Eidolon's random projects..... there are no Wolves on Fenris

Recommended Posts

I am a terrible hobby butterfly - I find I get these great ideas but rarely follow them through. I also get bored pretty easily and tire halfway through projects as many half done Emperor's Children marines can testify to.....

I also think it is good and healthy to paint something different, I found doing some Death Guard really made me want to do a few more Emperor's Children and now vice versa!

So the purpose of this thread is to help keep me motivated with these next few ideas that won't really fit into my existing threads or warrant individual ones. My initial projects will be

  • Iron Warriors Veterans and Rhino -- I shall eventually attempt a squad of every Heresy legion and Rhino, just for fun. A sort of March of the Legions on speed! The key here is to try to make the squad really fit the aesthetic of legion.
  • Chaos Kill team - most likely Night Lords
  • Praetorian Imperial Guard - got a few old skool minis and have converted up a few Cadians with third party heads.
  • Thousand Sons - using 40k models for Heresy era legion, akin to what I did with my Death Guard. I'm considering building this as a small army to take part in Trokair's building a new army challenge!

Anyways, here is what I've got so far with the Iron Warriors. I've long held a fondness for the IVth legion, starting off with Storm of Iron and always wanted to try them out. They have quite strong colour scheme, but it is very easy to do Iron Warriors badly - thankfully attending an MKA course and discovering burnt umber oil washes make it easy to make them look good! I've been keen to try out the scheme since I attended the course!

I picked up a set of the classic 40k IW upgrade kit on a trip to Warhammer World on my last trip home to the UK and really wanted do something with them, particularly given I wasn't overly impressed with the FW torsos and heads. I managed to acquire some MK2 legs off a friend that weren't terribly good casts, but with patience and a dremel I've managed to remove mould lines and slippage.

I've mixed and matched bits with the classic CSM range, a few random chaos bits and other stuff i've laying around in my bits box! Here's is my initial assembly - i've left the pads off so I can just spray them black..... This is a airbrushing with a black silver, a dark silver and light silver -- I used Alclad black chrome, burnt iron and dull aluminium - with a very fine highlight from top down of silver.

Here it is with a black/brown oil pin wash

Here it is after a blocking in the bronze and another slightly thicker wash in the recesses

gallery_162_17168_906530.jpeg
Here is the results of a thicker oil wash to effectively stain -- i then steak and tidy it up with white spirit.

They will still look a little glossy on account of the gloss coat to help the oils flow into the recesses and protect the lacquer paint from the white spirit. This eventually be removed with a final matt coat at the end of the process.

As for load out these will be 30k Vets, so I'm planning on a plasma gunner and heavy bolter dude with a plasma pistol Sgt. I'll then dig out my half finished Rhino and see about tying it all in together. Maybe this will be small army one day, or allied contingent for my EC, who knows..... Hope you guys like....

Hobby butterflying is something I do as well. My chapter is based on the fact I won't concentrate for long so it has plenty of varied units!!

Looking good so far, I think we'll see it all come together when you matt coat it.

I've kind of got painting pink fatigue! Haha. I know it's sacrilege but I really want to re-start my Dogs of War Fantasy army but I'm still narked over the nuking of the old world --- I just like the idea of painting an odd unit of random races without committing too much!

Anyway, here is a little update

Just need to figure out what symbol to use for vets on the right pad

I'm pretty much finish the Iron Warrior squad, 5 done the last 5 just need a small amount of detailing. The delays been on account of basing: just waiting for a few hobby supplies.....

Anyway, my second 'test' marine for my fledgling Thousand Son force is done! I'm happier with this one! I initially had a dullcote finish, but I feel the armour needs to be glossy to reflect the 'magical' nature of Egyptian Space wizards!! Sadly the glossy armour doesn't photograph as well....

gallery_162_17168_68620.jpeg

I've started work on 4more vets and might even have a work around with basic tactical so watch this space!!

I've also built my praetor/exhalted sorcerer so I'll get some previews up soon'

I've been chatting with Grieux to work on a little 'rivalry' with his Space Wolves. I really need to up my game to compete against his varagyr but I do like a challenge..... Will need to really make some special Sekhmet!!

Love these new updates mate, the Prosperine legionnaire has a really nice colour and the FW upgrade works well with the plastic kit for a more elite look.

The metallics of the Iron Warrior are really well done too.

Thanks mate, I really wanted to do a small Sons force when Inferno hit but I never liked the red. Then I hated the tiny MK4 plastics so it stalled.

It'll be a small force because painting the trim on the rubrics really is a royal pain - especially over the glossy red!!

I've finally got some basing supplies for the Iron Warriors, so I'll have that Veteran Squad all done soon enough....

Here's progress on another Son....

And here is another WIP effort, a slight repose as the rubric kit is very static!

gallery_162_17168_1063336.jpeg

I'm finding making the arms do something interesting a real problem - not easy to cut and repose! Thankfully I'm only doing 10!!

I think I can make my Mk3s look sufficiently Egyptian to give me a simple bulk troop choice

Well as I'm answering the 'call of chaos' I'll dump a few photos here of the various works in progress!

I'll certainly use the opportunity to finish the Iron Warriors squad off and build on the Thousand Sons! The Death Guard can continue in their own thread!

Painting the Rubrics is an absolute nightmare due to the amount of trim - I think they'll have to remain elite choices!! So I'm pondering ways to make up basic marine choices for 30k. Whilst I don't think Mk3 marines are entirely fitting with the Thousand Son look, I've got a cheeky idea or two I might try out! Luckily I've only pledged 5 for the Call! I can easily add these as either Vets to join my test model and his half done buddy above or if my Mk3 test goes well they can be a support squad!!

With the Call of Chaos approaching it's time to 'dust' off Thousand Sons! I'd been busy trying to tidy up my Emperors Children - I've just got a few more bits and details to do to get me up to 50 completed infantry! A big achievement - I think I'll deserve a break from pink for a whilst....

Anyway, here is my Sons Praetor/ Exhalted Sorcerer -- extra bonus points if you can guess who he is......

Izzakar Orr... I shall chase him through eternity and imprison my comrades for 10,000 years to see him brought down.

To be fair, it could be pretty much any TS character! Alas it's not ORR, but I did listen to the short story! I'll use bits of my exalted sorcerer box to make him; it'll be a true grudge match then!!

Have you got the book handy?! If so please let me have the details of his description. I'm currently making Sanakht the blade master to slice n dice your Wolves!!

I'll find it for you but off the top of my head he had a huge gaping hole in his chest from being mauled to death by the Vlka. But now that I think about it that pretty much describes 99% of your legion doesn't it? ;P

Cheeky!! Savage imbeciles wrecking that which they can't understand.... pity the dogs of Russ were duped by the Warmaster....

Thought I'd knock up another Character for the Sons, this one should be a little easier....

Going make myself a small unit of Khenetai Blades as I think they look pretty cool!

Yep definitely easier to identify when they're lying in the ground without limbs. Is it Sanakht?

It is - I realised I mentioned it earlier on! Haha.

I've done a little work on my Thousand Sons during the server outage - I've pretty much got 5 done, just a few finishing touches to go...

Well I was never really happy with the clear red effect I was getting with the gold base and my red lacquer. Interestingly it was a case of experimentation with blue for my night lords when I had a play with tamiya clear red to make a purple shade. In any event I've finally found a good shade of red and method of preshading I like! So as the silver base is the same for both Night Lords and Thousand Sons I'll batch paint a small force of both!

As I'm waiting for the ETL to start before painting anything so I thought I'd use the time to finish off a few conversions - here is a death mask wearing Sanakht.....

The question is do I keep the beard?! It's playing havoc with the torso!!

The image of Phosis T'Kar's helmet you made is hella fuzzy, but looks good from what I can see.

Regarding the beard on Sanakht's head, why not tilt the beard at an angle so it doesn't interfere with the torso? Iirc, the beards on Egyptian Death Masks were angled ever so slightly forward so they stuck out at an angle.

That deathmask looks good, I really like the beard; nice use of Tomb Kings! T'Kar's helm is shaping up well too, though that photo is awfully blurry.

Thanks matey! I'm glad I've managed to acquire some bits. It's a real shame the TK range got binned before the release of Thousand Sons! I'd have brought loads of them!!

Unfortunately I couldn't get a decent in focus pic of the head at all, the camera mustn't like artificial light! I'll try again In daylight once I've started the greenstuff. I was really just looking to see if the crest worked and the pic at least showed that!

Thanks! I originally had a thread discussing Sanakht in the Thousand Son forum, the beard is generally liked there and I've trimmed it slightly at the back and bent it a little so it missed the collar! Great point re the death masks - I think I may need to trim the beard as it's pretty long but I'll post up pics of the head on the body so we can see how it looks.

Would it work if you shortened the beard?

I'm considering shortening the beard! I guess we need to consider the beard length with the head attached to a body.....

Alas I've not been able to find a wolfy handle, but I'll keep an eye out! Shouldn't be too hard to add different pommels at a later date...

Anyway, here's a primed Sanakht - I needed to see how smooth the putty work was; I'll probably smooth it a little more on closer inspection but I think a preview is justified..

Oh man, Phosis T'kar looks AWESOME. Was the blurriness of the photo showing his helmet intentional as to hide how his helmet fully looked before you were done with it or something? :laugh.:

As to Sanakht, I quite like him.

I couldn't get the damn camera to focus, no matter how hard I tried! I also needed to go out and wanted a pic up for critique so I could work on something when I'd got back. Personally I'd like the 'headdress' to better reflect the art, but I couldn't find angry suitable! It's a magnetic head anyway, so I can swap it out if I make a better one.

The staff was just a temporary measure, I'd cut the end off something and knew I'd lose it, so I stuck it on the paper clip. I think the rods too long, I'm currently after something like the art below...

With better wire I should be able to get a better approximation

Well, as I can't paint anything until the onset of the ETL here is the start of another historic Thousand Son... who could it be.....

gallery_162_17168_44717.jpeg

A bit rough around the edges, needed to prime it so I could better see what needs tidying, the crest needs little more filing and possibly a jewel on the forks
