Just coming back to 40k after giving up on 7th edition and decided I wanted to collect a new army and fell in love with the Mechanicus. Here is what I was thinking of for my Stygies VIII after seeing the points changes in chapter approved 2018:

Forge World: Stygies VIII

Detachment: Brigade

Tech-Priest Dominus
+Eradication Ray
+Macrostubber
+Omnissian axe

Tech-Priest Enginseer x2

Skitarii Rangers x5
+Transuranic arquebus x2
+Omnispex

Skitarii Vanguard x6
+Plasma caliver x2
+Enhanced Data-tether

Kataphron Breachers x3
+Torsion canon x3
+Arc Claw x3
Kataphron Breachers x3
+Torsion canon x3
+Arc Claw x3

Cybernetica Datasmith x1

Sicarian Ruststalkers x5
+Transonic Razor x5
+Chordclaw x5

Kastelan Robots x2
+Heavy phosphor blasters

Onager Dunecrawler
+Netron laser & Cognis heavy stubber
Onager Dunecrawler
+Eradication beamer & Cognis heavy stubber
Onager Dunecrawler
+Icarus Array & Cognis heavy stubber

Sydonian Dragoon
+Taser lance
Sydonian Dragoon
+Taser lance
Sydonian Dragoon
+Taser lance

Total comes out to 1997 pts, 129 power. I was thinking of infiltrating the Ruststalkers, but otherwise I am still on fence when it comes to relics and other prebattle strategems. Any tips or criticism is welcome.

Edit: Quick changes to increase Skitarrii squads and get rid of the extra data smith.

Two datasmiths is unneccesary. Even one isnt really needed as you can cp their protocol.

You can split your ten man troops into 2 x 5 man sqauds meaning more special weapons overall. There is a good argument for 7 man squads in one of the Admech discussion topics (Admech in ITC) which you can review amd decide upon.

Other than that it looks good and just needs playtested to decide upon your preferred style

Sounds good, I was going to have to get an extra box of skitari for the 4th Arquebus anyways,  I was just worried about being too cheesy and spamming 5 man squads. I will keep one datasmith though to fulfill the elite spot needed for the detachment and repair robots where he can.

Everyone plays this game to win.

Yes enjoyment is part of it but overall everyone wants to win. Never make your army choices based on what you think the opponent will be happy with.

Take what you want and what you think will work and give it a try.

Torsion Breachers and Ruststalkers are unfortunately pure trash, so I suggest replacing them. If you want to play Kataphrons, get a squad of 6 of either variant with plasma culverin or arc whatever with the Servitor Maniple specialist detachment. This will make them actually good.

For Ruststalkers, just replace the unit with Infiltrators.

Why don't you get a fourth HQ and run 2 battalions? An extra 30pt Enginseer will get you 5 more command points.

I'd also combine the robots and Dragoons into single, bigger squads. This will make stratagem usage more efficient.

I will take this under advisement, though I made a typo above. Currently I have it set as a Brigade detachment giving a total of 12 CP. Even if I take the extra HQ and split it into two Battalions I would still only have 9 CP. Though if consolidate the fast attack & kataphrons into one squad I can increase command efficency like you mentioned. I might just consolidate the kataphrons and leave the fast attack split for the brigade and try it out the way it is. If I have to I will cut the Datasmith for the extra HQ.

You think Ruststalkers are bad even with CA changes? They seem pretty decent to me now.
