Chapter approved, repeat information?

I started wh40k a year ago, and never purchased Chapter Approved 2017. Does anyone know GW's intention behind these books?

Specifically, can i simply purchase CA2018 and get all of the CA2017 cost updates as well, or would i still be required to buy 2017 as well to get them?

I recognize that no one here may actually know, seeing as they aren't out yet. I just didn't find anything using Google.

Thanks.

They would only list changes, so I assume both are still needed for the current points adjustments. I hope im wrong though, I'd love to not carry both.

I hope this isn't the case. With the current state of play, players are already carrying around multiple codexes for different detachments.

Hopefully they will be sensible with it, and list all the points values that are different regardless of when they came into play. But you never know!

As far as i know all the cost updates are free. CA 2017 had rules and point cost updates, but the codexes (codexi) got updated as well with the new points for free.

If it GW does the same this year it will be meaninless to buy the CA18 if all you want is the updated points. But if you want the extra missions and other rules you will have to buy CA18 ( I have do idea what carries over from last year.)

Edit: This goes for digital users.

Afaik CA2018 will include all the points changes we had in CA2017 as well if they still apply.

The rest, all the additional stuff like custom Landraider rules and how to build objectives and missions and so on won't be included in CA2018 so if you are interested in those you better get your hands on CA2017 somehow.

The proper plural of "codex" is "codices."

That's right, but considering how often GW themselves uses "Codexes" I have to assume they re-invented it. :D

Yes GW confirmed yesterday that the points changes from last year will be included/amended in CA2018 so you wont need both books.

However as sfPanzer states the Land Raider custom rules and missions etc from CA2017 won't be included.

So if you don't have CA2017 it's OK you don't need it but might want a copy anyway.

Guys, we can just take a look at the Generals Handbooks released for AoS, which are their equivalent of the Chapter Approved. These do indeed reprint the changed costs, they just put an asterisk next to the changes that were made that year.

Should be noted that AoS didn't have any points until the General's Handbook, so they had to print all points in it. CA2017 didn't have every unit and wargear listed, just those that changed.

Still, I assume that GW has the foresight to see that not including the 2017 changes in the 2018 book would be a real crap storm.

That's why the God Emperor invented Battlescribe, people! So you don't have to go through it all!

You mean that thing that is often wrong, prone to errors, has very clunky interface (especially if you play army with lots of options like DW), and has issues with timely updates, particularly if you're interested in less popular books? :whistling:

Battlescribe should be only used for books you know really well, or doubly-checked with CA, or cheating your opponent (if unknowingly) on something is virtually guaranteed...

2017 is now oop, so yes, it's a replacement, not an addition, if you don't have 2017 now (missions and rules), you'll never get it

Except I downloaded it 2 days ago for some of the Land Raider rules. So still available.

Not sure what you're talking about, my Codex's stuff is rarely wrong and the updates come within reason. The Interface is only clunky when the one who wrote that Codex datafile doesn't know what he does (which is too often the case admitedly) but that's hardly the fault of Battlescribe itself. Tho I admit the mobile version is horrible.

Anyway ... is there a better alternative out there? No? So indeed praise the God Emperor for Battlescribe until we get something better. :P

Hardly, Battlescribe may have some bugs when a new codex drops but that's natural, we strive very hard to make sure everything is not only accurate but RAW(yes I'm part of the team that maintains it).  I'm sorry that we can't have the files updated the instant the codex drops, we don't get advance copies and are all volunteers spending our own free time doing it.
