Man, I really wish BL would do this. Who's with me?

Characters: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2018/11/07/7th-nov-blackstone-fortress-choosing-your-explorergw-homepage-post-1/

Spoiler:

BL could probably base a novel series on the exploration of (and conflicts within) the Blackstone Fortress.

Yes, there is one. I actually brought that up on the Upcoming stuff a few months ago now, with the blurb, and mentioned it again last night. It's written by Darius Hinks and the blurb is pointing towards it being a novelization, seeing how it specifically names Janus Draik as a protagonist, and how he has just found his biggest treasure vault.

So far it has only been listed on Amazon in its German edition (which isn't the first time, Amazon.de is often months ahead with its editions, like again right now, covering releases up to September 2019), which fills the same pattern as with the Shadespire novel. The release date given on that edition is early December, so expect this sometime this month, possibly tomorrow, for preorder.

Sweet cheese and crackers. I’ve just received a copy of a limited ed 40k novel I’ve got coming out this month. It’s the best looking thing I’ve EVER seen. Jaw dropping design work by BL. So, so cool. I wish I could show it but I don’t think it’s announced until the weekend.

The New Zealand store has updated already, there's a limited edition right alongside the regular hardback release! It looks indeed snazzy!

A Warhammer 40,000 novel

When he discovers a prize that could change the face of the galaxy, disgraced Rogue Trader Janus Draik recruits a team of treasure-seeking misfits to claim it. But danger lurks in the darkness…

READ IT BECAUSE
The full story behind the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress game is revealed! Join Janus Draik and his crew as they venture into the depths of the fortress and encounter all manner of deadly foes.

THE STORY
There are those in the great expanse of the galaxy that seek profit wherever it is to be found: the deal makers, the opportunists and explorers – the Rogue Traders. Granted power by an ancient charter, sanctioned by the Emperor Himself, these scoundrels, entrepeneurs and adventurers roam the galaxy in search of fortune and glory. None perhaps are as hungry for these twin-vices as Janus Draik. All but disowned by his wealthy family, regarded as a wayward son of ill repute and little potential, Draik knows he must restore his fortunes soon or his misadventures will see him destitute and discarded.

So it is then that when he finds a truly exceptional prize, one that will return him to his deserved station, Draik recruits a crew of fellow treasure seekers and sets them to the task. Draik's obsession is all-consuming, and he will risk everything to obtain his prize and its many secrets, including his life or even that of his crew…

I don’t like that LE at all. It’s totally different style to the others, would look terrible on a shelf beside Dante etc. Pretty tacky looking. Won’t be buying that. I buy all the LEs to have a collection of them not odd ones here and there that stick out like a sore thumb. Too futuristic for 40k, not old enough doesn’t fit the aesthetic.

On a plus side the story sounds fantastic.

The premise has me completely hooked, but I can’t say I’ve loved (or hated) what little I’ve read of Hinks’ work. I really hope the book delivers on the potential of the concept.

I don’t believe I’ve read anything by him. What titles have been his better ones in your experience?

I’ve read mostly his older work. He was an occasional contributor until the past year or two when he’s gotten into AOS and the Mephiston series which I haven’t checked out.

I believe I’ve read his Necromunda short, Burned, his Space Marines/demons novella, Sanctus, and his WFB novel, Warrior Priest. Both the short story and the novella were perfectly acceptable prose that showed a good knowledge of the setting, but nothing about either story really stood out to me. The dialogue and action were breezy while still being relatively interesting, and the plot to both was accessible without being overly simplistic. But the Marines in Sanctus come across as generic, without much in the way of a distinguishing identity as individuals or as representatives of their chapter. The inquisitor also feels like a wholesale copy of mid-career Eisenhorn (even has a similarly demon-resistant blade to Eisenhorn I think).

Edit: so to conclude: decent writing, not very interesting characters has been my general experience so far. If you want a sample of his current work he’s got an AOS novella in the novella collection out today and his Mephiston novels are out and about.

Hi all,

Been a looooong time and after the recharge from the BL Weekender this past week I'm eager for more books and discuss and thought I'd give forums (well, only this one) another shot.

One of the few books I didn't pick up at the Weekender is the limited ed. of Darius Hinks' Blackstone Fortress novel. Anyone read it or got the e-book? I'm trying to decide what format besides audiobook to buy it. I'd like to have read it before my official review of the box game.

Thanks and great to see you all again!

(Kenny)

Seems like it’s gonna get a little weird as things go on. The excerpt on BL seemed fun. Drain seems to be a typical Rogue trader, with emphasis on the rogue. It looks as though we’ll see more inter-species interactions outside the confines of endless war too. Scratches an itch for me personally.

I'm planning on ordering the LE and regular edition tomorrow. The novel looks cool and I actually like the LE's cover. It's futuristic and minimalist at the same time.

Welp. Went to the GW today to order the Limited Edition. It sold out last night.

Womp womp

Looks like I'll be getting the regular edition next Sunday then.

Limited ed not sold out, it’s still up there now.

Not on the GW website and the in-store websites when I checked. The bundle for the Limited Edition+ Box game was listed as "No Longer Available" and the Limited Edition was completely gone from the website when I went there yesterday.
