Heresy?

So i've been thinking of getting back into 40k, but I am torn.

On one hand, I want to build a primaris army, and i love the raven guard.

On the other hand, I love the Night Lords too. Especially their aesthetic.

Would it be possible for me to build a Primaris army, converted up to look suitably night lords-y, but play them as both space marines, or CSM by swapping in certain units?

E.g. For my space marines army, i'll use repulsors and intercessors. When I want to play Night Lords, I'll swap the repulsors for rhinos and bring in some converted raptors.

Would you guys have a problem with that?

There's already a lot of suspicion that Cawl used Traitor Primarch geneseed in the Ultima Founding, despite what Guilliman has ordered, So why not? They could be more akin to pre-heresy Night Lords, with all of the strange goings on that entailed. But with some Raven Guqrd influences, as a sop to the primarch they officially descend from.

List wise I'm  not sure how you would get a Chaos army to work using Primaris. It just wouldn't. Unit selection and models just aren't there.

But I'm all for Primaris Night Lords. They would look bad ass especially if you do the winged helmet look. Revivers were made for Night Lords.

Aye, trying to mesh Primaris and CSM army lists would be a tough one if you want to have anything decent when using your CSM (and if you focus on the CSM list, there'll be plenty of stuff you won't be able to use as Primaris).

To be honest though, this should be a question you ask your local community with whom you'll be playing with. Us anonymous internet users can only help so much. :)

Lol, I'm definitely feeling torn between my inner raven guard and night lord.

Pre-heresy Night Lords philosophy is probably where it will end up with. I had a story in mind of a night lord whose engagement with the raven guard in the 40k period led to the shadow captain and night lord being so badly injured and their armour so badly damaged that the Night Lord was mistakenly recovered by the imperium. To save his life, he was put through the rubicon primaris and given charge of a new primaris chapter built upon Raven Guard geneseed.

So he has to continue his charade as the former shadow captain. But with his new chapter, he has the chance to remould and in a way, rebuild the Night Lords legion of old.

When Alpharius and Omegon meet at band camp, little do the Emperor and Horus know of the high jinks that await them. Laugh along with the madcap heresy as the twins do their best to reunite their warring lieges and save the galaxy.

Why not make a ravenguard successor that’s homeworld is similar to that of Nostromo (whatever the spelling is), leading to a chapter recruit pool similar to the night Lords. They then use similar colors and iconography, for the same reasons (to scare the enemy into compliance), but don’t share in the Heresy.

So many people get the nature and nurture thing mixed up. The Night Lords were they way they were because of where they came from, and who lead them. The Night Haunter was the way he was because of where he grew up. His visions helped, sure, but ultimately his upbringing being so crap was what shaped him and his legion.

If the recruits and condition of the world are the same, the outlook would be similar no matter what the geneseed.

They could do bat stuff with the lore that their people value bats (maybe even attribute them to the Emperor) as creatures who can see even in the darkness of life. So it’s symbolic of their eternal watch in the darkness to come.

I really like that idea. Nature versus nurture. Give them an unorthodox love of Reivers and terror tactics and night fighting, enough so that there's some real (I prefer unanswered) questions as to whether Cawl did something he shouldn't have or if this is just an odd case of parallel cultural influence on different chapters leading to the same sort of results.
