Siege of Terra - Primarch duels

Recommended Posts

From memory of the original HH story, don't think any of the primarchs had been set head to head, closest it came was the stare down between Sanguinius and Angron.

Can't remember if that was before or after he broke ka'banda's back but think that particular scene will be retconned into being Angron as he's now in daemonhood plus Sanguinius already done this on Signus prime so would be surprised if this repeats at the siege

As @Blood Angel Scout said, ***officially*** the only things that have been canon was a staredown between Sanguinius and Angron and then the events on board the Vengeful Spirit (Sanguinius vs Horus; The Emperor vs Horus).

That being said, there has (naturally) been quite a bit of ***speculation*** about others that may/could/should happen:

Sanguinius vs Angron: actual fisticuffs

Khan vs Mortarion, round 2 (round 1 was in the HH novel Scars)

somebody vs Fulgrim

some kind of showdown (whether actual 1:1 fight or more of a chess match) between Dorn and Perturabo

Knowing BL, I would put money on the idea that they will say that the reason Dorn didn't get to Horus until after the Emperor was wounded is because he was caught up in a duel of his own (probably against someone like Lorgar).

But again, (AFAIK) officially, there are no historical descriptions of actual duels at the SoT beyond the famous stuff aboard the Vengeful Spirit.

IIRC, it was stated in an article from Black Library that Fulgrim would be going up against the Khan.

Aside from that, I think Vulkan would be a solid match up for Morty.

I'd rather not see Sanguinius go up against his brothers, we already know that's he dies on the Spirit of Vengeance, so any fight against his tainted brothers (while epic) would ultimately be a forgone conclusion.

Likewise, I don't want to see Dorn fighting his brothers as he was a far better tactician than fighter. He should be in the command center telling everyone where to go and what to do.

Wouldn't bet my money on Lorgar vs. Horus. The last time did not end well for poor little archtraitor.

Somehow, I can imagine a Vulkan vs. Fulgrim fight, IF Vulkan will actively participate. Haven't read Old Earth so I don't know his exact role in the Siege.

Someone would need to take care of Angron and Magnus, as well. All traitor Primarchs participated, right?

Difficult to deal with them all with only 4 loyal ones and Valdor.

We definitely need to see a major moment for Sanguinius, one that allows him to really let loose.

If that does not happen I would consider it a massive missed opportunity. Sanguinius vs a fully unleashed Angron would be a good opportunity but I see more scenario's than just that one.

As mentioned, Fulgrim vs Khan has been mentioned/hinted at already by BL. That could mean the Khan faces Fulgrim and Mortarion at some points.

I like Vulkan as well as someone who could really get a good moment here. Dorn also.

Seeing some of Horus' immense chaotic power and potential during the Siege would be essential to me.

Finally, Magnus, very much interested in his Siege appearances.

To be fair, Dorn will duel but not in the physical sense, it will be a duel of tactics against Pert which I really look forward to seeing.

I would love Khan to go against Fulgrim and teach him a lesson :)

i actually liked the stare down match as originally depicted and would prefer it to an actual brawl.

it gave the impression there was possibly some sort of psychic/mental component to it all beyond bam pow whack

Yeah, I want the Dorn/Perturabo showdown to be more akin to chessmasters facing off across the board (or two 40k players :tongue.: ). They should be both in their command centres, deploying and redeploying troops against each other.

a heated game of jenga would sort things out

I hope for as few QCQ duels as possible, honestly. These are two colossal forces coming to a head, it's time to see the primarchs lead rather than throw themselves into their brother's swords. The ones extrapolated out of old lore don't rankle too much, Jaghatai v Fulgrim and Sanguinius v Angron could be fun, especially if one of the daemon primarchs got banished. Would help add some weight to what's generally "I thought it would look cool, story be damned" when it comes to these primarch punch-ups. A video-chat between Pert and Dorn wouldn't be unwelcome either.

Heck, give them some naval duels. Seeing one take another's fleet apart would be more than satisfactory, and stay meaningful.

A video chat between Dorn and Pert would be incredible.

For me, the tensest moment of KNF was the hololith chat between Guilliman and Lorgar. The resentment of those two pales to nothingness next to that of Dorn and Pert.

Both could be so smugly confident.

Glorious.

Dorn has already had his big duel against Alpharius right at the start of the war for Terra, so I think it's unlikely he'll cross swords with another brother.

I think Sanguinius needs a big epic against Angron, just to show him at peak power and glory before he takes on Horus.

I feel like Dorn wouldn't be smug. I'd love to see a reprise of The Lightning Tower

I think mayhaps he may be.

Recall that very old bit of canon, where Horus asks Dorn if he and The Fists could hold against any attacker at (I think it was?) The Imperial Palace and this sets Perturabo off on a rage? All respect to Dorn, but how one could estimate that they could hold against any attacker.... especially in the face of an intense rivalry.... sure... Dorn wasn't being smug at all... sure.

I figure that as Dorn assuming that He would be with them. Regardless, nothing in his character suggests arrogance, let alone smugness. This isn't to say that Dorn didn't underestimate the effectiveness of "throwing men at walls".

I agree with Roomsky and hope we don't get too many inconclusive CQC duels. As those pile up, it diminishes the impact of the very few that did have lethal consequences and starts getting too cape comics for me. It's a tough spot for the writer as confrontations are expected, i just hope they can be sufficiently inventive.

With a lot of the traitors already being demon-primarchs or in other ways chaotically boosted it should be interestingto see how the loyalists tackle them. Sanguinius brute forcing an ascended Angron, or the Khan winning a sword duel with a now four armed Fulgrim is not really something i want to see. Sanguinius badly needs his big moments , but i wouldn't like to see it tackled in a way that goes against all the evidence we've had so far that the Chaos primarchs have gone beyond their brothers in terms of raw power and tend to need a bit more thought to defeat.
