I’m all about the skulls for the super classic ultimate iconic Space Marine symbol. I have been using storm shields back when they only conferred a 4 plus in melee and you had to give up one attack. The storm shield became a 3 plus save in 5th Edition and the way things are looking now every Marine with possibly the exception of scouts and servitors should have some type of invulnerable save... not that it will really even help all that much now.

 

Note (1) This is not a rant... I still love Imperial Space Marines.

 

Note (2) Storm shields only ever confer an invulnerable save.

But your post started with "I’m all about the skulls for the super classic ultimate iconic Space Marine symbol", which Storm Shields absolutely aren't (that would be the bolter or chainsword, or maybe even power armour), then just wrote 2 sentences about how they changed in some editions, and then mention wishlisting that every Marine will have an invulnerable save. Guess I'm just confused as to what this thread is meant to be discussing...

Storm Shields never forced you to give up an attack, in 4th-7th ed they stopped you using an additional close combat weapon. In 3rd ed they only worked against a single opponent per phase and only in close combat but it was just the equipment options of the wargear list that stopped you from using one with two close combat weapons.

 

2nd ed shields had arcs of all things so you could surround and backstab shield wielders. Storm shields were a 4+ unmodifiable save and worked against shooting unlike in 3rd ed but weren't in addition to an armour save like 2nd ed refractor and conversion fields.

 

First edition originally introduced Power Shield (noted as just a synonym for Storm Shields in 2nd ed) where they were used by assault marines rather than terminators. They added +1 to the wearer's armour save like a warhammer fantasy shield which became a +2 bonus in close combat or at short range. When assault terminators were introduced they had Storm Shields with granted a 6+ unmodifiable saving throw that became 5+ in close combat, which basically meant it only worked in close combat because all terminators had a 2+ save that couldn't be modified past a 6+.

I like how post on "history of the Storm Shield" does not, in fact, contain any history, is wrong on design (most SS do not, in fact, feature skulls), rules (you not only didn't gave up one attack, but, seeing most weapons used with it were specialized weapons, most minis with SS access couldn't even modify their natural A), invulnerable saves (last time I checked vast majority of SM had no access to one, never mind all of them having it), but the funniest thing of all is the fact that the "super classic ultimate iconic Space Marine symbol" only became so very late and that mostly thanks to video games, not tabletop

A Brief History of the Storm Shield (non rules related)

The Storm Shield is a powered shield used by Space Marines, Daemonhunters and Adeptus Custodes. It is a more advanced and bulky version of the Combat Shield, providing better defense. However it is also much larger and must be grasped with the user's hand, unlike a combat shield, which allows the use of two weapons.

 

The shield is often shaped like the Crux Terminatus, although variant shield designs do exist, and is powered by a generator in the user's Power armour or Terminator Armour. The shield is effective against both melee and against ranged attacks and able to withstand the might of a lascannon or even super-heavy weaponry.

 

The Imperial Fists are noted to have a superior design of storm shield known as the Vigil Pattern which incorporate potent field generators and were first put into service during the Ullanor Crusade. Difficulties in production meant that only a few hundred had entered full service at the outset of the Horus Heresy. Rogal Dorn ordered resources to be spared in the creation of more such protective devices for the use of his Terminator units once full inter-Legion conflict was underway.

 

The Anvil Shield is an immense storm shield that Space Wolves Champion Arjac Rockfist utilises both as an impenetrable defence and as a convenient additional weapon to knock down and batter foes away from him in battle.

 

 

The Bastion Unwavering is a mighty tower shield that stands over a metre-and-a-half tall, forged of triple-hardened adamantium, and reinforced with a potent force field. It was brought to Watch Fortress Erioch by Brother Asmodel of the Angels of Redemption where it remains a point of contention between the Deathwatch and the Angels of Redemption to this day.
