15 Metal Wulfen and a dream

So I collected 13th Company back in 3rd, till my army was stolen from my car while moving. :(

Fast forward to now, and I've still got the Eye of Terror book, and 15 unpainted 3rd Edition metal Wulfen. Thinking I could convert them to have 3 5 man THSS squads as a starting base for my army.

I've got some old chaos marine sprues, so one box of Space Wolves can mix to make approximately 20 13th Company 1/2 Wolf, 1/2 Chaos, just like the old days!

Now,things have changed quite a bit. Running an all footslogging army following the old restrictions from Eye of Terror is too limiting for me.

Could the fluff handle my Halfsies Marines riding in Rhinos, flying Land Speeders, or Primaris in general? Or would it be too heretical to 'still' use tainted equipment once reunited with the chapter?

Honestly my Space Wolves started as 13th Company so yes my army includes chaos backpacks, horned helmets, brass-edged legs and so forth and also has ten of those old metal wulfen. I simply like that the helmets and details give my wolves a more fantasy norse appearance over the fur and rune heavy modern plastic kits and I run my Wulfen as Blood Angels Death Company just with a SW paint-scheme. That way they are a crazy assault unit that still wears power armor.

I started a full 3rd ed style 13th Company army about 6 years ago amidst all of my other projects. Your metal Wulfen will absolutely work as Wuflen, I have 15 of the new ones and I've got them in two squads (7 and 8 models) so they can absorb a little more fire.  I had looked for metal Wulfen on eBay and the prices were eye-watering so I had started converting truescale power armor models with Fantasy zombie hands when the plastic Wulfen dropped.  I wasn't totally happy with their look - they were a bit too werewolf for my tastes - but they're still big and scary looking.

I have no vehicles in my army, just a ton of Grey Slayers, TWC without the riders (greenstuffed where the saddle sits), Wuflen, and Fenrisian wolves to run forward while 3 Long Fang packs shoot anything that moves.  I still haven't tried the army in 8th because of all the other things I'm working on but that's a goal this winter. I genuinely don't think footslogging armies are at that huge a disadvantage if you bring enough bodies. TWC and Wulfen can get across a board pretty quickly and Long Fangs can split fire any way they like to deal with threats.

In the old 13th Company list Rune Priests had a teleport spell so I considered modeling a big teleport rift to represent a drop pod to put a squad in the backfield.  Those starting a 13th Company army now have the huge advantage of plastic MK3 and MK4 armor to mix and match with Chaos armor for a true preheresy look.

Thank you! Im glad to hear others still have that good old Half Heretical Marines. I'm definitely feeling the Long Fangs this edition, gonna have to bust out my metal Lascannon and Plasma Cannon...

I'm considering 'light vehicles' for the army, Landspeeders, Rhinos, and Whirlwinds, primarily. I'ld like some more dynamic units on the field than just boots on the ground. Plus, the base of my army is those 15 glorious old Wulfen, so I'm going to want fast movers to range ahead of the Wulfen Packs. Are Swift/Sky Claws still any good.

Will update here with pics of my collection, got most of the old metal SW characters too.

I did no vehicles in my army to follow the old fluff, I did add just a couple of terminators with mixed in Chaos armor panels but I use the extra plastic Wulfen bits to show far they’ve fallen to the Canis Helix.

Sadly the SW army has lost a ton of flavor since the 5th edition Phil Kelly codex so things like Mark of the Wulfen for D6 attacks on the squad leaders are lost, I was modeling them to look much more feral and now it’s kinda wasted.

Footsloggers can work in 8th from what people have told me and what I’ve seen on tables at my store. I’ll bust open my case to post some pics, my table is full of Adeptus Titanicus stuff at the moment but I really want to finish my 13th Co, Deathwing, and Lizardmen.

For a while I ran a very infantry heavy list as well. 60 Gray Hunters and 30 Blood Claws can give opponents a tough time trying to kill them all before they reach CC. It did work better than I expected.

Today though we do have some options, Fenrisian Wolves and Thunderwolves are both potent units, especially run alongside certain characters and Wulfen. I don't think Skyclaws are all that good but Swiftclaw Bikers aren't terrible, their speed, twin bolters and higher toughness all gives them some utility.

I threw up a little seeing those WFB wolves. I'd hated them for so long.

Love that supreme command though! I really want to try "renovating" that iron priest and im actually working on converting the new grimnar to pay tribute to the old model.

I'm strongly considering turning my old marines into Veteran Wolf Guard, maybe with jump packs. Primaris troops seem fun and reliable, and the future of marines.

I think it would be cool to have a 10 man WG with jump packs packing SS and Chainsword to 'escort' my Wolf lord...

Cons-

Slow, Dependant upon Storm Caller and - 1 to hit Strat, no ranged anti tank, no units to tank heavy fire, every loss Hurts
