609th Octavian Regiment- Charlie Company. Slow grow project.

Recommended Posts

The start of Charlie company, 609th regiment, Octavian Administration sector.

Current goal is 500 points including 2 company commanders, a leman russ, a hellhound, an Astropath and 30 infantry.

Incidentally what the Guard can fit in 500 points is pretty funny.

Thank the lord for ETL- without it I wouldn't even be close to hitting the deadline (as it is just the Hellhound to go, wanted to get it sprayed today but it just refused to stop raining :unsure.:

Love the tank paint scheme! This is a really cool project. I especially like the sergeant on the right. Is that a heavy bolter or just a regular one? Also, mind telling me where it comes from? It wouldn't happen to be from a space wolf kit would it? It looks like a conversion I've been thinking about for a while; empire head swap and all!

Lovely force so far! So crisp! Big fan of the tank and the rough riders. Keep us posted on your progress.

Looks like the sergeant has acquired a chaos space marine bolter! I might be wrong though.

Thanks! Appreciate it.

It's a bolter taken from the normal chaos space marines box. Without the magazine it appears slightly more guard sized (slightly!)

The sergeant on the right of this pick was the test one and will eventually be replaced with one like the other two

Well done.

TY! First 40k army since 4th and first time going fully painted ever so I'm on catchup.

These fellas look great, the helmets on the heavy bolter operators arefantastic. I really like the vibrant purple that's dashed around, really draws the eye.

Thanks dude. Anvil Industry's finest for the helmets - they do all the work so we don't have to.

The purple appeared because the test squad looked a bit too practical for the Imperial so had to ham it up a little. Not unhappy with it.

Great kit bashing, very nice paint scheme too to show them off. I like the basing scheme too, nice attention to detail - looking forward to seeing the army comes along

Thanks! A much better painted than me pointed out that if your models are based well you can get away with quite a lot of mistakes :happy.:

Will do- after painting the first one I've found I really hate painting the outrider horse- just can't make them look right so they will be on the back burner for now. Also the slow grow league I'm taking part in restricts you to one book and they are index rather than codex.

Well spotted on the Bolter although I hope for their sake it's just an old design rather than tainted.

I really like the colour scheme you have gone for... both on the troops and the tanks.

I also like the different helmets for the sgts but would prefer them all to be uniform (so it's good to see you plan on changing the one on the right :)  ).

The tank camo is spot on and I like the way you have built the Leman Russ (the Chimera tracks look very cool on them).

Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing much more :smile.: .

I really like the prone heavy weapon teams. It's not something you see very often. I also really like the camo design for your Hellhound. Do you mind explaining how you achieved the effect with the hard angles? I am looking to do something similar for my own vehicles.

Thanks! I got the inspiration from a guy on dakkadakka who did a guide ages back about how to get the absolute most heavy weapon teams from the sprue. Need to dig that out again at some point as it was a good guide.

The camo is just done with thin masking tape and two sprays - here's the WIP Basilisk I'm putting together for the jump to 750. The only tip I can give you that you wont have heard a thousand times before is really take your time with the masking tape and use a toothpick to get it into all the curves (which I was part way through doing when I took this picture). combine this with a light two coat spray for the top layer and you get a very clean edge to the camo stripes with little work or cleanup (which is good because I'm lazy)

Also if you ever think of buying it that Solar Auxilia Basilisk kit is both beautiful and one of the worst quality casts I've got from forgeworld (and takes little conversion work to get the 40k loadout).

Now I just need to motivate myself to paint 30 more infantry :/

I'm trying to decide if I should switch to conventional Russes in future or if I should convert more Chimeradons.

Thoughts folks?

Leaving the one I've made in as a Vanquisher (should that ever hit the table again) would be fine as the lower profile looks a little more tank destroyer as I'm not sure it really looks better than a standard Russ.

Second Platoon of Charlie Company faced off against advance elements of the Flesh Tearers, reports are mixed as to who fired first but the Octavian command structure has faith that Commander Talbot acted without fault and his posthumous commendation has been approved.

Flesh Tearers forces

Hammer/Jump pack/Inferno pistol Captain

2 x 5 Sniper camo scouts

10 Rievers (combat squaded before deployment)

Battleround 1 involved him sniping my Laurels Company commander off the table with one squad then the Astropath (positioned behind the Hellhound so out of LoS) stripping the cover saves from one of the scout squads and the Hellhound burning them to death to a man. The Leman russ fired at scouts and missed. Astropath failed Maelstrom. Infantry fire was ineffectual.

Battleround 2 his Rievers and captain dropped in and wiped most of my first line of bubble wrap. The Hellhound BBQs the other scout squad and the Astropath failed Maelstrom again. Infantry retreated and using orders fired picked a wound off each Riever squad. Leman Russ fired, hit the captain with about a 3rd of it's shots before failing to wound with all bar a single battlecannon (this was a lot of ones) hit which was saved. dropped to 5 command points and basically stayed there until turn 5 (Grand Strategist success after success).

Battleround 3 The captain charged the Leman Russ and did 3 wounds to it, it struck back doing a single wound (this will become very important later). This single wound in melee was the only damage the tank inflicted all game. First squad entirely wiped out, second squad down to a couple of guys, last squad untouched. Tank retreats from combat as do the remnants of my infantry. Hellhound trundles onto an objective that it will remain on for the rest of the game. Astropath Maelstroms the captain putting 4 mortal wounds on him and killing him (!). Infantry and hellhound fire get one Riever squad to a single man.

Battleround 4 The 5 man Riever squad charges my remaining CC and butchers him in short order (they late consolidate into the Astropath), the remaining Riever of the other squad takes a wound on overwatch charging my depleted squad taking it down to two guys. The infantry retreat and with the help of the hellhound gun down the remaining Riever in the mangled squad. The Astropath retreats but is now stuck in a corner. He fails to cast Maelstrom.

Battleround 5 The Remaining Reiver squad multicharges my remaining healthy squad and the Astropath cutting both down like wheat. My remaining two infantry sprint for the Superior objective getting onto it and into the enemy's deployment zone to score Linebreaker (the Hellhound repositions slightly to block LoS to them while remaining on the objective). The Leman Russ misses all it's shots. The battle ends with no turn 6.

Lessons learned - Astropaths are as underrated as I thought they were.

Guard infantry even with orders shouldn't be relied upon to do more than screen.

BS 4+ can lead to wild variance in shooting success and a bit of bad luck can ruin your day.

Grand Strategist can sometimes carry the day - I used maybe 15 command points that game.

  • 3 weeks later...

OK folks we are currently 4 for 4 in the slow grow league and if I can win one more game tonight I get bonus points towards the leaderboard for a month with at least 5 wins and no losses.

Tonight's game is against Khorne Daemons with a bloodmaster, three units of bloodletters and a prince with crazy axe.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Khorne Daemons so what should I look out for? What should I expect? My list is the same as before (we can't change mid month).

This is going to be literally my 5th game in 8th edition so my wins so far may well be a fluke.

Four wins is a great record, never mind for your first games in 8th. Keeping that going will be hard but not impossible. I'm not that familiar with Khorne daemons, but they will be aiming to get into combat quickly as that's pretty much their entire focus. I would expect the Bloodletters to go ahead of the Prince to protect him (he'll be after your high value units, like tanks), the Bloodmaster probably working with them from behind (I think he'll buff them?).

At low points especially there's not much you can do. Keep your army together (as he will be), so you don't get drawn our or isolated. Once you know how he's coming at you adapt accordingly to intercept and mitigate - be sure not to have units too close so he can consolidate after combat. Taking out the Prince will be hard, you'll probably have to accept him hitting your lines on mostly his own terms. Focus fire the Bloodletters to begin with to try and wipe a unit or at least reduce it before it hits.

The Prince is probably how he'll win, so keep him in mind as you play and you shouldn't go far wrong. Good luck, and let us know how it goes :tu:

Thanks- I was thinking layer picket lines and Vengence for Cadia popped on either Russ or Hellhound each turn. Think vengence for Cadia Hellhound should have a vicious overwatch if needed.

Good thinking on the consolidate distance, I'm still learning so I've lost a few guys to that already.

Ultimately I think a well timed Relic of Lost Cadia should give me the edge.

Update: Won the 5th game but it was against the unluckiest GSC player in the world so I can't feel too good about it. Abominant failed to kill two guardsmen in combat and took a wound in return from a bayonet. Large unit of Purestrains got entirely erased from the table by a single stationary Cadian infantry squad with take Aim, 1st rank fire 2nd rank fire, and Bring it Down (I'm rapidly learning to love laurels of command) at rapid fire range after deleting my picket squad.

The Chaos Daemons player who had agreed to the game ran and hid behind Magic the Gathering for two weeks straight- his cowardice will be remembered.

Here's the force completed at 500

And here's the expansion to 750.

Now featuring 100% added Pask.
