Of pale skin and paler souls - Aeternus's Carcharodons

Something stirs in the deeps...

After a long break decided to start up my contributions on the BnC again in earnest, and with such comes the first of two project logs. Having picked up a selection of the space marine heroes models with some friends we've all decided to paint them up as a new army kill-team, and, after some consideration (and in no small part due to what I had bitswise) I've decided mine'll be clad in the myriad greys of the Carcharodons, savage warriors roaming the edges of the Imperium.

While for the foreseeable future there will only be these five marines, at the end of the squad depending on how I feel about them I might slowly continue to dabble in this worryingly loyalist project :P

For now here's the pics of how the first of the squad is coming along. I'm going to be heavily drawing on Malchy's carcharodons for inspiration, as they are a truly beautiful army, though I'm hoping I'll be able to give my squad their own character.

His legs are finished except for the holster and purity seal. Comments and criticism welcome, the grey has come out darker than probably intended tho still think it works well, though I might try to have lighter plates on some of the next marines in places for a sharky mix of light grey, this grey, black and white. Planning on using red as the company colour, undecided on whether to do the pistol plating in red or black.

Shoal-sergeant Manasu of fourth company, third Nomad-predation fleet of the Carcharodons.

Thank you for the interest :)

I missed the question regarding the pistol plating the first time round. I'd suggest black as there are already enough red elements on the model, in my opinion.

Agreed. Missed the question as well, but black or possibly the lighter grey would work well -- the red is plenty as is.

Cheers for the interest Frater! Well chuffed with how much ya like Manasu so far :biggrin.:

Unfortunately am away from home for the past couple days so no more immediate progress to report, but grabbed a pic of the rest of the squad. They've been through some minor conversion work, with two given MkV helms, a couple of cc weapons added, and decided to make one of them a techmarine-in-training, one of the specialists in the squad. Had done the skin colours few days back when I was having a shot at Calgar, before I realised how pale the carcharodons are, so they're gonna have to go through some repainting :tongue.: What do people find works for really pale skin? Was thinking of trying a rakarth/palllid wych/white layers with a purple wash thrown in but if anyone has some suggestions they'd be welcome!

@Galloway: Cheers! Hopefully I keep on cruising at the same level haha

@Gederas: Glad you like him, think he'll look ace when he's in a full squad for sure!

@Sock: Thanks :biggrin.: Aye I think the markings are one of the make or break areas. Having looked over some tattoo art I'm considering trying to incorporate some more complicated designs over time than simple 'tentacle/swirly thing' but will still keep it fairly subdued on the model.

@Fenbain: Thank you!

@Bjorn: Cheers, I hadn't actually decided on the base yet, that's just the one that the model comes on. I'm considering cutting around and removing them from the 'set' bases as I quite like putting them on other styles, though I don't think the current design I use (snowy rocks) would contrast well enough with carcharodons :/ Do you think they'd suit a ship/boarding action style base?

@Kriegs: Haha heya mate, good to see ya! Been a while but still knocking about, glad you like him :biggrin.:

@Observer: Aye, been a while, and some NL aren't far off to get back into the swing of it

@Triszin: Thanks!

@Soldier: Cheers man! ya doing alright? Aye thanks for the heads up, I'll sort out the fan when I move onto the highlights round there. And yeah, think black or the grey should work on the pistol. Probably the grey and make the axe black with markings you reckon?

@Closet Skeleton: Yeah know what you're getting at. Going to try to have something on every marine to keep them separate from just grey marines (scorpions) but will try and keep it bit more subtle. Considering mixing in some black markings on the grey armour on some marines instead of white on black.

@Pearson: Thanks, happy you like it :biggrin.: Was defo a 'wait, what the hell do I even do? Lets just do some curly things' moment at the start

@Dosjetka: Cheers, seems to have gone down well :smile.: Don't have a definitive grey recipe, im far too in the habit of not noting what I work with, but hoping to have a look back home and nail it down. From memory was black spray, heavy drybrush of eshin grey, light/medium drybrush of a fenrisian grey, 50/50 wash of nuln oil/nuln oil gloss (love this for darkening armour but keeping it with a bit of shine, just one or the other never seems to work right) then line highlights with a grey between the two previous, and final highlights/chips with a grey like dawnstone. I'll see about getting an accurate version up at some point. And aye, black for the pistol would probably work. Think black on the axe with markings on that as well or too much?

@Steamius: Thank you!

@Naryn: Cheers, shouldn't hopefully be long!

Very nice start brother:thumbsup: Your first figure is very impressive.... you've given him a rather ghostly appearance, which I like very much. The Carcharodon Astra are a scary lot, and I think you've captured that aspect quite well. I'm looking forward to seeing more:yes:

Thanks frater :D glad you like him. Wouldn't have personally said this guy was particularly ghostly, but if you say so... Do you think a mixture of this grey, and a lighter grey on some of the armour plates would work well? Have been considering some squad members with more personalised armour, more akin to the mix of colours a shark would have through its skin.

I can never get enough of Carcharodons!

Nicely done. Eager to see more. :wink:

What are you going to do? A whole army or "just" a bunch of different minis?

Looking forward to doing more :D Hopefully they whet your appetite. At the moment it's just the kill-team, the sgt then the four marines above but depending I might expand them to a full army, since my previous loyalist project (of custodes) is floundering and I need a foil for my soon-to-be night lords thread :P

Pretty well, thanks. Sorting out what I need to start up the VII Legion again at the moment. Honestly, I think the exile markings on the axe might be just a bit much...the balance is really good at the moment, and I think a large surface like that would push it a bit too far. Misspoke a bit when I made my last post -- was more thinking just straight up white when I said "lighter grey" for the pistol. But honestly I'm not really certain now...

I think that would work quite nicely:thumbsup:
