Thinking about getting back into GK - Help Required!

Hi guys.

I had a nice GK army (around 4000pts) but had to sell them when I was made redundant about 5 years ago.

Have always loved the play style, the lore and the models.

I am thinking of starting up with GK again and have the Codex.

The sort of force I am looking for centres around 3*5 Strike Squads (Double Falchions) in a Crusader, Draigo or Voldus, a Librarian, 3 NDH Paladins, Apothecary and Paladin Ancient. Backed up by 2 Venerable Dreads with Lascannon.

Luckily, I have the Crusader, Venerable Dreads and a Termie Librarian already, so expenditure would not have to be massive.

Where to go from here? Dreadknights; Are they any good this edition?

Sounds like a perfectly fluffy army with lots of decent choices as far as goes for Grey Knights. Just be prepared to be rather underwhelmed by Landraider since they want to get close as transports but the enemy can easily disable their weapons by charging them with chaff or something "useless" like Rhinos etc.

As the others have said NDK are okay-ish but the Grand Master NDK is clearly better in every regard so just go with that one instead. It also offers a nice opportunity to make him look a bit more fancy than a regular NDK would look.

Personally, I play by my unofficial 'Rule of Two', which says that if you have a heavy hitting unit, have two of that if at all possible - your opponent won't have one priority target and you won't have one unit that's a priority target for your opponent and the only one of its kind in your force.

That's why I've ordered two Ironclad Dreadnoughts and why, if I was you, I'd take another NDH Paladin Squad and maybe swap one Hammer in each for a Halberd to have the first lost model hurt less.

With the CA changes, it should work points-wise.

Other than that, it's a list that does all the things I want mine to do as well, and probably better :biggrin.:

Land raiders aren't very good in this edition, if you get charged de tank is useless for the rest of the game.

power armour squads have also been hit hard so I would go full termis and dreadfulknights

That's like saying, "My foot hurts, please take off my leg." lmao

Termis have it even worse than Power Armour units. Strike Squads are almost fine for their points but Terminator Squads are seriously overcosted.

They are indeed - they've got half the firepower of a Strike Squad and only make up for that by degrading less severely compared to their full strength output.

So a Terminator Squad alone is basically a slower Strike Squad with half the damage output. They can deepstrike, you say?

Interceptor Squads, I say - because nobody is dumb enough to take GK troop choices to fill a Battalion for the CP.

Umm... yes, I AM painting a third MSU Strike Squad to fill a Battalion for the CP, why are you asking? :ermm::whistling:

But PA Squads buy me both more wounds and more guns for the points. Which is a shame, I'd love an all Terminator force.

Also, there's the Paladins, who are settled comfortably in between PA and Terminator troops in terms of wounds and output per point. If I want/ you want to go for any Terminators, using a Paladin Squad [Edit: TWO Paladin Squads] would the way to do it.

Basically everything in a GK army can deep strike, even Strike Squads. ;)

And yes Paladins Squads are definitely better than Terminator Squads, but at this point you could almost just go with more characters instead (seriously, the Terminator Apothecary with hammer my GK buddy uses did a lot of the heavy lifting in his games lol). However they are still good enough to take one or two units for less competetive matches so that's why I didn't say anything about it to OP. He's just beginning and should use what he likes. It's just that regular Terminators are so overcosted and just don't have a place between Strike Squads and Paladin Squads that it would be unfair to tell him he should go with those. ^^

8th relies in hordes that pump out tens of low ap shots 2+ saves can deal with that, 3+ like you, can't

8th doesn't "rely" on hordes. Hordes are good but there are plenty of other weapons in every list that can ruin the day of Terminators. Best example would be Plasma for obvious reasons.

You don't counter hordes with even more elite units. Only hordes counter hordes at the moment.

If only everything could deep strike it would add more possibilities (purifiers, or purgation squads, or dreds. But you can gate everything so there is that).

If only there was no restriction on Gate...

I like the idea of a Terminator force, it's what I'm leaning towards. I got 10 already, and I'm thinking I'm going to convert some cataphractii into either chaos world eater terminators or Paladins/Apothecaries/Ancients for my Greyknights. To more visually set them apart.
