Winged Mandrake Thing (WIP)

I thought I'd have a go at making a winged HQ. I'm aware that we can't actually field a winged HQ (nor even an HQ that can do more than walk briskly). However, if I do a good enough job, perhaps I can mail a picture to GW with a caption saying 'Please!'.

I like Mandrakes and I had a spare(ish) one, so I decided to use that.

There's still some painting to do, but I thought I'd share my current progress:

Nice idea, any progress with the painting? If you were looking for any ideas regarding the wings, I think they'd look good wth some Mandrake runes/patterns in a very pale, glowing style, as a continuation of the markings they have on their bodies. Would provide a nice contrast to the body too, reversing the colours of the rune and flesh.

Not sure if I'm talented enough to pull that off, but I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the input.

To be honest, the thing that's frustrating me at the moment is his right foot. It snapped a while back and refused to join back together nicely (there's now a large and very noticeable crack in it). That was actually the reason why I used him for this conversion in the first place, as I was actually expecting it to end badly and didn't want to mess up one of my undamaged models.

However, since it actually went a lot better than expected, it's now his broken foot that's standing out and annoying me.

Okay, thanks. I'll try and get hold of some liquid green stuff and see if that does the trick.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind:

(Either way, these aren't finished yet - still need to neaten them up and blend them with some darker colours. Just wanted to check that I'm at least on the right lines.)

Aye, that's looking striking already, once neatened up and defined a little more, they should look good. In terms of examples/ideas, I was thinking something like the glowing runes on this great bit of art. Alternatively, a quick Google of Dark Eldar runes fetches up the chart at the bottom, which could also be helpful.

Ah, I wish I'd thought of that before painting them.

As it was, I was mostly going by the squiggles on the actual model.

Still, some need to be redone anyway (as I went over the white a little too much), so I'll see if I can get any of them to look more like those, without having to start from scratch.

As always, thanks for the input.

Update: Runes are progressing quite well, I think.

(I accidentally knocked his blade off, but I haven't glued it back on yet as it gives me better access to his right wing.)

Unfortunately, after reexamining his right foot, I believe it's completely buggered beyond the aid of any green stuff.

Only thing I can think of now is to try and steal a replacement foot from a Mandrake of the same type.

Those runes are looking really striking.

Thanks. Might try a glaze to finish them off, but I'm not sure.

Regarding the foot, it's really not that noticable, I know that now you've seen it, you'll never not, but I'd vote to leave it.

It's not too noticeable in the picture but it's *really* obvious IRL.

I know it's a small thing but it's the sort of thing that nevertheless frustrates me beyond words. :wallbash:

I'll try and take a picture of it and see if you still think I should ignore it.

Well, I quite like the winged Mandrake conversion. It's looking cool, especially with the contrast between the skin and wings.

Regarding the crack... No, you're not wrong to fixate on it. Now that you've shown closer pictures, yeah that's huge. Like, "Friday Night Magic at the FLGS" (sorry, not sorry :lol) level of crack right there.

Okay, I'm currently working on getting a replacement foot painted. All going well, I'll try to transplant it tomorrow.

(Part of me wants to try something more ambitious - like replacing both his feet with the clawed Scourge feet, but I think I'll leave that option for now.)

Anyway, I've got a question - is there anything else you think I should do to the runes? I was wondering about using Soulstone Blue to make them shiny, but I'm concerned that this will diminish the white (and so reduce the glow effect). Same goes for a blue glaze.

Any thoughts?

Scourge feet transplantation does sound interesting...

Regards to painting, I'm not really sure, I think diminishing the glow would be an undesirable outcome, as it looks really striking. Not much of a painter, so I can't offer much more advice there, really.

The foot is fixed!

He's ended up standing slightly off his base now, but I think that's actually due to my gluing his other foot too far back.

Anyway, this is how he currently looks:

I'm aware that the base is a bit of a mess, I just haven't got round to cleaning that up yet. Also, the more keen-eyed among you might notice that I swapped his sword. I wasn't entirely happy with the paint scheme on the old one (I'd done the same on other weapons, but this time it came out a little too dark), and I also wanted to try a slightly different design.

Anyway, aside from touching up a few minor things (I think I'll make the armour plates on the wings black, to make them a little more distinct), I think he's about finished.

Unless you guys have any other suggestions for him?

Okay, thanks anyway. Your advice and input has been a really great help.

Likewise, thank you to everyone else who commented on this.

Liking that new blade and the foot replacement went well by the looks of it.

There's quite a striking contrast between the two sides of his wings, i.e. the runes and lack of. Adding runes to the other side might then make him look a little busy, though?

Very well done, worth the effort :tu: I really like how you've made the runes looks like they're glowing smoothly :)

Broken weapons is a problem I've had with my Mandrakes too, I swapped in some Wyche ones which works and helps give them a bit more variety too so that's an option if you need it.

Thank you.

And yeah, I think that having runes on both sides might look a little too busy/cluttered. Still, I'll see if I can think of anything else to put on the back of his wings.

Thanks very much.

It seems we're of the same mind on the second point because both of the weapons I've used on this model were Wych weapons. The basic Mandrake blade looked a bit plain for my tastes, so I wanted to replace it and I think the Wych blades are a good size and shape. I did try a Huskblade on a different Mandrake model, but I thought it looked oversized, which I wasn't fond of.
