PAGK - Magnetizing

I've been holding off on finishing my GK army until CA 2018 hits. Could use some advice about magnetization.

 

There's about 40 PAGK left to work on. I want to be able to interchange them between Strike Squads and Intercessors. I have a pile of N52 Neodymium magnets of the appropriate size and will use thin metal plating so I don't need to worry about polarity. I also have a ton of bits, including shoulder pads, shields, and all sorts of other stuff.

 

From what I've seen, PAGK backpacks are easy to magnetize and arms are harder. The heads don't concern me, I can just paint some with white helmets if I need Purifiers.

 

Does anyone actually magnetize the arms or is this overkill? If so, any hints to share?

 

How do you store your magnetized bits? If I've got an extra backpack and arm set for each model, that's going to be a lot to keep track of.

 

With regards to heavy weapons, I would be more likely to magentize these than falchions / swords / halberds. I haven't thought through the logic of that yet, and whether or not I would have the right arm bits to get everything. Any hints would be appreciated.

Here are a few tips:

 

I'd go with magnets on both sides. Although you have to be careful about polarity, the bond will be stronger.

 

There is also a trick to not switch the polarity.

 

Start with one piece, lets say the left arm. Drill a hole and glue a magnet in. Once it is dry take the stack of magnets and let it connect with the magnet in the arm. Now drill a hole in the torso. Take the arm with the stack of magnets and slide your hobby knife between the outermost magnet and the rest. Press the single magnet into the hole in the torso (preferably with the rest of the magnets still on the hobby blade and glue in the hole). Once the glue is dry arm and torso can easily connect.

 

If you now want to make a different left arm, drill a hole in the arm and repeat the procedure above but with the stack of magnets on the torso.

 

instead of doing the left torso magnet next, I suggest you make the right arm first. Here put the stack of magnets on the left arm and press them into the hole on the right arm, that way you make sure that all four magnets in the figure attract each other. 

 

While the easiest way to magnetize back packs is to glue one magnet into the indentation on the backpack and cut off the nub on the torso, I advise against it. While the backpack won't come off this way, it can rotate quite easily. Try to put the magnets above the nub and the indentation. That way the backpack can't rotate.

 

Magnetizing arms is easy. Glue the torso halves together and let them dry. Take a drill and drill holes in the torso and the arms. glue magnets in (or use ferric plates on one side). The problem comes with the needed bits, I am not sure if the box has enough shoulder pads. You may have to get some elsewhere.

 

Magnetizing at the wrists is only marginally more difficult. Just use 2mm x 1mm instead of 3mm x 1mm. Since I don't have the PAGK box I cannot give you specific tips there.

Why would you want to magnetize all the arms? I myself only magnetize the weapons I'd definitely want to swap once in a while, and even then, it's just the weapons. You'll save a fortune on shoulder pads if you magnetize the wrists only.
