Librarian on a Xenos bike - fluff, not rules

Hi,

Have painted my Dark Angels Ravenwing as Deathwatch, including Deathwatch shoulder pads.

Looking to include a Librarian on a Bike (Index option) and am leaning towards putting him on a Xenos bike (I like the look of both the Craftworlds Windrider and Drukhari Reaver), based on old lore about the Deathwatch co-opting alien tech (I have some Ravenwing bikers with Necron gauss flayer-based plasma guns already).

So my questions for the Deathwatch community are:

1) is co-opting tech, e.g. Xenophase blade, still a thing?

2) is there any material out there to corroborate?

To your first point, I don't believe Deathwatch can take any bike HQs. Even in the Index, it wasn't on our list of available units. Visually he could be Deathwatch, but keyword-wise he would have to be in a Space Marine Chapter. The closest thing to represent that in a true Deathwatch detachment would be Jump Pack rules and no twin-bolter. Probably not wise in a competitive environment.

To your second point, people absolutely kit bash xeno tech. I think the most common instance I've seen is taking some Necron Lych guard shields and using them as storm shields or a Dominus Aegis.

Thanks Mobius0288, I have been using Deathwatch as a paint scheme since 5th ed (long before any rules were available) in my Codex:DA and Codex:SM armies, both of which do have bike-mounted HQs. I read an article on wiki that suggests there is tension between radical and puritan factions with regards to the use of xenos tech, but I'm happy to hear people are still borrowing.

Yes that's exactly it. It usually comes down to radical and puritan, though that seems more influenced by Inquisitors rather then the militant forces (Deathwatch, Grey Knights, Adeptus Sororitas). I can definitely see Watchmasters having a say in what is allowable as they have been appointed by the emperor himself (7th edition, before Guiliman) and are responsible for the Watch fortresses, as well as their designated sector.

Radical and puritan are more inquisitor sides.  The Deathwatch is not really subordinate to inquisitors.  We work with them, but Inquisitors who presume to order watchmasters to do anything are in for a rude shock.
The Deathwatch does maintain xenotech in their vaults, and they do use them for covert missions as well as wargear.  Use every weapon against the xenos, whether it be knowledge of them or their own tech.  The Deathwatch can be trusted to remain loyal in their hatred of the xenos, unlike lesser minds.  Thats part of the hypno-indoc DW recruits undergo to instill a deep hatred of xenos.

So, yeah, a DW captain or libby on a xenos bike is completely legit.

And yeah, phase blades are necron tech, and only entrusted to the Deathwatch, Ordo Xenos Inquisition, and the Assasinorum Callidus.

Thanks guys, off to buy a Reaver!

Like the idea of Necron-sourced storm shields, seems like an easy conversion.

Giving a dreadnought or even a terminator a Tau-sourced ranged weapon also has some appeal.
