Idaho is going back to tournaments!

Hmm.

Unfortunately I hadn't built the 2nd Vanguard squad so my army really lacked the core of its draw.

In addition, as I never had the models available right now, I didn't have a 2nd Dreadnought (as I didn't want a counts as for James since he hasn't played in ages) and ended up with quite a different list than I intended.

As such I didn't get much out of the Victrix Guard. The Captain with Solider's Blade solo'd a full unit of Hellblasters though (well 5 Intercessors and 5 Hellblasters in a unit) thanks to Honour the Chapter.

The core of the army fought well. As suspected, the Tacticals suffer opportunist shots most of the time since everything else usually is a priority. This meant there was always a plasma dude or Sergeant around to be a pain in the rear.

The Devastators were disappointing. I just kept fluffing their rolls. Every volley just rolled poorly to hit and wound.

I took a Predator and Whirlwind as stand ins and the Predator did okay but both of these units won't be finding their ways into my list.

***

Overall I lost to a solid tournament list but with an extremely unpolished list. We played Narrow the Search and I made a capital error - instead of biding my time and scoring the points I rushed forward too soon and ended up being counter attacked rather solidly.

Had I hung back I would have still been the one to score the early VPs and as the mission went on my opponent would have needed to approach which would have resulted in ME doing the counter attacking and likely winning fairly convincingly.

These new missions can catch you out and I'm rusty.

So onwards to assemble the Vanguard. 10 more would have been decisive I feel.

Got something radical coming (for me anyway):

Captain - The Soldier's Blade, Plasma Pistol and Jump Pack, Warden of Ultramar

Ironclad Dreadnought - Hurricane Bolters, Chainfist, Melta gun and Assault Launchers.

Vanguard squad - 5× Storm Shields and Chainswords, 5× Bolt pistol and Power Fists.

Vanguard squad - 4× Dual Lightning Claws, 3× Storm Shields and Chainswords, 3× Dual Chainswords.

Vanguard Detachment

Techmarine - Bolter and Chainsword

Contemptor - Kheres assault cannon

Dreadnought - Twin linked Lascannon and missile Launcher

Dreadnought - Twin linked Lascannon and missile Launcher

Battalion

Librarian - Force Staff and Bolt Pistol, Might of Heroes and Null Zone

Lieutenant - Mastercrafted Bolter and Chainsword

Tactical squad ×5 - Combi plasma and Plasma gun

Tactical squad ×5 - Combi plasma and Plasma gun

Tactical squad ×5 - Combi plasma and Plasma gun

Centurions ×3 - Hurricane Bolters and Heavy Bolters

Really happy with the list and Beta Bolters.

The Centurions aren't an easy target since I have the Contemptor/Ironclad tag team and Vanguard to shoot at.

Definitely got Jump Pack on the Vanguard sorry.

I was tempted by the Sternguard but for the price of them plus the Rhino I got the Centurions.

Lately the Sternguard have been quite vulnerable and not so effective for me.

And I wanted to roll 54 dice for 1 unit for once!

Really love the list! Tho if it were me, I'd drop 1 Tac Squad for a bare bones Scout Squad. That would let you make your Librarian into Tiggy. Then you'd have 5pts to play with. Which I would go power axe on the Techmarine.

Oh not allowed to use Tigurius at the tournament in June I have planned. He's count as since I hate the current model and the organisers said neigh.

But if I get an opportunity to use Tigurius counts as then I would totally do that. ;)

That sucks! I totally do the same, counts as. His model isn't great.

Yeah but I can't stand the model!

I might buy him, but my collection is mostly based upon what I like with a smattering of what performs well.

Who knows, maybe I'll buy him but I can't guarantee it'll be a priority.

I agree. I sold my painted one and use a counts as as well. I ant believe they are that inflexible about it. I have an original metal one but ugh I don’t want to paint it. If anyone became Primaris first I wish it was him.

  • 2 weeks later...

Amendments consolidated into the list.

Notably the replacement of the Librarian for Tigurius. He makes the list so much stronger, especially alongside the Captain and his Sanctic Halo.

Scouts finally received their head swap so I added them and saved the points for the changes.

++ Battalion Detachment +5CP ++

**Chapter Selection**: Ultramarines

+ HQ +

Chief Librarian Tigurius: 2) Might of Heroes, 3) Psychic Scourge, 6) Null Zone

Lieutenant Adept of the Codex, Chainsword, Master-crafted boltgun, Warlord

+ Troops +

Scout Squad - ×5 Sniper rifles

Tactical Squad 5x Space Marine, Combi-plasma, Heavy bolter

Tactical Squad 5x Space Marine, Combi-plasma, Heavy bolter

++ Vanguard Detachment ++

**Chapter Selection**: Ultramarines

Specialist Detachment [-1CP]: Victrix Guard

+ HQ +

Captain: Jump Pack, Plasma pistol, Relic blade, Stratagem: Field Commander, The Sanctic Halo, Warden of Ultramar

+ Elites +

Ironclad Dreadnought: Dreadnought chainfist, Hurricane bolter, Ironclad Assault Launchers, Meltagun

Vanguard Veteran Squad: Jump Packs, 4× Dual Lightning Claws, 3× Dual Chainswords, 3× Chainsword and Storm Shield.

Dreadnought: Missile launcher, Twin lascannon

Dreadnought: Missile launcher, Twin lascannon

++ Total: 1748 ++

Obviously those 2pts will likely go into another Storm Shield somewhere. It's not essential right now to worry about it!

Regarding the List...

...It's getting a trial by fire tonight. A good friend of mine is taking a very strong GT list and I'm in for a tough ride taking a balanced list to this fight. That's just the way it is when you play themes and taking units you like but I hope to make it work.

His list is approximately as follows:

- Knight Gallant

- 2× Armiger Helverins

- Deathwatch Captain

- Deathwatch Master

- Obligatory Deathwatch Veterans with Storm Shields, Storm Bolters and Terminator to tank wounds.

- 2× 5 Intercessors

- 2× Dreads with Twin linked Lascannon and missile Launcher.

I'm not too scared of the Gallant if I'm honest. It's getting picked off by the Helverins and massed 2+ wounds. Very offensive list but not very mobile outside the Gallant.

***

Tigurius Psychic powers... Might of Heroes is an obvious choice due to the way it keeps a tough model alive. A T9 Ironclad or T8 Contemptor will be very annoying, especially with any minuses to hit.

Null Zone just in case. It's better to have it and not use than not at all. It'll help to deal with any Shield Captains or other monstrosities that try and tank wounds on Invulnerable saves.

Psychic Scourge... I like it. We get to single out models and likely inflict Mortal Wounds on them. It grants my army another Mortal Wounds generator too.

But should I swap it out? I quite like the power but with Vanguard and a Captain, plus an Ironclad marching up the table, perhaps Veil of Time does have some place?

I'm very curious about the Iron Clad.

personally I'm bummed about the Deathwatch are now the FotM for soup. I guess it's better than when it was me and 10 other people in that forum...lol The Deathwatch can tank you hard, and be careful. I think Poison Rounds catch everyone off guard. It won't be las/melta/plasma that drops your infantry. It will likely be a plethora of stormbolter wounds.

Does he make the Gallant his Warlord? Just be aware of T1 assaults from it (Full Tilt). :) If he chooses the 5++ then Nullzone will be very useful.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes. That's a solid list he's got too.

I kinda want a turn 1 assault from it so I can krump it early with a combined charge of Warden of Ultramar and the Vanguard and maybe a surviving Dread. The only question is who will be the unlucky candidate for it... :)

It won't be Warlord but I think his Watch Master is.

Thanks I'll be aware of the death by a thousand Bolters.

Part the reason I got Psychic Scourge so I can put extra Mortal Wounds in there.

I know he'll be scared of the Centurions so I actually kinda don't mind if he shoots them first.

I'll report the results up. I'll try for a battle report in fact.
