Are Nurgle Daemons fun to play?

I play guard, but I'm looking for a second army.

 

I have friends who play 40k and others who play AoS, so Daemons would be my choice to allow me to play both.

 

I have a friend who plays Khorne (AoS), and Thousand Sons (40k), and so that kind of rules out Khorne and Tzeetch.

 

 

That leaves Nurgle and Slannesh, but I'm leaning towards Nurgle. The only thing is that the models look kinda gross!

But are they fun to play? Are they quite horde like too or can they be played with Elites?

Well, they are fun, but with only 1/4 of the codex Daemons you might want to have more options.

 

I play my Nurgle Daemons as a semi horde army consisting of 60 - 70 Plaguebearers, all 3 Herolds and then some other stuff I want to take.

Maybe after the point reduction for GUOs you can field 2 or 3 of them, some Nurglings and other stuff to have a more elite style army. I never tried it.

Nurgle Daemons are pretty fun, especially when your opponent is tearing his hair out because they just won't die :lol:

 

And ALL Daemons armies are Horde-based because their Elites, while decent, don't have enough Oomph to field as a proper army.

 

... That and Nurgle's Elites are astronomically expensive, money-wise, compared to the others. Seriously, the Beasts are a single model for 40 USD are best taken in Squads of 3, and can be in run of squads of NINE.

To answer your question, I find them incredibly fun to paint because they...or at least my setup...has a totally different playstyle.  As you may see from my link, my core is a bunch of Nurglings as Troops to take Objectives.  Then I just built just a few heavy hitters around that; they're not Elites, but HQ Characters and Heavy Support.  Made it easy to paint (I spedpaint with inks, 1st time I did that), fun to model (lots of conversion opportunities), and hilarious to play.  And it's actually very low-model count as the "horde" portion of Nurglings are just a few bases.

 

What I did, and not sure if you want to, just presenting an option, is I drew from several Codices: a virulent Nurgle soup.  For example, I carefully drew from both Chaos Daemons and Death Guard to form a single Faction Keyword Nurgle Detachment, where I had Nurglings as Troops but my HQs were Death Guard Daemon Princes because they had better Warlord Traits and Relics.  By taking them in a single Detachment I do lose out on Death Guard's Legion Tactics, which was fine as I took no shooting units from there.  Instead, my ranged units I took (at that time) from Renegades & Heretics for some tanks and artillery manned by Nurglings, but now I have prepared 2 Renegade Knights converted to look more Nurgle-ish (will post soon).  However, many of those things can't be used in AoS (like tanks), and I don't know how Nurglings do in AoS.

 

Result: I get some infiltrating tarpits of Nurglings that focus on the Objectives or screening, then go hunting with my Daemon Princes and long ranged.  Really throws people for a loop because I got a bunch of immovable objects with some unstoppable forces.  It is very unconventional, but that's its charm.

 

Pros:

+ easy/fun to paint/model/convert

+ not that many models actually, since each Nurgling base is 4 Wounds

+ lots of options

 

Cons:

- it's pretty soupy

- have to be a little careful what you choose as you can loose Legion Tactics

- I don't know how well this setup will do in AoS

Personally I love the way mono nurgle daemons play, movement is key, especially how you use pile in and consolidate moves. You need to focus on the game objective and frustrate your opponent by closing shooting units down. Unlike guard, your game plan will not be to table the opponent.

The issues with nurgle is the limited units with armour modifiers and lack of shooting, it can make games slow, and can be disheartening if you were expecting to cause mass damage and table the opponent with ease. Nurgle is best suited to hoards of plague bearers and units of at least 7 beasts, flies, and nurglings.

If you enjoy the guard gunline, you may struggle early on, but stick with it as they are an interesting army with decent options.

Just buy 3x of nurgle daemons princes, maybe a GUO for fun, 3 blobs of Plague bearers, 3 units of nurglings, and if you don't mind splashing death guard 3x bloat drones (they are nurgle daemons after all). That list right there is tons of fun to play, and actually pretty good. It may not come in first in a tournament but after you get the hang of playing nurgle you can really attrition some opponents for points.

 

They are definitely an army that wins via points not kills, so as long as you are ok with that.
