The Brotherhood of the Crimson Dawn - a Vth Legion plog

Hello there! I’m getting myself into gear after a prolonged absence from the Heresy due to painting fatigue. I’ve been toying with who to paint, and I plumped in the end for the Vth Legion White Scars. Chris Wraight is my favourite BL author, I’ve always enjoyed their fluff and I’m a big fan of East Asian culture, so seemed a no-brained. The only stumbling block? White. I’ve never been a fan of painting bright colours, but felt I needed to give it a real good showing.

I’m gonna come up with some fluff and a proper army list once Malevolance hits, so thought I’d start with some basics. Grabbed a plastic rhino and a set of the gorgeous Forge World doors; with white being a difficult colour, I decided that painting larger surfaces first might be best so I could decide beforehand if this would make me rip my hair out (well, if I had any).

Gone for my usual weathering approach but toned it and the powders down a bit. Need to work a bit more on the bottom of the tank but I’m fairly happy with this, plus a tester for a tactical marine (oh, where art thou, plastic Mk II marines?).

Any cc is always appreciated! I’ll be slowly adding a few bits over the holidays, might add in some Dark Angels too (I tend to have a fast and loose approach to what and when I paint).

Backstory? Well, it’s going to be a mostly Terran company to start with, with a Chogorian proper taking over to try and exert some of the Proper ways over them.

So to start with, I’m not going very heavy on the Jetbikes. Maybe a squad or two of 3/6. Probably as the Heavy Support options there’ll be Mk III marines in Rhinos as troops, or Ive got 30 Assault Marines so far if I fancy something fast moving on foot (also snagged a pack of Jump Pack Destroyers). There will definitely be a Contemptor or two in there too. I’ve got a couple of Laser Destroyer Vindicators, some Cataphractii (will be painted black and white for sure), 2 Quad Mortars and a couple of the Option 1 Land Speeders. I’d have dearly loved some Mk II marines but that is sadly not an option at present.

I haven’t really given it masses of thought as I’ve been waiting (rather impatiently, it might be said) for my copy of Malevolance to turn up. Seeing as that’s now been spotted in the wilderness, I can start to give some more thought to the fluff.

In the meantime, I’ve started building up the Jump Infantry. 13 Assault Marines and 5 Destroyers built so far, just waiting on some Scars lads to finish them off. I’m hoping a Transfer sheet isn’t too long on the horizon.

I think the weathering balance is just right; gritty enough for heresy but not losing the 'white' overall look.

Very interested to see this take off :)

My only gripe is the mould lines on the rhino exhausts! sorry to be that guy, but it draws my eye on an otherwise great looking tank.

Mind sharing your way of painting white and weathering? I usually weather but dont know if i should do it on my scars...

Looking forward to see more!

Have to say for someone who doesn't like painting white you've done a bloody good job of it! Think the weathering level is just right - looks like splinters of wood and stone chips have marked their armour as they've jumped out of Rhinos at speed!

Like the top-knots on the marines too - definitely feels characterful for the White Scars and fits their cultural background.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks for the feedback, gang! Sorry for the hiatus, I’ve had a lot on with work of late. Was waiting as well to see what Malevolance brought too.

Anyways, I found a lovely conversion of Qin Xa on the ‘Gram, and thought it’d be a nice basis for a Praetor of my own. He’s just gonna be a normal Khan (mainly as Qin Xa is in Tartaros armour), but he’s gonna be the head of my own Brotherhood. The plan is for a mostly Terran force of Scars, one that has had a Chogorian placed at its head with a mind for siege warfare (hence the Mk III and the eventual plan for Terminators, Assault Marines, Vindicator Laser Destroyers, Sicarans, Contemptors etc). I’ll come up with a name for him and a touch more background at some point.

I was researching east/south Asian weaponry, and found that the Deathsworn axe heads were very much of a similar style, so I’ve given him one of those instead of two of the Deathwatch swords.

I’m away for a long weekend so I’ll be taking him away to paint and to get onto some more Tacticals. Speaking of....for those who have asked how I paint my Scars:

Prime white.

Basecoat Vallejo White and Aged Bone (just a few drops of the bone to give a nice ivory colour).

Basecoat all your other colours.

Wash your metals and highlight them, and any other non-white colours.

Weathering: I use a black/brown mix with a small bit of sponge from an old blister pack on the tanks edges, and then use a brush to just paint a few streaks etc. Then I add a few little drops of silver within the black/brown for paint chips.

Gloss varnish the mini after applying transfers (although still waiting for those, Forge World...).

Apply a liberal coat of brown Panel Liner oil in the recesses of the mini, don’t worry if this goes everywhere.

Give it 15/20 mins to dry, and then dip a cotton bud into some non-odour white spirits. Drag the bad across the armour, leaving he oil only in the recesses. Doing this gives a nice slightly grimy sheen to the mini.

Let it dry, then give the white armour a slightly patchy dab with an old brush in various places.

Give it a Matt varnish spray and you’re sorted!

I should say my lovely phone camera makes the minis look whiter than they actually are, they’ve actually got a more ivory tint to them. The scheme might sound fiddly but it’s actually really simple and effective.

Hope that helps! Any feedback is always welcome too.

Interesting that you apply the gloss varnish after the decals - I find that if you apply a little before applying the decals you'll find it helps with decal silvering (which you get sometimes even with good quality decals). Although the FW Heresy decals I've found to be pretty good, certainly a lot thinner than some of GW's earlier efforts.

Thanks for the comments, gang, much appreciated!

@sockwithaticket - I had thought about that, but I was going more for a sort of ‘superhero pose’ or such, as opposed to being in the midst of action.

So, I’ve been away for a long weekend, brought a few paints with me and did a quick and dirty paint job on my Khan. Not the most flattering photo, but that’s the joys of being in a caravan ha.

I’m very much looking forward to getting back home on Tuesday, and picking up the new FW WS Cataphractii Praetor and Contemptor Dreadnought from the post office.

@Johanhgg - cheers! That’s right, I use AK Interactive Sand and Desert camouflage Panel Liner for this.

Thanks for the answer! Are you covering the model in the wash or focusing in the recesses? Sorry for spamming questions but your scars is exactly what i want for my scars :)

Joahnhgg - sorry for the slow response, real life getting in the way of hobby! Yeah I mostly focus on the recesses but let a little splash in the armour. After wiping it off the main plates with the white spirits, it leaves a nice grimy finish to the armour.

Anyhoo, I’m back with a vengeance now work has slowed down. I’ve got the new Cataphractii Praetor and Contemptor built and primed. But I got a mate to snag me a box of the Ebon Leshig at Warhammer Fest and I’m proper excited for them as I can paint black till the cows come home.

Got tomorrow off work and am staying up till 2am to watch the GoT simulcast so am determined to get these built, primed and get the ball rolling on painting them.
