Unit of the Week: Primaris Apothecary

Welcome to the Blood Angels Unit of the Week Series!

Following the release of the 8th edition Codex, there is no better time to discuss all the unique units we have access to. Each week a different unit will appear, with the idea being that we discuss how best to use that model on the battlefield.

Note, this isn't to lament any nerfs, etc, from previous editions; the rules are as they are so try to unlock its potential for those who wish to use them all the same. Similarly, this thread is only for using the option being discussed; it matters not if you feel something is a better choice as such comments aren't constructive to the topic and shall be removed.

Without further ado, here's this week's entry:

What are you thoughts here folks? How best would you use a Primaris Ancient?
  • To compliment a list, or to build a list around? Will the beta rules affect your list(s)?
  • Will you be running multiples?
  • Footslog or transport? Suitable for Warlord duties?
  • Who will you be babysitting with this unit and do their unique pistols compliment anything in our forces?
  • How are you buffing this unit?
  • Stratagems?

Over to you

Echoing my thoughts on the Primaris Ancient, you really only want to take this dude if you are going for 100% Primaris. Or you like the model.

Otherwise, objectively speaking, a Sanguinary Priest gives you so much more with more options. End of story.

If there was a Primaris Sanguinary Priest of sorts, than that would be a different story. But they just included this b/c all power armored forces got all Primaris, and that's it.

I'd love to find some sort of edge case where this fellow shines, but I got nothing.

It is an Elite instead of an HQ. So I could see a situation where you can't take another HQ or need another Elite and would choose the Primaris Apothecary over Sanquinary Priest. But outside of the odd scenario like that, I would probably agree with Indefragable.

Seconded. It's really only an interesting choice in a pure Primaris list.

The one notable thing here would probably be his Absolver bolt pistol (S5 AP-1) and that his Narthecium is also a Reductor pistol (S4 AP-3 D2 but only 3" range) so if he happens to be in melee during your shooting phase he could be quite a threat there. As we know that shouldn't happen too often tho unfortunately unless it's something that doesn't really care like Cultists and such.

As for any Apothecary and Sanguinary Priest it's best to revive tough models with multiple wounds. So basically Inceptors (which he can't keep up with) or Aggressors in a pure Primaris list.

Having him near some Hellblaster with an Ancient should prove quite annoying for your opponent as well and would require him kill them in one go if he really wants to get rid of that unit ... something not too terribly difficult to do tho even with a relic Ancient nearby.
