Brothers of the Fang, I have recent been shown the ways of the wolf and I will soon be converting some of my old marines to the cause. I have been playing Templars since 3rd edition but as they are no longer the melee powerhouse I want them to be, I've decided to follow the path of the wolf. I still have a bunch of old wolf bits from when I wanted to make a 13th company and I have a basic idea of what I want to do.

 

At current I have the following models ready to be wolfed up (dont worry, I'm still keeping most of my templar brothers intact):

 

- about 30 PA marines with BP/CS

- 20 PA marines without arms

- 12 jump pack marines

- 6 bikes

- a NiB devastator squad

- enough wolfy bits to wolf up all of the above

- 20 Khorne Bloodreavers I'm planning to convert into Wulfen (got lots of wolfy weapon bits)

 

At this point I have 2 different lists in my head that I wanna try but I'm not sure how they will work out.

This list is a nice mixed army with some nice spread units. The long fangs can camp a backfield objective with a squad or 2 of grey hunters while everyone else hops in transports and books across the field to take the fight to the enemy. The plan is either holding the wulfen and sky claws in reserve to pop up when and where needed. My major concern is the lack of diverse anti tank options, I have the long fangs and the wulfen but idk if those few hammers and power fists will be enough

This list is all about throwing everything right at the enemy in a flurry of fang and steel! The heavy hitting weapons are spread out enough where if I lose 1 squad then it won't be the end of the world.

 

As things have not yet been assembled I wanted to get your guys opinions of what I should do with my units. These are just 2 lists I was playing around with and I can totally do something else if anyone has any suggestions.

You have a solid understanding of model build priority, wargear spread and placement, as well as the ability to know what you run well. Or, at least, that's my impression.

 

Here's a Bolt Pistol and Chainsword; take both, I had to go get a BP after I was offered both because I didn't think both was an option to accept.

Here's a wine keg sized keg of ale. Drink up; you'll need it.

 

As far as what you know, melee is where the Wolves excel; the surprise is, however, that Wolves can be just about as lethal at long range, so long as you know the fire support needs for your packs. You appear to, so just have at. Your Blood Claw packs are kitted out minimally, which is fine, if that's your best way to run them; please however, consider adding a WGPL to contain them from their Berserk Charge rule. Then again, that can be a strength all on its own, too!

 

As it is, practice your howl, drink mjod, learn to service and maintain your Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, and one day, you too will earn the grey beard and hair of a fully ranked Astartes of the Space Wolves, what is called clearly a Grey Hunter. It will take time; just take your time, all the time you need. Considering you already have a pretty solid range of knowledge due to playing other armies, it's more fitting the old skills into new cogs and wheels to get the same results you're already used to, on the table.

 

As it is, buck up, young one! Blood Claws always start somewhere!

 

Just make sure that if you have to beat your head against the wall, the wall quits, not you. :teehee:

I really like your list, and would like to try it myself except I don't have enough bike models for your swiftclaw gangs. Most of my bike models are characters.

 

my only advice is to get another Long Fang squad somehow. One squad is easily killed unless you outflank them and then use Keen Senses to remove penalty to hit and Wolf's eye. Hmmm, actually scratch that, go for your lone Long Fang murder squad and see how it does. With Outflank, no point on the board will be safe for his vehicles/monsters unless he manages to cover all the board edges.

 

Go for it dude. Give us some battle reports when you are done.

I'm psyched to see what the bloodreavers look like when you're done. Please post a picture of them!

(My wolves seem to be a bit khornate, as well...)

 

In your lists -- The only thing that jumps out at me is: I would try to find a way to get a real weapon (ideally a thunderhammer/stormshield, but I think even a frost sword or something would be better) for the battle leader who has a chainsword.

1-The WGBL really needs more than basic equipment.  He is a close combat beast and it is a shame to waste it.  If you need to skim points at least give him a PF

 

2-The codex is limited to swiftclaws as a biker unit but technically you can crack open the index to use WG Bikers as well.  The WG Bikers are superior

 

Your armored column #2 list has many of the common SW list elements

 

Nobody takes skyclaws/swift claws though so that will be your twist

 

I think a combination of lists 1/2 might serve you better....our long fangs are real good.  And we have stratagems to make them amazing (ignore all penalties when shooting as well as reroll all wounds).

It has been some time but I finally had my first real game with my wolves, batrep below!

 

 

Had a great game against one of my buddy's Blood Angels. He ran 2 tac squads in a rhino, a sanguinary guard squad, a big death company squad, 4 predators (3 baal 1 regular), lemartes, dante, and a gravis captain. I'll link my list at the end.

 

He got turn 1, shot my wulfen to hel but he attempted to assault my grey hunters and my wolf lord and WGBL HI'ed in and the armour of russ stopped them in their tracks, where my 2 characters tore his death company apart (with the help of my hunters).

 

On my turn 1 my grey hunters emptied their plasma guns into the redemptor dreadnought bringing it down a few wounds. The back long fang squad brought it down to 1 wound and the other heavy bolter finished it off. The rest of the devs putting wounds on the regular predator. However killing the redemptor set off a ridiculous chain reaction, it exploded (he rolled a 6 and spent a CP to reroll it and still got a 6) which put loads of mortal wounds on the rest of his tanks and killed lemartes. It actually did enough MW to the wounded predator to kill it, which also in turn exploded dealing yet more mortal wounds. Afterwards my 2 bloodclaws charged into the rhino, nearly surrounding it and destroying it (thankfully it didnt explode) but he still had enough room for one of the squads to escape. Meanwhile my wolf lord and WGBL charged dante and one of his baal predators, killing both (lemartes used his swing back stratagem but whifed)

 

His turn 2 he dropped his sanguinary guard in my backfield, my runepriest decided to us choose of the slain and the long fangs used both flakk missile and hellfire shells to reduce the guard to 2 models. He then shot up my WGBL and finished him off. He tried to assault my king fangs but their overwatch was fire and finished off the remaining 2 (although I lost a plasma cannon to overheating) meanwhile my wolf lord HI into the baal predators, cracking one of the two wide open.

 

He conceded before my turn 2. Overall my long fangs put in work, and although my wulfen died turn one they drew literally all his fire from turn 1, protecting my long fangs and the rest of my army. All in all I'd say SW put in work!

This thread is a great place to continue your Saga. A few things, possibly more. One, many Wolf Heroes aspire to and enjoy writing up their own lore, unless they choose a preset WL or other Leader to be in the Fang. You're the one to choose yours, and there's no wrong answer: the only right one is the one that sings to both your heart and soul. Two, if you are so inclined, continued Battle Reports with such nice looking shots is certainly going to help, please do so. Batreps are getting a little rare around here; I'm honestly debating if I should figure out how to make some! Three, should be last, what are your thoughts for what you'd teach yourself?

 

A little of the "I wish I had known sooner," things, for the hobby's sake.

 

- Loyalist side PA boxes can be kitbashed together. The SW PA box is pretty bling heavy; get one SW PA box and one SM Tac box and mix and match to your liking!

- Dreadnoughts can pretty reliably do the same thing. Plus, over time, you will get spare arms. Please don't clip the arm pegs! Paint elsewhere, or magnetize, and swap around!

- The SW PA box can make a WP and a RP with relative ease

 

WP:

Wolf Head Helm

Wolf Skull Front Torso

Either Wolf Pelt or blank back Torso; Pelt for on foot, blank for magnetized backpacks, for swap out normal and a JP

Wolf Pelt Legs

Shoulder Pads to taste

Thunder Hammer right arm, please clip the hammer head off just above the power plate, above the part on the back upper haft of the handle where the cord connects into it. Replace with the winged Wolf Skull backpack standard

Left arm to taste, pretty well BP or PP

- Not sure on the pocket PF honestly, that's a newer development

 

RP:

Beardy old dude head, should have one massive four strand beard, and a bionic eye.

There should be a front torso that head can only go on; it's pretty clear which one

Same rear torso plate issue as the WP

There's a two handed power axe you'll need - trim the thing to a slim, flat spade, like a spear turned into a flat but strong shovel. Narrow; you will need to glue two of the decorative wolf skull trinkets onto the flat sides for the space to glue down well.

Legs I prefer the Rune Greaves

How did your game feel?

It felt very good, overall even though I lost my wulfen turn 1, i think he was so terrified of them (so much so that he even through the bolters from his death company at them to kill the last model) that he neglected the rest of my army, especially my long fangs, which arguably did the most damage to his army!

 

What do you hope to remember and retain going forward?

Something big and scary up front will trick your opponent into giving up any strategy they had just to get rid of it!

 

How might you improve further?

I think playing more games and just learning my army more and more will really help me improve (I'm also working on templates for datasheet cards, the stratagem cards really helped me remember what I had and I think unit cards would help me remember what squad has what)

 

Any plans thus far to cover and / or recover from mistakes?

Honestly I cant think of any real mistakes I made this game, I'm sure there is something I forgot but I made extra sure to keep track of everything going on.

 

Any units you want to try out?

I kinda want to try out some sky/swift claws, make them the outflankers cornering my enemies in the jawsbof the wolf

Lore is 100% something I'm working on (see my black templar thread for my fun lore) but I've not decided on a name for my wolf lord or his company yet. I do have an idea for the lore (company that was lost in the warp following the return to fenris, fought their way back to find an imperium changed and pledging to bring swift ferocious death to the enemies of humanity)

 

As for batreps, I plan to always take pics and notes on the battle so I can do them every time I play (I'm part of a league where we post our battle reports and i might as well just post them here if I'm writing them up anyway haha)

So actually I recently came upon an amazing lot of space wolves from a friend who is moving out of state, included among them were about 50 PA marines (most of which were armed with the traditional bolter/Bolt pistol/chain sword), 20 long fangs (including the spare bitz to make all of the weapons), 5 3rd party thunder wolves (from back before the models existed), like 5+ fenrisian wolves, 2 wolf lords (made from the commander sprues plus some extra wolf bits), Lukas, and some other special character I dont recognize (I think its krom? He is missing an arm)

 

With all of that I have so many extra bodies and legs so I can easily make any other models I really want so I think I'm set on models for the foreseeable future but thanks for the hints on making rune and wolf priests!

So last night I played a 2k game against a friends fluffy mixed AdMech/guard army. Sadly I lost to objectives but I was trying out my new army comp and wanted to give it a good run.

 

His list was 6 units of vanguard with 3 plasmas each, a bunch of tech priests, some servitor squads, and like 6 chimeras.

 

I was running my traditional core (4 double plasma grey hunters, 2 10man blood claws, one of each HQ, wulfen, and 2 longfangs) with some added skyclaws for extra oomph.

 

I got first turn and threw everything I had at both objectives as well as killing his chimeras (which he used as a wall to protect his units) which was my first mistake. On his turn the remaining chimera parted and he unloaded on my units.

 

My second turn I redoubled my efforts are started going after his regular units and the remaining chimera. He then continued shooting my units to pieces.

 

By my third turn, I was just running for any objectives I could, I managed to kill his warlord with with wolf priest and WGBL (although he died to overwatch) and by the end of his third turn I conceded with only the long fangs and rune priest remaining on the board.

 

Some things I've learned from this game:

1. It is incredibly difficult to play a melee oriented army this edition. The best we can hope for is to make a hybrid melee gunline that can just do both. Bloodclaws are good but they just dont have staying power, I may try running them as smaller squads to see if that helps but it seems like Grey Hunters are just better equipped for the task.

2. Marine killing weapons are super prevalent. The fact that each of those squads of Vanguard had 3 plasmas and 7 ablative wounds (even if they are 4+ T3 models) and still has BS 3+ for 113 points is disgusting. There are always a lot of threats and very little in the way of protection for an assault oriented army (cover only gets you so close).

3. Skyclaws and wulfen cost too much for anything other than a distraction unit unless minimally equipped. Wulfen are very tough and amazingly powerful but they are focused HARD because my opponents know exactly what they do, I've not had a single game so far where they survive past my opponent's first turn. Skyclaws are good but I'd rather have a unit of bloodclaws in a rhino, they're less maneuverable but way more resilient, and have the added benefit of being troops.

 

My next game with my wolves will be a hybrid gunline to see if that will be more effective. Having to throw myself into the enemy's guns just to be effective is not a good strategy.

Terrain will fix many of your complaints.

 

Shooting > assault on planet bowling ball.

 

If you have ruins to enter or LOS blocking infantry become much more powerful.

 

Wulfen are awesome running through buildings and only popping out when charging a target.

 

I fear mortars and wyverns more than anything else with my wulfen because of ignoring LOS

My gaming group actually have been using a very specific terrain setup at my FLGS and now that I think about it idk how good it is for specific armies.

 

It is as follows, imagine the board in divided into 6 equal pieces, terrain is set up thusly:

RSH

HSR

Where R are ruins, S is scatter terrain or forests, and H is a LoS blocking hill

The center of the board contains a roughly 8"×14" LoS blocking terrain piece that counts as being infinity tall

 

This has been a fairly good balanced terrain setup but makes for boring boards

You put 2 large line of sight blocking pieces in the middle of the board, about 8-12" apart, then about 8 smaller LOS blocking pieces around them. It gives plenty of cover for CC armies, and some good corridors of fire for gun lines.

I also suggest playing the ITC ruins rules, where the bottom level of all ruins are line of sight blocking. You can't see through windows, doors, holes in the walls etc. Just imagine it as your guys are hugging the cover with the intention of staying out of sight.

After showing this to my gaming group, they informed me that this is actually our new standard for both our ladder league as well as the tournaments so clearly they also like this NOVA style of terrain setup (although we will still be doing ITC terrain RULES because we like the 1st floor ruins blocking LoS)

 

I'm reworking my list to see how I can get more mileage out of my units

Wulfen and bloodclaws went on the hunt for later. I moved my intercessors and wolf priest up the left side of the board while my wolf lord, long fangs, and rune priest moved up the right. WHBL went right up the middle to hold the center objective while the 2 primaris HQ stuck with the intercessor squads on the left for the rerolls. Rune priest got storm caller off and I used cloaked by the storm. Shot most of his guard and scouts then charged my wolf lord and priest into the remaining scouts to both kill them off and hold the side objectives, I score 1 for holding, 1 for killing, 1 for crucible of champions, and 1 for butcher's bill.

 

UM turn 1:

His levithian murders my wolf priest (I drastically underestimated his shot output) after getting a shot from his vindicare. Otherwise not much else happens, I lose a single long fang and 1 intercessor squad. My opponent scores 1 for holding, 1 for killing, 1 for first strike (old school), and 1 for headhunter.

 

End of turn:

I score 1 for hold more, no one scores kill more.

 

SW turn 2:

Primaris HQ drop back toward objective in my DZ to make up for CoC bonus but are just an inch out of range. Everything else moves up to engage. Wulfen and bloodclaws drop in on the right side directly in my opponent's face. Long fangs blow away 6 intercessors but not much else happens from shooting. All my on the hunt squads fail their charges and leer menacingly at his front lines. I score 1 for holding.

 

UM turn 2:

His vindicare gets lucky and straight ganks my wolf lord (stupid -2 ap ignore invuln bullets) and he murders one of my blood claws with weight of shots while his leviathan wipes 2 more of my intercessors squads. My opponent scores 1 for holding, 1 for killing, 1 for marked for death, and 1 for slay the warlord(old school).

 

End of turn:

I score 1 for hold more, my opponent scores 1 for kill more.

 

SW turn 3:

My primaris HQ finally make it back to the DZ objective while the wulfen and remaining blood claws charge his lines. My central intercessors and DZ intercessors hammer down one of infantry squad to 2 models but he uses the 2CP strat to save them (boo). The long fangs manage to kill almost an entire scout bike squad and the remaining intercessors just sat to hold objectives. The wulfen and bloodclaws crash into his front lines and wipe out a scout bike squad and put the hurt on his remaining guardsmen and intercessors (but the sadly live) I score 1 for holding, 1 for killing, 1 for CoC bonus and 1 for butcher's bill.

 

UM turn 3:

Levithian comes in and murders my 2 long fangs. His shooting from the contemptor ad remaining bikes kills my wulfen, while gulliman and his victrix guard assault my intercessors and WGBL in the middle (but thanks to poor positioning and order or activation gulliman doesnt get to swing) killing all but 1 intercessor. My opponent scores 1 for holding and 1 for killing.

 

End of turn:

I score 1 for hold more, opponent scores 1 for kill more.

 

We ran out of time so we called it here.

 

End of game: I scored 3 for ground control.

 

We ended up tieing but if we had more time he would have won hands down. Overall I noticed that intercessors are way better than Grey Hunters on a point efficiency matter but my list is still lacking some oomph. I dont WANT to do soup but everyone keeps telling me I should take a loyal 32 for the extra cheap bodies.

 

Overall I think with some more tweaks I can get this list to a better state without needing to soup but I'm open to suggestions.

Space wolves need to spend points on elites and heavy rather than chase battalion CP

 

The new ITC rules only award space wolf points for 100% army now.

 

If you dip your toe in soup for tournament play you are going to be in for a rude awakening when you see people who embrace soup 100%

 

However, if you dont care about ITC faction points and just want to boost your army yes...CP soup is better and cheaper

Going to agree with you about GH vs Intercessors. I want GH to be great but Intercessors just have more wounds and only slightly less damage. It's just transports that are killing them.

 

Don't compromise your army. As a wise grot once said. Meta is the path to the WAAC side. Meta leads to loyal 32. Loyal 32 leads to Knights. Knights leads to suffering.

 

Also everytime I see this thread title I see "wives of Fenris" and think someone is doing a SoB on fenris.

I'll be honest I don't want a meta WAAC army, I do want to be competitive in my local meta though, and my local meta is drukari, Ynnari, craftworld and marines with some slightly less meta armies thrown in, not that anyone plays meta lists, we usually just use whatever is fun.

 

On the GH vs Intercessors front, I want to like GH more but they're just too expensive. The same honestly goes for blood claws, if they were more in line with scout squads points it would be better but overall I just find all marines too expensive for what they can do. There is always next edition I suppose

 

I shouldn't complain too much about my wolves, my win ratio is about 50:50 in my meta so they must be doing something right!

Wow it has been some time huh, I have a friendly 1k point tournament at the end of the month and I decided to dust off my SW and give it an honest go. With that in mind, I kinda have to finish building the army up a bit so I decided to finally work on my wulfen berserkers conversion again!
