'Safe' Ork Purchases?

I'm very interested in Orks and would like to start an army. I'm still learning to paint and do so slowly, so I wanted to start collecting some Ork models and painting them before the Codex. What do you think are pretty safe things to get that won't drastically change in rules or get new models? I was thinking just Slugga Boyz since they seem to be the backbone of most forces, although I keep seeing people suggesting their base size might change so I'm not sure what to do. I'm so new to this edition having not played in ages it's hard to tell what's believable.

Ork models have almost as many spikes as chaos beakies, none of them are safe!

Anyways. Boyz are always a good bet, and I like having a variety of nobz. Everyone needs a good warboss conversion. Lootas have typically been useful throughout the editions, especially since we know of the dakka dakka dakka rule. Also, anything you think looks cool or have a good conversion idea for is a safe bet, because something that looks awesome will always look awesome regardless of the current rules or meta. Loot all the things!

If it were me I'd get Grots and Nobs. rots are troops and I doubt that will ever change. Nobs pack a punch and are fewer models than boys. Right now you can have a unit as few as 3 nobs in a mob. I'm thinking about these because you mention not paint very quickly. 

You'll be told other units are "better" but I think these are safe bets to get you started.

you could always grab some magnets!

 

being able to just remove an arm and paint an area is fantastic for painters, new or veteran.

 

you could do killa kans, magnetize the arms/weapons. if you wish to change it, just add a magnet to the new loadout and paint it up.

 

 

so, for magnetizing Killa kans, mega nobs, and deffdread. these  models are fun to paint to.

Won't need one until there's enough models to have a game with anyway, plus it's simple enough to buy the box + a HQ ;)

The Kult of Speed Battleforce is also a reasonable value unless you happen to hate any of the units in it. How "safe" anything is is a toss-up, although a pile of boyz usually doesn't go too far wrong.

Go with whatever minis you think are nicest and you would enjoy having in your collection to be honest. The chances of a unit etc being made redundant are quite slim and you can always chop and change them if the sky falls.

 

A backbone of Boyz of any variety will be always handy, as will Nobz, KillaKanz and Dreads etc. As others have mentioned the getting started boxed set has lots of things that are handy to have. You could use it easily as a starter force, just use the Nob etc as a Warboss.

 

So in conclusion, choose what you like and then go from there I would recommend. Figure out a clan you think would be fun to try out and enjoy Da Boyz! :D

Putting the figure on a base is usually just about the last thing I do. Besides, so far the "official" ruling has been that it's fine to use whatever base came with the figure even if later kits change to a different base size. My regular marines are still 95% 25mm bases. I can't see them changing ork boyz to a 32mm base though, or if they do they're being silly. 30-model squads on 32mm bases would be folly.

 

Also, if you use just a few dabs of superglue to attach the model to the base it's easy enough to tear it off if need be.

Superglue is the best bet, its not what I have done with mine... thats a future Uverons Problem. 

 

But I will also say, that some of my models came on the old Gorkamork bases and I dont think they would fly in the current game... even though the metal grots look great on them!

Personally I like Slugga boys, they're a solid backbone for any Ork army. Typically I field units of 19 + painboy or 20 in a battlewagon. A couple of those form a solid core (any key unit I always try and take 2 or more of)

 

Shoota Boyz work better in mobs of 12 in a Trukk, typically with a Big Shoota, and again a couple of mobs never goes amiss.

 

All told 6 boxes of Boyz, 2 Trukks, and 2 Battlewagons will form the core of most Ork lists. If you want to shake things up, or play smaller games, you can chop and change, for example field 20 Shoota Boyz on foot, or a large 30 man mob of Slugga Boyz.

For most purposes, I feel like waiting for the codex is always the right choice.  With Orks, I'd echo most of what has been said about Boyz being a safe bet (especially standard Choppa/Slugga), with a Warboss being another solid option as long as you don't mind re-gluing (or magnetizing) the weapon arms if a shiny optimal build shows up in the new 'dex.

 

One HUGE recommendation I can make: now that GW has ruled hard on Regiments/Chapters/etc. being paintjob-locked for events (meaning Ultramarines have to use their Chapter Tactics, etc.), I highly recommend either not painting until you see the Ork Clans rules (finalized, not salty Internet rumours) or in the minimum making up your own Ork Clan so you can switch to whichever rules best fit the type of army you wanted to build.

Although "paintjob-locked" is onlymeaningful if you play in events that are like that. My local area's gaming group couldn't care less for example. Some national-level events might, but not sure. Orks-wise mine are sort of Goff-like for the vehicles being black, but actually custom.

See, that's why I'm glad most of my vehicles will be ORANGE :lol: They can't say "those are Evil Sunz because they're red". Because my army is mostly a Speed Freeks force with Bad Moons and Evil Sunz (Rd+Yellow=Orange) with Deathskulls making up the more stationary stuff (Mek Gunz and Lootaz, stuff like that)

 

The good thing about Orks is that if you buy a kit and the rules suck/get nerfed, you can always just convert it into something else, proper Orky style. :teehee:
