Starting Raptors?

I'm looking into starting a Reasonable Marines/Raptors force, and right now, I've got 5 Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifles, and a Redemptor with Plasma Incinerator, Gatling Cannon, Icarus Missiles and Storm Bolters. If I buy/kitbash a Primaris Captain and a set of Scout Snipers, I get up to 500pts almost on the dot. I plan on buying Wake the Dead tomorrow, and with another squad of Intercessors and the Inceptors from it, I get to ~750pts. Is this a good setup for what I'm going for?

Knight Commander, welcome to the board!

There are 3 tips to build the best army you can:

1) Models that you enjoy painting and playing

2) An army that will entertain your opponent whether he wins or loses

3) An army that works as a system, rather than a collection of units, and that is aware of the mechanics of the game.

Numbers 1 and 2 are only up to you!

For number 3, the best I have figured out so far is:

- Around 40-50% of your points in Troops + HQ, with around 25-35% of your points in Troops and around 10-12% in HQ

- Rest of points in 1 to 2 unit types maximum, to figure out what kind of support your prefer to play.

For example, at 500pts, you can have a Primaris Captain, 2 x 5 Intecessors, your Dreadnought.

Your goal with that list will be to push your Intercessors on objectives ASAP, spread out on the board, while you concentrate your Captain and the Redemptor to support 1 objective held by 1 squad.

Your play will be to make it as hard as possible for your opponent to damage you. If you have to take damage, make sure it's Dreadnought then Captain, then Intercessors.

With Raven Guard tactics, make sure you play the flanks. 12'' for the Chapter Tactics means in Width as much as depth. Make sure your opponent has to split his forces to deal effectively with your Marines while you concentrate your support. It also means he will have to split up to remove your benefit, increasing his lack of support on either flank.

Mop up towards the end of game.

SNEAKY EDIT: Keep in mind you can use your Auto Rifles to Advance AWAY from the enemy. Setting up a feint spread deployment while you retreat and regroup your isolated flank to catch up with the stronger flank.

Well, I suggest getting your 500 point list together, and play a few games. Get a feel for how your units work together, and what gaps you need to fill.

What is your local gaming environment like?

What factions are played most often?

What game elements are most prevalent in your area? For example, hordes, units with <Fly>, elite armies (grey knights, custodes, deathwatch), etc.

That is how I built my collection. Also, it gets boring playing the same old list over and over, even if it is winning more often than not. When that happens, you either change it up, and try different models than you usually play, or you start an army with a new faction.

Oooh yeah: proxy. Don't commit good money on models you will never use (like me ;) ). Seriously, try to find someone who will be cool with you using anything to test the starter list. Then buy what works for you ^_^

Do it!

All the start collecting boxes, and campaign boxes are nice cheap ways of getting in

The Hellblasters and Inceptors are both great choices, don't forget the Aggressors too! Tooth and Claw is a good one of that ;)
Plus theres the Holiday Boxes about to come out too! :D

Also, think of your motor pool. Are you getting Repulsors? If not, then your Primaris are walking. Consider a Land Speeder Storm for your Scouts. Not as good as last edition, but still fast, flies, and you can shoot out of it. Great for zooming a combat squad onto the board on your third turn to grab a midfield objective.

A Thunderfire Cannon is a good buy too. Hordes are a thing, and the Tremor Shells stratagem is gold, because if they cannot fly over the unit in front of them, they are forced to either go around, or wait behind it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. So far, I've been playing around with a Primaris Captain, Intercessors, Scouts (Or Reivers, I've tried both, and they both do well, but it all depends on the opponent) and a Redemptor with some of my friends lists, and that build has done pretty well. I run into an issue sometimes where I don't have enough bodies on the table, but that's usually poor planning on my part. I think I need a more mobile unit, so I think a Land Speeder Storm might be in order.

Great advice. I could have saved a chunk of change buy taking a deep breath ans seeing what units fir my play style best.

You might consider Inceptors. Great movement and weapons range, and with T5, -1 to hit and 2+ armour (in cover), those guys are crazy resilient and will end up where they need to be. Also the bolter version is nice and cheaply available as pushfit.
