Brilliant bit of joking with that Primaris Lieutenant, they had me laughing out loud too. The venomcrawler is just lovely, and I actually really want to corrupt that new Librarian! I’m not so sure about the fleshy bits on the Oblits either but I can see minimizing that by kitbashing them with the new ambuls

In terms of new Abby preview, it definitely looks like an update of the previous model keeping as many of its quirks and details intact as possible, similar to what we've seen from Khârn, Ahriman, or even the recent throwback noise marine. Personally, that's not the direction I would have preferred. Nothing against the old Abaddon design, but I was hoping for something more warped & twisted & visibly chaotic. Still, while the overall direction might not have been what I'd have chosen, what little we can see of the execution is certainly impressive. I like the more curved claws on the Talon in particular. Definitely looking forward to a more complete view.

Hopefully the cloak & fur is removable, as I'd rather match the old aesthetic if possible. They have stuck pretty closely to old art though, which I like, and it doesn't look like they've changed his armour like they did for Typhon.

Not a huge fan of the Obliterator, but the other stuff is bloody fantastic, seriously cannot wait for this release and to see what's still in the box.

Abaddon the 'Primaris Lieutenant' gave me a good chuckle, I like that they're keeping to a similar aesthetic, I wouldn't have liked some sort of twisted Guilliman model. The Talon looks very well done.

C'mon, he's gotta have the villain cape biggrin.png

Interesting that they seem to have removed his trophy racks. Edit: there might be one central one left, actually. But most of them are gone.

I like him more without the cape. Every Chaos Lord from fantasy and 40k has the exact same cloak with fur combo - just look at Mallex - and it's good, don't get me wrong, but I want him to stand out, and so will be removing it if possible.

Good point on the trophy racks though, I hadn't noticed that through the red mist of excitement. Still too happy to quibble just yet

This is just nitpicking on my part, but I'd have loved to see him return in Cataphractii armor. the Indomitus pauldrons are far more iconic, but I can't see why he'd change armor types when Typhus did not. Plus, his shins faintly resemble those of his 30k iteration I think.

Be that as it may, I can't wait to pick him up and paint him!

Well he is stood on a Primaris Leiutenant of some sort, look at the helmet stripes in the last picture, but what armour pattern is that? Confirmed new Primaaris Leiutenant and you suckers all thought this was about Abaddon teaser.

Typhus is a bloated and warped plague marine, fitting armour to him isn't easy.

Indomitus Armour is supposed to be have been the best most modern armour at the time of the Heresy that Horus kept for his most loyal followers. Chaos terminators have always had Indomitus for a reason. Its Forge World that messed things up by making Great Crusade models that didn't fit the Heresy background. Cataphracti armour should be the worst form of terminator armour that any warrior would want to get rid of in favour of more mobility but the way the rules work it ended up as terminator armour+.

http://wh40k.lexican...donvsLokken.jpg

That looks more like proto-Indomitus with cataphracti pads than the Cataphracti armour of the HH character series version.

Blightlords and the Lord of Contagion have a mixture of Cataphracti and Indomitus parts, which makes the most sense for Heresy veterans to me. Having the background for the armour marks talk about field repairs and how armour wears out over a campaign and then having those suits of armour last for thousands of years makes no sense.

I would imagine at some point that he either has his Warpsmiths fashion new armour or he just plain takes it from a (suitably large!) Astartes. I kind of hope it’s indomitus, though wouldn’t mind if it was Caterphratii :tu:

I am assuming he is going to be as big as nu-Calgar.

True, but Indomitus-pattern was rare as hell during the heresy. The most common patterns were Cataphractii and Tartaros. Beyond that, Abaddon's terminator armor is known to be artificer-wrought and custom-fitted to his body because he was too big for regular suits. We know it's still the same suit thanks to the Black Legion novels. Besides, I'd be surprised if the Warmaster - the most resourceful chaos space marine around - couldn't be able to find replacement parts for his suit, even if it is one of the rarest armor patterns in the galaxy by now. Hellforges in eyespace are a thing too.

The only undisputable reason to give him Indomitus armor is because it's an iconic design that's held true for over twenty years now, and that's good enough for me.

As an aside, Cataphractii armor providing the best protection of all terminator suits is a thing in the lore aswell. It's attributed to addtional field generators built into the shoulderpads iirc.

I could be wrong but judging from the size of his foot (about the same size as the lieutenant's torso) he'll probably be about guilliman size

A few hints about what we are looking at.

Checking the frames of Abaddon in the video, I noticed some cables protruding from the shooting arm and Justaerin symbols on the shoulder pad.

Along with the cape, this appears to be a significant update to the model.

The artwork for Shadowspear also depicts what appear to be Possessed, which would make sense given the new character. If that's the case, all standard Chaos infantry (other than Cultists) will have received a refresh. The only Cult troops remaining would be Berzerkers and Noise Marines.

I'm intrigued by what I see. Looking forward to learning more.

You know what, I'm not happy about these new Chaos releases.  Damn you, GW, damn you - I'm supposed to focus on Kill Team, painting AoS Nighthaunts, and starting a loyalist Marine army this year.  THAT'S what I'm supposed to be doing.  And now, you throw this release out there, and I'm going to have to return to my Legion of Taurus, aren't I?!!?  Damn you to the Warp, GW... ;) teehee.gif

Seriously, aside from the fleshy bits of the Obliterator not looking daemonic enough (easily fixed with greenstuff and some tubing), I honestly can't wait to see the rest of this set - I shall defo be getting it (for sale: one set of goody-two-shoes Primaris types :P biggrin.png ), I may sell on the Venomcrawler (if I decide to do one, I'll convert/scratchbuild one that fits the aesthetic of Chaos Marine army), but the rest will find a home in my collection.

I'm hoping that we get a Black Legion or Black Crusade codex not long after - and along with the stuff that was recently included in BSF (Traitor Guard, Beastmen), I hope that it really has a 'Lost and Damned' feel to it.  If I'm going to revisit my Legion of Taurus (which would effectively be a restart as a 'new' army), I would love to go down the route where it's a horde of Mutants, Cultists, and Traitor Guard, with the elite Chaos Space Marines spearheading their attacks.

So I like the new models but one thing stood out as a major beef:

The way those CSM models are, this is going to be a kit like the Plague Marines I bet, where you get multiple parts but they go together one way.  So you'll always have a running guy or a champion with that pose when you field multiple units.  That bugs me.  I really miss the old days when you got legit multipart kits that you could build any way you wanted, including kitbashing with other kits, so that if you bought multiples they could look different.  A minor quip I suppose but one that has bugged me since I saw the new direction they go with kits where they design specific poses like action figures, rather than give you parts to design a model how you want.

Also, the Venomcrawler looks cool but if it's main schtick is helping summon daemons I don't see it getting much traction in Matched Play since I rarely see people bother with summoning since you need to put points aside for it.

I really hope that this comes with new rules other than just for the new stuff in Vigilus 2.  An updated Codex would be freaking amazing.  New CSM kit is great but unless they get a nice fat buff, they're still going to largely be bad in the actual game.  IMHO rules majorly trump models.

That's just how things are going to be from now on (or rather for the past few years already). More detailed models with cooler poses but also way more limited in how you build them unless you want to cut them apart. I personally don't really mind that to be honest and to be honest apart from the torso twisting the old models aren't that poseable either once they had both arms on their weapons.

Don't expect a buff for generic Chaos Marines though. They are too similar to Tactical Marines to get a buff on their own and it seems they want to do this with beta rules and such (Bolter Discipline for example) instead of releasing a complete rework for the unit.

I accept and welcome our new monopose overlords.

I agree that they probably won't see a heck of a lot of use as troops, but I imagine the Black Legion players will use them for Chosen. UNLESS.... Vigilus II does some funky specialist detachments to make CSM much better. (I'm thinking of what Vigilus tried to do for Intercessors).

Otherwise, unless those marine models can hold heavy weapons, I don't see a heck of a lot of practical use for them???

When I came back to the hobby a year ago I abandoned the 8 point path because I couldn't stand to build a new army of ancient looking CSM again, but with this preview I hear the call of the gods once more! I have a feeling that I will be starting a Chaos army once again in the not too distant future!
