Skyshield Defence

Hey everyone,

Just had a bit of a thought, my current army plan has a watch captain with dominus aegis protecting 2 Ven dreads as my main source of AA. Now I was thinking what about using the Skyshield maybe instead as it offers an advantage of height. Even when it is destroyed it is treated as ruins which do not get removed so the height advantage would still apply. I was thinking that with orkz about to come out being able to stay away from there close combat abilities will be very helpful.

Opinions?

But what advantage does height give you under 8th edition Charge/Combat phase rules?

They need to climb it, obviously.

Height has a more important advantage, though...LoS. A relatively immobile group like that can be easily avoided (at least on 95% of the tables I see), so it's pretty beneficial that way.

It takes up 1 points that you can not really afford to spend on it and 2 it consumes a force org slot that you again can not afford to consume. If you are that worried about air defense consider a Xyphon?

Naw, you can afford to add it both points and detachment wise. Few DW armies even at the high end of tournaments fill out three detachments.

Not really looking at tournament OR air defense. Just another speed bump to assault units. Has there been a clear ruling if enemy units can be ontop of this?

Don't see why they couldn't.  While you paid for it, once it's on the table it's just another piece of terrain.  Honestly it isn't going to stop a dedicated assault unit from getting to your KTs if they really want to, in my experience.

The only trick i am aware of regarding a skyshield is the old one with an eldar lynx and abusing rules to give them free repairs and a 4++ save.  If your looking for terrain that could provide a useful turtle position would not a void shield generator be a better choice?

If they deep strike, yes, but didn't recent FAQ pretty much said you can string your unit around the edge of building to shut down assaults completely if enemy can't place his models there?

Funny idea, Skyshield ontop of a Skyshield. Raises a bunch of stupid unwritten rules and makes the minimum charge like 10 inches if possible... 2 dreadnoughts could shutdown deepstrike bubble ontop I believe if placed correctly. Plus does the Skyshield itself prevent being within 9" ?

Static defence emplacements announce where your deploying and are suited to planetstrike Apocalypse and large narrative games.

Your also having to shift scenery around to accommodate the piece and then you have discussions about them, there just hassle you don't need in general casual as well as comp games.
