Help painting Osiron contemptor

Galloway

Recommended Posts

Hi all-

I'm painting up an Osiron contemptor for call of chaos, and am a bit stuck painting the runes on the shoulders and legs. What I'm going for is gold or silver runes on a metallic black background, but I can't find a good way to pick out just the runes without getting a lot of "slop over" for lack of a better word. I've seen suggestions to essentially paint them by using multiple coats of really watered down paint, but not sure how well this will work for a metallic rune color (haven't had much luck so far). Was wondering if anyone here had any luck painting in the runes, and/or had any suggestions.

when I did my first one (another one on the waiting list...) I used a wash to get the runes done then carefully painted/drybrushed over the pads avoiding the runes (the drybrush prevented too much paint getting in them):

The advice above sounds sensible to me. If you want to try something else, see if you can pick up some gold or silver artists' quality gouache. Gouache is a heavy body paint that can be re-wetted to make it workable – not great for general miniature use, but perfect for recessed areas like this, where it won't get rubbed.

Goauche can be used just like an acrylic – so you can dilute it and clean your brushes using water (i.e. no need for any turps or white spirit).

1) Paint the area your with your base colour (metallic black) acrylic paint, and allow to dry.

2) Paint the silver gouache over the whole area, and leave to dry.

3) Use a damp cotton bud (or similar) to wipe the surface layer away, leaving the paint just in the recesses.

Thanks for suggestions all. I've given the underpaint gold + paint over in black then back and forth to neaten up my best shot, think it came out ok for legs but not sold on shoulders. What do people think? Pondering stripping paint off, then trying fresh- hopefully easier to pick out runes that way. Alternatively, could switch from black with gold runes to gold with  green runes, like cartouches on headdress.

@Tichinde- as Skerr said, beautiful and well done model. Looking forward to seeing the next one.

Thanks!

that looks pretty good to me, I'd suggest maybe going back over the black with a couple of light layers to make the runes stand out a bit more, but I do like the sound of the gold with green runes!

my next one will be in 40K colours (once I decide what gun to give it) and if you need any more inspiration Tzen did one recently:
