Which FW unit to add?

Hi fellow death guard players, I wondered if you could help me choose which unit from FW to add to my army.

I have all the models from GW (Morty, drones, PBC, etc) and have some spare cash so thought I would treat myself :-)

I currently own two FW models, my Leviathan which has two butcher cannons and a drill (magnetised) and a sicaran battle tank.  Units I am considering would be either the Deredeo with the missiles and autocannons or a death guard contemptor - but I am unsure on load out (was thinking dual butcher cannon using the autocannon weapons and the missile pod).

I love my Levi - but I have used it twice and twice it has been blown off the table very quickly (it does draw some fire though and that is shots not hitting other things).

Reason I am considering the two units above is for the additional fire support.

Cheers for any input.

I would either get another Leviathan so you have two or buy two Deredeos. There aren’t many units that do well in lists by themselves as they wind up focused down pretty quickly.

A pair of Contemptors would be nice too. I know they are expensive and you don’t have to buy both at once but that’s what I’d be aiming for, and it’s what I’m doing myself.

I love the Levi (the model is my favourite), but man they are a fair few points each.

The Deredeo interests me as it is more of a back field unit, so I could put him down behind a screen and pump out some support fire.

I think (again don't have the stuff to hand) that the contemptors are the cheapest unit (but it is my least favourite model aesthetics wise)

Levi's are a ton of points, but one of the better dreads out there.  But they will go down quick (my Levi's have a bad tendency to go down to Deepstrike Deathwing squads).  It's kinda unfortunate that the 'modern' chaos warbands don't get quite the same fun toys that their legion and loyalist counterparts get.

Well, if you're looking for fire support and don't mind the polarizing view of the Deredeo (love 'em, personally) then it's a really good option.  I'll admit I like the Greater Havoc launcher for pestering fragile support units trying to sneak up behind buildings and the like.  Nice strength, decent volume of shots, good range, but in practice mine get chewed up by armagers which are a pretty good analogue. It depends what your primary targets are, but the Deredeo is very good for blowing away heavy infantry and even chewing up vehicles, the contemptors with dual butcher cannons are great for the same purpose (and yeah, a lot cheaper, not to mention faster) while the dual kheres assault cannons are equally nice for chewing up those 'T3 swarm infantry.

But if you want something a little threatening towards those super heavy 3 wounders and vehicles... might I consider something like a Vindicator Laser Destroyer? It's got a decent mid-range punch, does base 3 damage with a potential of 4 shots, tough for a Rhino chassis.

I play against my son mainly, ultrasmurfs.

I got him a vindicator laser destroyer when I took him to WHW for our birthdays (5 days between us). That's when I got my sicaran, which is lovely but he can take that out with ease also. I was looking at the sicaran venerator (if that is what it's called) as it looks like a great anti tank weapon. Wife's getting me a Typhon tank for Xmas :-) but doubt it will get used much as it's a tad strong to bring to a match with your son lol

Hah, I hear ya!  Typhon ain't bad, it sure isn't the beast that it is in 30K and it's one scaaary chunk of points for having to actually hit these days, and while it's tough, against something like a Laser Destroyer or even a solid hit by a Land Raider it's going to be struggling.  -laughs- He made a good choice with that destroyer as that can get a -lot- of solid use :)

Aye, the Venator is a pretty great weapon buuuut much like the Sicaran punisher/Arcus/Omega, us old Horusian legion sorts don't get to use 'em for 8E, just the Emperor's lot have access to 'em.  The Vindi is a surprising addition given how stripped down the FW indicies are for Chaos, and its big brother the Cerberus is in a really weird spot of forcing leadership tests.  On the other hand, the Spartans are still pretty solid in this day and age.

My three favorite Forge World models are the Spartan, the Fellblade, and the Fire Raptor.  They are beautiful models, and solid units on the tabletop--albeit expensive units (both in terms of real world money and in-game points).  I have pictures of these models in my army in my gallery if you want to check them out.

If your looking to mow down large numbersthe fire raptor is great. Lots of shots and the -1 to hit helps. If you want more fun models to play with your son the nurgle plague hulk is one of my favourites, not great on the table but it looks awesome. Other then that there are so e really nice deal on princes, a d named team on princes like scabbiethax. Mamon is a great model and I think the game him the death guard key word so he fits in the army easily.

I really like my Soul Burner Petard Decimator. Yea it attracts a ton of attention but the synergies with DG are fantastic.

I haven’t painted him yet because I bounce him between my DG and Thousand Sons and works equally well with both.

I love the model Prot, has to be one of the coolest ones available. Can you just slot a decimator into the DG or do you need a chaos detachment?

I can't stop looking at the fellblade tank, but wife would kill me for buying it (as I'd need two one for me and one for my son)

It slots right into the DG detachment as an elite. I would love a second one but only own one. It clocks in  at about 210 with dual Petards. You don't have to go dual petards, I bought the Petard arms just as FW greatly increased the cost of the weapon. So it's point heavy and does serious damage so beware it is massively targeted and its role is slightly diminished with the arrival of Helverin Knights, That said the keyword Death Guard and the fact it's a 'Daemon' unit gives you some pretty fun angles and tricks to use in the Psychic phase and aura wise if you use Nurgle too.

That's my two cents anyway.  There's other very cool stuff, I just don't have a lot of experience with it. I still think I'd love a Sicaran tank in this army too.
