Intercessor Loadouts for Space Wolves

Hi Folks,

I'm currently toying with the idea of doing a new Primaris Space Wolves army, as lots of people have posted amazing conversions of Primaris Wulfen and characters, and I feel suitably inspired.

How would you guys go ahead with arming your Intercessors?

I've always gone with Bolt Rifles, but also like the thought of using Auto Bolt Rifles to advance aggressively.

What do you think?

Cheers,

WW

I cant really see a reason why you would ever take either the assault weapons or the heavy weapons. The Stalker rifles don't give you enough fire power for the cost, and the assault bolters loose the benifit of AP all together.

IMO they should all be the same price. What you loose from the rapid fire bolt rifles is too great to take either of the other two options in my opinion.

I prefer the Bolt Rifles for the versatility. Good range and fire twice at 15" make them solid for objective holders, rapid fire and -1 AP makes them better than the assault variant when they are On the Hunt.

I have 2 units of MSU intercessors I just assembled and need to field test.

Squad A-Has the auxiliary grenade launcher and default bolters. I plan to use it midfield to support my push and then hold an objective if they live. I will play them just like my GH (they are superior chaff but still just chaff).

Squad B-Has the stalker bolt rifle. It cost more but I think having AP-2 and a bump in range is worth it. They will be set up in my DZ preferably near cover and hopefully never move.

This loadout is cheaper than a GH unit with special weapons and gives me 10 wounds worth of objective sitters. The only thing the unit can't handle is T5+. That doesn't bother me much b/c my other backfield unit is long fangs who will gladly take the job.

Personally I find bolt rifles and an AGL cheap and effective. They are twice as durable as Grey Hunters with better range and AP. They make great objective campers.

If you want to start moving up close to the enemy, I think we have better tools in our arsenal.

If Intercessors excel at any one thing, it is the proper role that Grey Hunters should: being a camp and snipe or very light fire support to clear enemy chaff. The real problem is their and many other 6" move PA models drastic dearth of mobility. While footslogging is a great thing at times, sometimes transports can greatly help provide pressure and change up battlefield flanking options.

Please don't take this as a post about how footslogging is a mistake. If you can run a slog list, by all means, please do so. I just have a meta where I MUST have transports or else all the firepower brought to bear on my infantry is just too much over time.

Intercessors seem to be best with the Bolt Rifle. I personally plan to give the Intercessor Pack Leader a Chainsword. I am unsure about the AGL's, however if I can finagle points I might just be able to squeeze some into my list.

I've been mainly running a "Primaris Only" Space wolf force, and for my intercessors I typically run two squads with the bolt rifles, and one with auto bolt rifles. I give every pack leader a chainsword and I have an AGL in every squad.

In a primaris only force I think you need a troop choice with some speed, because our transports are so expensive. So having a unit that you can use to make a push for objectives late, or that can keep up with characters/aggressors is important. Overall the bolt rifle is better imo but they have a spot in a primaris force.

I’d be interested in hearing your experience with an all Primaris force, as this is something I’m thinking of doing.

What are your unit choices looking like?

Right now the list i'm running is:

Gravis captain

librarian

Wolf guard battle leader

the three intesscessor squads

4 aggressors

2 units of helblasters 1 with rapid fire, 1 with assault option (flyers are pretty popular in my area and these guys with keen senses are great at taking them out)

1 repulsor

My play group is pretty low key, I wouldn't recommend Primaris if your meta is competitive. If your friends mainly play one armies lists you'll be ok but Primaris are fairly limited right now, they just don't have enough units yet. IF I know i'm going to be playing a more competitive force I will ally in a knight and some armigers because they really address the weak spots Primaris have.

Chapter Approved may change this but I would build up your force slowy because I'm sure that there will be a second wave that might make it more viable. For me I just really love the scale of primaris so I'll take the drawbacks in stride. I wouldn't recommend either the repulsor or redemptors at this point I think they need a large point decrease (cool models though).

Thanks for your feedback, really helpful. My Novamarines list is quite similar. Seems it’s a standard load out for Primaris. I’ll probably add Wulfen though. Thinking about a Primaris Ragnar too.
