Got a game this Thursday against a BA, Deathwatch and Castellen combo. Tournament practice.

It's going to hurt I suspect.

But I want to see how the Vanguard work in this formation against this successful tournament player.

If I can survive long enough to charge some key units (or receive a charge from Mephiston etc and Strike First, for Ultramar, then there could be some surprises.

Surviving the Castellen might be a challenge.

Fortunately I have plenty of them in the form of a unit of Centurions and an Ironclad. Plus a bit of Mortal Wounds trickery from Tigurius and the Ironclad.

My opponent will know this so I expect the Castellen to fire at the Centurions first... it all remains to be seen how it'll go.

Very interesting.

I got the Castellen wrong - it was a Knight Crusader.

Anyway here's the quick lowdown.

Deployment sucked. It was Spearhead Assault which mean long table edge. Mission was Supply Drop.

I was too aggressive. Against the amount of Storm Bolters and the distance to cover to get to grips, I actually should have held my forces back.

The mission meant I scored all the points and killed off the forward elements that held an objective so if I'd hung back behind cover I'd have forced my opponent to come to the objective and then I could have charged etc.

As it was, only fools rush in and my Vanguard got cut to ribbons.

Combined with some hideous dice rolling, I lost on turn 5 by about 5 VPs. (5 Storm Bolters actually killed 8 Vanguard at one point)

If I hadn't played the way I did, my opponent pointed out I'd have likely won.

It's all good though. I enjoyed what I did do competitively and learnt so much with the army. The main trick is holding back and being patient. When you invest CPs into an army you can get blinded by the investment and just want to use it as soon as possible which is actually a false principle in some cases.

Play the mission better and not the opponent's game plan!

I took the banner of the Emperor Ascendant over McCragge Inviolate because I've had a terrible time getting the banner to be by my VV and I figure planting him by the Centurions with the Apothecary is a better option.

I think it's a credible list, though I have a few reservations about the Land Raider just down to cost effectiveness. I think it could work though.

My main question is would you consider the Standard of Maccragge Inviolate alongside the Vanguard squad now they're in the transport?

Overall I like what you've done and only would change some minor things due to personal preference - like a Missile Launcher on Ven Dread.

Landraider is for the Centurions and characters. All VV are jump pack.

I was thinking of having a terminator squad instead of the landraider. While the landraider can be tied up in assault, the terminators can give back and fall back if needed and still get to shoot.

The land raider is helpful for turn 1 protection plus less total drops if want to go first.

That's what it's there for, though losing Bolter Discipline makes the crusader less desirable. It's 16 man capacity is good though.

I do have a question for others following the thread. Has anyone found a use for the Sternguard vets in the Victrix detachment?

All the stratagems are assault based, so no real incentive to bring them over Vanguard vets.

I'm not really that enthused about Sternguard in a Victrix Guard Detachment but they are fairly good on the table jumping out of a Rhino to attack infantry.

If it's a choice (because of points) between Sternguard and Vanguard, then it's Vanguard all the way. In fact, their position can be surplus to requirements so they can be the 1st unit to be dropped for something else.

The Centurions certainly enjoy getting within 24" if the opponent is hanging back so that's not a bad shout.

Perspective and preference can be everything. The specialized detachment offers them nothing of consequence that I'll agree too.

But sterguard can fight like demi god and strike first for ultramar, not that you'd want to. Sterguard can also can utilize hell fire shell, flak missile; scions of guilliman and masterful marksman ship, honour the chapter.

With a banner near by they could attack three time and attack if downed.

I use them as a cheap source of -ap2 fire, and they can help soften up critical targets before a vanguard charge against as many units as I can run down. I find them to be helpful in alot of situations.

I'm drawing the line at honour guard though.

Oh don't get me wrong; Sternguard have been a staple in my lists since 8th Dropped. Alongside a Captain they can do some decent assault potential.

I just find points a critical resource what with my preference for some ranged anti tank, 2× Vanguard squads and Centurions it's just hard to squeeze the points in for Sternguard. In a Victrix Guard Detachment I find that the choice between losing a Vanguard squad for Sternguard and leaving the Sternguard at home and keeping 2 Vanguard squads, that's where I'll go.

Of course lists vary between folk.

Oh I meant nothing by it. We know your points and advice is sound given the detachment capabilities and your battle reports with the smashing of knights with fists of retribution.

The points can be difficult to juggle, I'm looking another vanguard almost identical to the one you operate. It's finding a fit though.

Given marines don't really get many premium assault units it foolish not to press that leverage where possible.
