Damn, he (or the basic design process) is working !5! Years ahead of releases.
And I agree, Brother Sgt Arkley, it's amazing to listen to him.

Watching it now, enjoying it so far but I wish they had started this way earlier as the person whose insights I'd love to have heard would have been Alan Bligh. They would have had to have several parts but the content would have been worth it.

Yeah the insight Jes gives over how they produce a model range, the lead time required, etc. was all good stuff.

Thanks for the link. I’ve been waiting to see GW puttingnthemselves out there like this.

.... so .... the man who has a strong interest in Eldar is a driving force in how (Primaris) Marines are evolving .... Not sure I like the sound of that.

Dude Jes Goodwin designed Space Marines from the ground up, probably before you were born, what are you even talking about? Jes created space marines.

It was a great interview. I’ve been pouring over the old White Dwarf that Wade mentioned at the end, with some space wolves that Jes kitbashed for the 3rd edition release. (I would upload photos of the article if posting pictures wasn’t so difficult here from my phone.) Back when they first released the space wolves upgrade sprue which was the only type of accessories for space marines for so many years. Really warms my heart that they even mentioned it.

Really great to hear Jes speak. He may have finally sold me on the Primaris. My main gripe is that there are no Assault arms available, but herr-derr now I realise that they are in the Reivers box.

So good. Can’t tell you how great that interview was. What a dude. I’m going to buy a knight.

Aye, Jes Goodwin was the creative force behind the development of Space Marines after 1st Edition. Some groundwork was there but a lot of the work done is his or influenced by his work.

I do find it hilarious that some people were saying the size of newer marine stuff looks great next to regular humans like Cadians, and then GW upsized the humans so they are the same height as marines again

Most interesting part of this was to see him dismissive of the 'real world historical culture IN SPACE' element of the setting.

Maximum of 5 years. Some models will be more like 2 years while others might be based on concept sketches going back much longer but only be a few years from opening up the CAD program to release.

I used to love to see the behind the scenes photos of the W.I.P space marines that Juan Diaz was creating. Guys like the Black Templar Sword Brethren were just plastic tacticals that Juan converted up and sculpted cloaks and details for.

I thought that was absolutely genius. Jes created the blue print, the basic framework and made it available in plastic for everybody. I used to love seeing what people could do with them.

It’s interesting that they touched on so many points that are personal gripes for me. The loss of all the heritage is probably the strangest side effect of the primaris issue. If they had just updated the space marine tactical kit I don’t think anyone would have battered an eyelid.

I’ll need to think more about it. He literally said that the arms, heads and shoulder pads are all the same size, but I don’t feel it to be the case. However slight, there is a disconnect.

Anyway I need to watch the interview again tomorrow and think about it some more

Kitbashing Space Marines was for me at least, the backbone of the entire hobby and by extension these here hallowed halls aswell.

I really wish they would just put everything back to rights so we could all get back to business. Things were way simpler when it was just Tacticals, Assault, CSM, and the Berserkers.

The entire space marine range is in an absolute shambles. We’ve got old marines, Horus Heresy marines, old chaos marines, new push fits, Japan only, Primaris, like it seems GW are just flailing wilding in all directions at once trying to get the right mix.

I just want to grab them and slap them. ‘Yo, finish one thing before doing the next. Where are the plastic MkIII despoilers? Where are the plastic MKII?

Stop making things bigger.

Anyway, cheers!

That was really good, very interesting.

Skulls are the emperors face, of course, makes sense!

I liked the insight into how primaris will develop. He basically said although they look new and clean now cause all their gear is new, as time goes on they will start to have more armour decoration and variant parts like normal space marines.  That is a good thing imo, they need the variation.

I did find it odd though he said the arms are the same size, they demonstrably aren't!

I do agree with BrotherJim on finishing something before they started.  They really should have finished the older kit updates to the standard marine infantry units before starting primaris.  They weren't far off being finished!

What an incredible listen. Goodwin has such a way of not only designing, but explaining his though process behind everything. I love the way he clearly thinks out the depth of history in 40K - like how Mars has probably been terraformed several times, with most of those being forgotten. It's little bits like that which give 40K a sense of verisimilitude that's rarely been equalled.

...I also love how they apparently can't get Jes to say "Aeldari" or "Drukhari." Just "Eldar" and "Dark Eldar," as it should be. Warms my heart.

That particular spread is a special one for me, too. There's a Space Wolf with a Power Fist in there, and the accompanying call-out explained how by just tilting the torso a bit and letting the fist "hang" in a particular way, you got an immediate visual suggestion of its weight. Obvious stuff, I guess, but it's one of the earliest hobby lessons I ever had, and remains one of the most important.

Most interesting part of this was to see him dismissive of the 'real world historical culture IN SPACE' element of the setting.

Definitely. The idea that Marine Chapters and other 40K factions are more archetypical than historical, and should take inspiration from lots of different cultures rather than just scraping into a singular niche, is one I've been a big fan of since forever.

While I think that idea makes sense in the abstract, the problem is that the kits have already been designed.  We have intercessors and hellblasters that all look the exact same.  Same chest eagles, same lack of other iconography.  So unless GW branches out into primaris veteran sternguard/vanguard equivalents with more variation/decoration, then i'm not sure where the variation will come from.

Edit: spelling
