Choosing whirlwind turret

Hi all! I've always loved the whirlwind, so with my slowly growing army, I plan to add one (and a speeder or two for the Strat) to my army. I just realized that you have to choose between two choices of missile.

One has 2d6 s6 shots, which sounds pretty good to me, but the other has half as many damage 2 shots.

Which do you think is best as an all comers load-out?

I  the Whirlwind!

In my book, I prefer the original because it's ... the original. Having said that, how crazy is the idea that more missiles may cause more wounds, in turn causing more armor saves THUS possibly causing more casualties.

So ... there.

I guess it depends on what you plan to shoot at. I think I would go with the 2D6. But I am building my army to fight Orks specifically.

I've had some success with the Vengeance Launcher simply because it is an Autocannon. D2 is very nice as is the -1 to hit.

But I've considered that sometimes I just need more hits on units too. Average 7 vs 4 is quite large especially when you factor in rolling to hit.

The Castellan are pretty good all rounder.

The Vengeance is mostly geared towards infantry.

Go anti infantry if you want to be aggressive, all rounder if you want to be defensive and reactive.

Fun math for the whirlwind!

1000 points list with 1 Techmarine, 25 naked Tacticals, 6 Whirlwind with Castellan.

Numbers below are for concentrated damage versus a single unit.

Avg 6 dmg versus Marines, 3 damage versus Rhinos. High potential for variance when targeting infantry due to high volume of shots.

T3 is crazy dead in that scenario.

Same list with 5 Vengeance and 5 extra Tacticals, numbers for concentrated fire on the same target :

5 avg damage vs Tacticals, 7 damage versus Rhinos, more effectiveness vs W2 units.

List with 1 Techmarine, 25 Tacticals, 3 Castellan, 3 Vengeance.

Numbers for concentrated fire below :

Avg 6 Damage versus Marines, 6 Damage versus Rhino

Data speaks for itself : the highest reliable damage output is actually a 50-50% mix between Castellan and Vengeance!

I thought we were soon to be limited to only being able to take three of each non troop datasheet come CA18.

Not really, that's not a game rule it's a guideline for tournaments that most people have adopted for their non-tournament games.

From what I recall, whirlwind Scorpius is essentially both on the same chassis. High strength (S6AP-2), all shots do two damage, and it doubles its shots if it doesn’t move (from potential of 9 to potential of 18 shots!) Forgeworld though, so expensive, unfortunately. It also may it may not work with the stratagem, now that I think about it, but if it’s worded to use the keyword Whirlwind, it’s all good.

I’d look into it, or converting it, at least. I think anvil Industry or Kromlech has suitable Scorpius turrets.

My 0.02. Good luck with your army!
