New units - Primaris Marines and the Space Wolves

The future of Primaris Marines for Space Wolves.

Assuming the current state of Primaris stuff in the codex is unlikely to change, what would you like to added see in the future?

I think the obvious gaps to fill in the short term is a Primaris Wolf Guard / Veteran unit, and a character of some sort.

What do you think these could look like? What else would be a good fit? What would a SWified Redemptor Dreadnought be like?

Some ideas...

Heathguard

* These are Primaris Marines that have joined the Wolf Guard

* Unit size 3-6

* Elite

* Gravis-armoured Primaris Marines

* Stats: as per Aggressors with +1A and +1 LD, and the keyword ‘Wolf Guard’

* A single Heathguard model can be purchased to accompany intercessor, aggressor, and hellblaster squads

* Heathguard are armed with an assault bolter and tempest hammer. The entire squad can exchange their assault bolters for plasma exterminators.

Primaris Wulfen

* Primaris Marines are less likely to go Wulfen, but when they do...

* Monster

* Fast Attack

* Unit size: 1

* M10, WS3+, BS6+, S6, T6, A7, W7, LD6, Save 6+

* Feel no pain 5+, Berserk Charge, Headstrong, Terror Troop, Death Frenzy, Curse of the Wulfen

* Claws: S user -1 AP

* Cyberwolf Upgrade: Feel no pain 4+, weapon = 2x Lightning Claws

Inceptors

* Blood Claw changes: BS4+, Berserk Charge, Headstrong, Blood Claw keyword

Svol Krakenson, the Fate Stealer, Rune Priest of the Bloodmaws

* Primaris Rune Priest

* Rune Armour

* Psychic hood

* No ranged weapons (including grenades)

* Headstrong

* Knows Smite and 1 other Tempestas power, can cast only 1 power a turn but can deny 2

* Svol is armed with Thought & Memory, paired Rune Axes, they have the same rules as regular Rune axes, and in addition:

* Allows for one extra attack

* If Svol kills one or more enemy models with Thought and Memory in any fight phase Svol’s owning player can choose for their opponent to lose 1 CP or for the owning player to gain 1 CP. If Svol slays the enemy warlord with Thought and Memory the player can choose both. [The axes can be used to steal battle plans, codewords, etc]

Bjorg Ravensfriend, Rune Priest of the Bloodmaws

* Primaris Rune Priest

* Standard stats etc except

* Has runic armour

* Has a bolt rifle with auxiliary grenade launcher

* Once per game if Bjorg is selected as the Rune Priest for the stratagem Chooser of the Slain it can be used for free (ie don’t pay 2 CP for it) [he has many raven familiars]

** in the unlikely event GW wants to use any of these ideas, they can **

Where is Bran?

No Bran, no joy :sad.:

Here he is :wink:

Splog,

Interesting ideas. I like the concepts you've come up with but I'm not sure we'll see them. That first Rune Priest seems like a creative answer to the regenerating CP's absence though.

I feel like Primaris are a modernized version of 30k troops with a twist.

I am not 30k expert but

Tactical squad=intercessors that have different Bolter options

Reivers squad=Recon squad, can choose Bolter or combat blade and have those grenade.

However Gravis I have no idea it isn't Terminator armor or even close and it isn't 40k centurion armor

For SWs I would like Primaris Grey Slayers as a unit.

Intercessors that can take their normal bolters/SS and bolt pistol or SS/Power and bolt pistol weapons. However it needs a unique twist. Something that prevents enemy fall back. Not sure what to call it or the lore though. Maybe anti-grav but reversed, causes a gravity well that help prevent enemy unit retreat, or if using a bolt gun prevents a charge into them.

I'm not sure if we will see dedicated chapter specific Primaris units for quite some time, especially as the general Primaris range still has holes in it in a wider sense such as a lack of elites or fliers and not much cc.

Ultimately I'd like to see some kind of 40k breacher style unit that could be an elites and take the place of the Wolf Guard for the SW Primaris.

Personally I think if GW releases primaris chapter specific units they will be for new "Primaris" chapters at first. They've gone out of their way not to replace or overshadow any of the exisiting marine armies key specialist units. That and making a cool unit for a new chapter, might sell an army compared to a kit that some players may add to an existing one.

Just speculation on my part, but I think/hope they come up with some new stuff.

Aren't grey slayers like breachers but with the option for power weapons also?

Sort of yes, I just mean Primaris in like Aggressor armor with a big shield and either a gun or a melee weapon is what I was thinking of.

I would love some really fluffy next-generation Blood Claw unit. Like a Blood Claw with some sort of Primaris twist, not a rehash of old Blood Claws/Assault Marines. The idea of some sort of combat shield dealy-o-intrigues me - as if  that was the feature of the squad rather than a chainsword? Or they used some assortment of barbarian weapons instead of chainswords? Just thinking aloud.

If you carry a SS that has a equal or better save than your armor save than why linit your mobility with agressors?

I would absolutely love intercessors with chainswords but that would basically make them better grey hunters (without the ability to take special weapons) and I think that's just a little bit too strong.

Really some kind of melee option on primaris would be great, as it stands the only real melee weapons they have is their bolter/flamer fists or the few sergeants or captains power swords, I would love to see a fast melee option (primaris bikes anyone)

  • 3 weeks later...

I'ld hate to speculate wildly, but I think large foot slogging primaris will conviently benefit from a potential Primarch release.

One big Intercessor squad as a meat wall. 2 plasma grey hunter squads that outflank on the cheap. Hypothetical Russ and Njal, 2 more Rune priests. Put bolt Aggressors on both sides of the formation, in Russ Range. Outflank Wulfen with a jp Wolf priest and or Wgbl to join the Troops plus Wulfen. Maybe 2000 points? Fill in with fenrisian wolves as screen.

I hope the Primaris never get any better, and I hope they never get close combat weapons. If they do, people will stop playing legacy marines as they will then become truly unnecessary. And as soon as people stop playing them, GW will no longer have any reason to keep selling them. Of course this may have been GW's plan all along, I guess we'll see.

I think the Primaris Wulfen could be "safely" considered to be able to have 3 to 6 rather than just one.

Still, as expensive as they are, that WGPrL (Wolf Guard Primaris Leader) seems like a really strong option, especially as I'd consider giving every WGPrL the option to take regardless of pack, the Intercessor and Hellblaster weapon options, such as, Bolt Rifle, et. al., and Plasma Incinerator, et. al.

I do however love the idea of seeing how to nativize the various Primaris over time. Still, thinking now hopefully will one day lead to more and new ideas to help and aid GW in the creative process.

I know this might be silly, but I would've liked them to at least rename the primaris units in our codex. I just don't think the rout would be calling a unit 'intercessors' or 'aggressors' - those names sound waaaay too codex compliant.

Even something small to show how the primaris have adapted and integrated into SW culture would've been nice. Instead we got a bunch of lame copy/paste datasheets. :(

I've mainly been playing a Primaris only force with this new codex, and I think the base range of Primaris is in rough enough shape that they shouldn't try and worry about codex specific units just yet.

As a range they struggle in CC, and against armies with lots of armor. They don't have any access to invulnerable saves, and their transport is super expensive. I think a breacher style unit, an artillery unit, a Primaris drop pod, and a fast close combat unit would all help. Even with those additions they'll struggle abit because playing single fraction is really tough, and further limiting yourself within that fraction is crazy if your play group likes soup (I'm lucky on this front)

I think it will be quite a awhile before we reach that point. A lot of the basic marines kits are fairly new, and GW rarely discontinues plastic kits.  If as the fluff moves forward Dante, Logan and other iconic characters start dropping like flies you should start to worry but I doubt it.

The Ironic part, is I think the units that may push out legacy marines are guard units. Scions are better then most troop and elite choices marines have. The base guardsman allows the elite armies to load up on OTT choices while still having CP.
