Scouts Striking from the Shadows

Has anyone tried deploying a big unit of scouts in terrain, then using STFS to move them 9" towards the enemy? I'm thinking particularly if you know you have first turn it makes a nice first turn charge or a move block if there is something big and mean coming at you. Sadly scouts are not really an effective combat unit but it's something I might try.

Just a thought.

Infiltrate your Scouts placing them first in your deployment order where they push your opponent as far back as possible if it’s a melee opponent then SftS with them and fade back to deny charges. Or versus a short opponent fade behind terrain or into cover or forward if possible improving an opportunity for a first turn assault.

Well if it isn’t they’ll FAQ us again. Entendre inteneded ... and they’ll limit it to our own DZ. I hope not though because more I look at it, while it’s not as nice as deploying Aggressors and Hellblasters as before, it looks like it’s going to have some useful shenanigans that will

still have the fill of a hit run hit from the shadow feel a reasonable marine should have.

I dont think you can though?

It would be one or the other.

Hrmm actually with the new rule I guess you could ... interesting ...

Im not sure that's the intent though?

I mean, can you? Yes.

Whats it do for you effectively? Not-much.

The re-written SFTS from the Big FAQ Reads:

"‘Use this Stratagem when you set up a Raven Guard Infantry unit from your army during deployment. At the start of the first battle round but before the first turn begins, you can move that unit up to 9". It cannot end this move within 9" of any enemy models. If both players have units that can move before the first turn begins, the player who is taking the first turn moves their units first.’"

Scouts can deploy anywhere that is 9" away from bad guys and 9" away from their DZ.

All SFTS on a Scout Squad would accomplish is to get closer towards their DZ but still has to pay heed to the bad guys clause.

Best case scenario? Using scouts to yoink an objective away from an opponent in their DZ, where the opponent has left it unguarded, or guarded by a non-Obsec unit. I suppose you could pick up Domination turn one through this "exploit"

Its still mostly retarded and useless though :biggrin.:

  • 4 weeks later...

I  would say don't lose that hope, but to watch for opportunity.

With Infiltrate, SftS and with a go 1st turn move I could see a real possibility to be charging the Imperial 32 Hoes' on the first turn. I'll take Scouts in hth with Guardsmen.

SftS isn't a click move anymore, but still useful if you keep your eyes open and look deeper into the games machinations.

In a similar vein, how about SftS on Reivers with grapnel launchers and bolt carbines?

My FLGS has some juicy, tall terrain. I'd think it would be interesting if you could end up on top of that terrain on turn one, instead of paying for grav chutes and waiting until turn two.
