Just For Fun: 3K Authentic Pre-Angron War Hounds

Carnivore

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I threw this one together on a whim and thought it was worth sharing. I've always been fascinated by the precursors to the World Eaters, the War Hounds, and I thought it would be fun to try and put together a period-accurate list for what their forces would have looked like. I tried to include fluff-justification for all but the most obvious troops, so I hope that helps support my conclusions. Let me know what you think and if this list actually looks like it might perform well on the table. Cheers!

HQ

Legion Champion [145pts]

  • Artificer Armour
  • Jump Pack
  • Paragon Blade
  • Boarding Shield
"Kunnar was a War Hound and Champion of the 1st Company, killed by Angron after he assumed control of the XIIth Legion."

Praetor, Legion [185pts]

  • Artificer Armour
  • Iron Halo
  • Paragon Blade
  • Archaeotech Pistol
  • Mastercraft a Single Weapon
"Ibram Ghreer was considered to be an axeman to stand with the best of the XIIth Legion's warriors. He had proved to be a poor strategic planner, yet had managed to transform bluntness into a virtue for the XIIth Legion alongside brutality."

***NOTE: Endryd Haar could easily be substituted here as he is the exact same number of points if deemed the better option.***

Elites

Apothecarion Detachment [150pts]

  • Apothecary: Artificer Armour, Excoriator Chainaxe, Augury Scanner
  • Apothecary: Jump Pack, Excoriator Chainaxe
"No rank or role within the Legion was exempt from the expectation that they would fight as hard as the rest, however, nor was the desire to grapple with the foe and cut them down by blade-stroke discouraged if the opportunity arose, be the Space Marine in question an Apothecary or Artillerist rather than a frontline fighter."

Contemptor Dreadnought [230pts]

  • Havoc Launcher
  • Kheres Pattern Assault Cannon
  • Dreadnought Chainfist: Graviton Gun
"Juljak Nul, known as "The Storm Walker", was a Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought of the World Eaters Legion. Nul had the dual distinctions of being the first Master of Ordnance of the XIIth Legion -- later known as the War Hounds -- and being one of the first of the Legion's officers interned within a Dreadnought frame after being horribly mutilated by Slaugth murder-minds at Rangda."

Cataphractii Terminator Squad [465pts]

  • Land Raider Phobos: 2x Twin-linked Lascannon Sponsons, Armoured Ceramite, Dozer Blade
  • Terminator Sergeant: Combi-Bolter, Thunder Hammer
  • 2x Terminators: Combi-Bolters, Power Fists
  • 2x Terminators: Chainfists, Combi-Bolters
"These formations were a hybrid of tactical/close assault troops for the main part, supported by dedicated heavy assault units such as Terminators and specialised units such as Land Speeder squadrons."

Troops

Assault Squad [275pts]

  • 13x Assault Space Marines
  • 11x Chainaxes
  • 2x Power Axes
  • Assault Sergeant: Artificer Armour, Bolt Pistol, Combat Shield, Power Fist
Tactical Squad [260pts]
  • 9x Tactical Space Marines
  • Bolters
  • Additional Chainswords/Combat Blades, Nuncio-vox, Vexilla
  • Tactical Sergeant: Artificer Armour, Combi-Grenade Launcher, Power Fist
  • Rhino Armoured Carrier: Dozer Blade, Heavy Bolter
Tactical Squad [265pts]
  • 14x Tactical Space Marines, Legion
  • Bolters
  • Additional Chainswords/Combat Blades, Nuncio-vox, Vexilla
  • Tactical Sergeant: Artificer Armour, Excoriator Chainaxe, Power Fist
Heavy Support

Fire Raptor Gunship [210pts]

  • Tempest Rockets
  • Reaper Autocannon Battery
"The Fire Raptor, also known as the Fire Raptor Gunship, is a specialised variant of the Storm Eagle gunship and was first used by the Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade in the late 30th Millennium."

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought [440pts]

  • Dreadnought Drop Pod, Legion
  • Armoured Ceramite
  • Grav-Flux Bombard
  • Leviathan Siege Drill,
  • 2x Twin-Linked Volkite Calivers
  • Phosphex Discharger
"Developed in the highest secrecy not on Mars, but on Terra, the Leviathan was an alternative development of the highly successful Contemptor Dreadnought. It represents hybrid technologies, some of which it is believed date back to the Age of Strife, which rumours had it were created by the hand of the Emperor directly."

***NOTE: So this one is a bit of a stretch, but I thought it was an acceptable bit of fluff-wrangling in that its technology was heavily drawn from designs that predated the legions, so in theory one might have been given as a test to the early War Hounds.***

Spartan Assault Tank, Legion [375pts]

  • Armoured Ceramite
  • Dozer Blade
  • Flare Shield
  • 2x Quad Lascannon Sponsons
  • Twin-linked Heavy Bolter
"The Spartan Assault Tank, sometimes referred to as the Land Raider Spartan, is a heavy-assault transport that was originally used by the Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy."
