Maulerfiend or Forgefiend

So I slipped and bought one of these yesterday. I'm not going to magnetise as I want the spares to convert knights and AdTitanicus titans with, so my question is which is more useful to a Thousand Sons army?

I know Hades Autocannon fiend > ectoplasma fiend, right? But is the combat ability of the Maulerfiend and anti horde with the lasher tendrils too good at shoring up weaknesses in the army to ignore?

I also have 2 armiger warglaives/whichever has the meltas. Would a fiend flanked by two of those be fun?

Any input is welcome!

I think a fiend with Armiger support would do well, but from my own experience the Maulerfiend is solid (a C:CSM force). With the lasher tendrils it's at a reasonable price and can muster a lot of pretty good attacks, it can handle infantry and tanks nicely.

I'm not sure about the Forgefiend personally, as it's shooty but can't move without suffering a lot from the -1 to hit. The Maulerfiend is more reliable, plus it's quite quick too so can bound up into combat without too much trouble so that's my favourite. Given they're a Slaanesh force who have plenty of combat, that I prefer the combat version is probably the best endorsement I can give :tongue.:

For an army that mostly focuses on shooting like Thousand Sons I think the Maulerfiend is the stand out choice. It'll give you some punch as well as anti-horde, especially against gribbly units that would love to get into combat with your shooty units. Most important is it's a great model and will look really nice in Thousand Sons colours, and with a Sons army

Since your question is about which is stronger and it's about building the model and not just which one to include in a list I'd say better wait for the CA and see whether GW shakes things up again or not.

Nothing worse than having build an expensive model with the stronger loadout in mind just to have it become the weaker loadout before having been able to use it properly.

Both good points - is CA out this month? I can't imagine fields have been doing well/poorly, you dont really hear about them being outstanding, so I can't see them changing - That said, I can probably wait a little while, or glue together sub-assemblies that are shared between the two.

I'd also be leaning towards the mauler to provide some reasonably fast combat ability to tie threats to the rubrics up, and there's some fluff on the silver sons adding all kinds of sigils to their maulerfiends to eat necrons.

I really wish the TS chapter tactics had some provision which vehicles benefitted from, like +1 save.

Urg, I can't wait til December, I want to make it now, haha. I'm too much of a hobby butterfly and the Thousand Sons are currently on my radar. I'm probably going to go maulerfiend - I get the impression dakkafiends are outclassed by Knight Helverins, anyway? The next purchase will be some of those, or a chaos pred.

It'd be great to see Marine traits extended to vehicles but it feels like expecting anything much is walking far on the road to disappointment... A chunk of the model is the same regardless so if you're willing to wait you could do that to hedge your bets, but I agree that they're probably not going to change. We've only had one CA so far and the machinations of GW are not for the mortal mind, so we can't be sure how much will change this time.

You should take advantage of your desire to build and paint a fiend now, not wait to see if your interest may wane. That’s me though!

I'm kind of the same. I have to be interested in a project to work on it. I have sooo much stuff in boxed that I've bought and not made before my interest moved on...

So I played around with the maulerfiend *a lot* on Friday night and I absolutely love this kit. I can see myself getting more in time, the chance to put all those arms in different sockets to make some really weird beasts is too tempting. After a lot of dithering, I went with the base pose for my first fiend, as i didn't want to start cutting it up with no clear goal in mind. Others will be more twisted.

It's a really good kit :biggrin.: The stock pose is nice so nothing wrong with it - just means you need to get creative with the second (and third..?) :smile.: Don't forget to post pictures

As of now it's undercoated, but I'll get some pictures up in my Chaos log in the WIP section.

I think you did a great job. I personally would have been closer to the 'traditional' aqua blue/green but I like your colour choice, and really it's your Thousand Sons, they can be whatever the heck you want. Again I think you did a great job. I think both the Mauler and Forge are great models. Both can work in different list designs.

I really, really think stuff like Maulers have to improve a bit in December and you're already done one. Now to do 2-3 more! :tu:

I think they just need to upgrade the weapons on the forgefiend to allow butcher cannons. I love the kit. I used a lot of one in my recent Deredeo dreadnought conversion, and I have all the leftover pieces to assemble a Maulerfiend. Such a great model.

Thanks both! This guy is in the scheme of the 'Silver Sons' sect of the Cult of time. They have a dark sapphire armour with metal trim - which I thought would go well with my Iron Warriors, along with the black/yellow crest colouration.

I think I'm going to go a shade lighter (macragge clue) with the rest. the Kantor has a bit too much...purple(?) in it if that makes sense. It's a very midnight blue, while I prefer the old regal blue tone on my Sons.
