Index (Heretic) Astartes

With the return of Index Astartes to the White Dwarf, I thought it'd be interesting to hear which warbands you guys think are important or unique enough to deserve a treatment in the magazine. My pick would be the Crimson Slaughter - I think the most accurate way to represent them on the table at the moment is to field them with the World Eaters legion tactic, but they're more than just mad butchers... despite their name. Getting a couple of their relics back to represent Kranon the Relentless or maybe Draznicht would also be a huge deal for them, aswell as a unique warlord trait.

Any other opinions?

I'd much rather they address a Legion that needs the attention (e.g. Word Bearers) than the Crimson Slaughter, who never really caught on.

My prediction (based on nothing more than a hunch) for the first IA: Traitor CSM is Black Legion though, in the March issue, to go alongside what feels like an inevitable and awesome BL release.

I don't know, I feel like the Red Corsairs are most deserving before all others. They're the largest non-Legion force, they have a named hq with a model... And they are currently stuck with the generic Renegade trait and nothing else. I mean, if you've got enough clout as a renegade faction for Abaddon to gift you a Blackstone Fortress, I think it's fair that you've earned at least a 'legion' trait and a strategem.

I think Marshal Loss's forecast of Black Legion to coincide with Vigilis Part 2 is spot on.

But I also really, really like the Scourged's reasons in favour of Red Corsairs.

(I do have an Impossible Dream That Can Never Be: Blood Ravens from the Dawn of War II if you chose the Corruption path and went to Chaos as an Index Astartes.  Can be a fun fan work though maybe, thanks to Brother Tyler's cool Index Astartes template.)

I just got back my copy of this month's White Dwarf (that I previously lent to a friend in the hospital, he's being discharged tomorrow), and was quite impressed by the quality of this Index Astartes.  Whatever Chaos faction, I reckon I'll be pretty happy with.

As Loss says, they'll probably start with the Black legion, then follow up with the 8 remaining Legions, followed by the Red Corsairs. Maybe there'll be some other Warbands thrown in, like the Crimson Slaughter, Flawless Host, or Blood Gorgons (seriously, why were/are they on the front page of the 6/7/8th edition codex?!).

Because the artwork for the Blood Gorgons is one of the single best Chaos Marine artworks they've ever done? :laugh.:

And I don't think they'll do all of the Traitor Legions. Especially since 2 have their own Codex, and 2 more (World Eaters, Emperor's Children) will likely be getting their own Codex. So that'd just leave Black Legion (very likely), Word Bearers, Iron Warriors, Night Lords and Alpha Legion.

I'm hoping for Khorne Daemonkin personally.

I'd prefer them getting the Codex Treatment. Khorne Daemonkin is what got me into 7th, then 8th dropped right after I got it

I'd love a Black Legion IA article, but I'm kinda hoping that any update concerning them will be incorporated in Imperium Nihilus, part 2. Then again, GW isn't known for passing up an opportunity to make a quick buck...

It is nice, certainly, but the Chapter is less well known than Skyrar's Dark Wolves!

The old IE did all Legions (if you count Black Legion = Sons of Horus), IIRC. I'd imagine they'd rehash it for a new age. Amusingly, the Daemon naming tables in Wrath and Rapture are the same as in Slaves to Darkness!

That isn't really a Warband or Chapter though. I don't think it would fit too well.

Genuinely, I'd like to see each of the legions that don't have characters yet expanded a bit first, just a few extra rules, some relics, a character or two and that's it. After that, go for the Corsairs, Daemonkin warbands, Renegades and the similar.

I feel the original Legions deserve a Codex each of the own, with an extensive part of possible splinter groups and war bands, showing how they are not really unified Legions anymore ( even if KSons and DG recently seem to go the other way), thus showing how much fun and diversion can be had even when sticking with just one Legion

For IA, I think an update of the Red Corsairs to the Dark Imperium would be nice at some point. Actually, I think, crazy and broken old Huron might be the first Traitor to go Primaris .... and get a decent model along the way...

Also, in no particular order:

Dragon Warriors -

because we need more pyromaniac evil traitor Salamanders

The Hedonistari -

I love the name alone. The fluff blurb in the current Codex is nice, too.

The Pure

- from the next ADB novel. Everything I heard about the book so far is ace, including the Chaos Marines. Actually, I hope to see a follow up novel from the PoV of the Pure along the way. So, it would only make sense to have an IA along that way. It will be out in the limited edition at first and you will have to sent BL an actual vial of your own blood and pay the price in tortured souls. Will be worth every ounce, though

Seeing as how the Blood Gorgons have their own novel, I'd say they're more well-known than a group that only appeared in the 4th Edition Chaos Marines codex and Imperial Armour Volume Thirteen ;)

And they are? Huh, cool.

I think daemonkin should get their own codex, and it shouldn't be Khorne only. I find it silly that the only hybrid daemonmancers with tabletop rules are the servants of the Blood God... it seemed like a marketing gimmick more than reflecting the many-splendored nature of Chaos.

I don't think they should. Allies covers the daemonkin aspect pretty well already. What I'd like to see tho are better and more flavourful summoning mechanics like they introduced in AoS with the new edition.

I see lots of people predicting IA: Black Legion, but I think the current CSM codex kind of negates the need for one. A Black Legion player already has access to all the units and stratagems in the codex (except the Legion-specific ones), whereas a World Eaters or Emperor's Children player can't make use of any rules for non-Khorne or Slaanesh aligned units. A lack of rules seems like the reason the Crimson Fists got their own IA article, so I guess the justification is similar. For this reason I think World Eaters and Emps Children will be the ones to receive IA articles as opposed to an entire codex for each army. I'm not sure GW would have 5 separate CSM factions with their own codices when they barely have more than 5 loyalist codices.

I admit a Black Legion IA would tie in well with Vigilus and an Abaddon release though.

Well you say that but then I take a look to the loyalists and there are people who fiercely defend the need for IA: Ultra Marines already. :P

It's hard to predict based on one article existing so far, but my guess is that Index Astartes will mainly be for armies that don't have specific model releases. If a Chapter/Legion gets enough model support specifically for them, they'll likely get their own Codex to help market it.

So I don't think that Black Legion, World Eaters or Emperor's Children will get IA articles. But Red Corsairs, Crimson Slaughter, or even Daemonkin (of any of the gods) might.
