter is a nice combo.

Not too sure what you mean by your question

However the primary round mission does require you to push a bit more to get

Unless you've specifically tooled your army to achieve them you're better of just going for the basic get an objective, kill something, try and achieve the +1 for each is possible

The bonus objectives you're better of just denying your opponent and playing defensively in that resepect

As for the 3 missions you pick they are important as they as generally the deciding factors

Again usually list design will impact which you one you choose, although I would say picking old school is a given, so you just select 2 others. One of which maybe decided by your opponents list

I am not a fan of this mission set as I find I always end up picking the same mission every round and my opponent playing the same missions against me

Which makes for a really exciting 6 round tournament... yay...  :ermm:

As others have mentioned you are almost obliged to game the system by taking a HWT in your infantry squad to deny reaper

Thing to remember with ITC:

People have mentioned HWT in your squads, that’s important. Deny enemy points. Also... “combining squads” is HUGE if you get down to 1-2 models. Roll them into another squad and deny that point.

Hold something/more. This isn’t hard with so many bodies. Try to get as close to it and in cover it out of LOS.

Kill something: try to plan on killing things to achieve secondary points. Guard do well with killing, so pick things you can score double points for.

Selecting the right secondaries is THE most important part of ITC when you’re just getting into it. Have you posted your list for review in the list area? Knowing what your army is good at and what you should try to deny your opponent will win you games.

With ITC it can be a bit confusing at 1st as the mission objectives are usually the least important / difficult / low value.

Secondarys seem important, but i try to think of them as you both start with 12, and you and your opponent lose points if you fail to get any. It can be particularly misleading in game as some secondarys can be scored earlier whilst others are limited to 1 a turn, or generally picked up late game (e.g. headhunter can be difficult and then late game you pick up all 4 points)

The primarys are the real key IMO you pretty much need to at least kill 1 a turn and capture 1 a turn and then either kill more or capture more (ideally both). Plan around the primarys and stopping your opponent getting them easily.

Doesn’t that 10 man but 9 model squad objective thing seem a little gamey? I mean it’s always been an argument that the HW base is actually 2 guys/models/etc, but for this it’s played the other way?

What if I take my Steel Legion squad where the missile launcher and his loader are on separate bases?

That was the argument

Although with IG most people took HWTs because it made sense anyways

Its all moot now though because they've revised the missions and replaced it with one thats just total models killed not by squad
