Titanicus - Winter of Heresy Challenge Project

I've never taken part in one of these events and have been sat on the fence for some time with Adeptus Titanicus so decided to take the plunge.

I think Adeptus Titanicus, from an outsider's point of view. can look financially intimidating and then you also have to factor in just who you know that is playing. When I compared it to the regular cost of a 40k army it's not really that different but the aspect that appeals to me is that it's low model count so I am actually seeing threads all over the net where people are actually completing far more armies than 40k armies.

So from an unpainted plastic crack mountain perspective this is good.

I've been playing the buying game quite tactically so far. £100 for the Titan Battle Group means you are getting the Warhounds for free but if you shop around you can make even further savings from independent stockists or ebay as I did and got mine for £85 saving £55 in doing so if I had bought the titans individually. From what I can tell I could buy a second battle group and I would be done for my army so this is very appealing.

If I intend to play though I'd need to spend another £60 or so on rules and the management cards but given how I'd be paying more for 40k in that regard I can live with it.

So that is how I reasoned with my wallet to get it to open up and part with my hard earned cash.

The Kits

Now these are nice and so far looking straight forward to build. The Warhounds feel like assembling Sentinels so far and I am in the process of magnetising them but on the whole very easy.

I've not looked at the Reaver or Warlord yet, other than a quick glance but both seem to be comparable to assembling the 40k Knight model. It's also worth looking into magnetising at this point, the Warlord comes with slots that fit I think 5x1mm magnets (don't quote me on that size) but the Reaver and Warhounds will take a little bit of drilling.

 Picking a Legion

Now I was kind of like "I used to play first edition Adeptus Titanicus, I'll just make either Fire Wasps or the War Griffons like I used to play when I was a kid!" but it's a bit more complicated than that. You can just pick a Legio willy nilly, go for the one that appeals to you for colours or lore but each comes with it's own Legio special rules so it might be worth doing a little research.

Legio Gryphonicus

So settling on the War Griffons I have started to crack on with the models. You can put as much or as little work as you want into these models as to be honest they work perfectly well with a stock base and build but I want to try and capture the scale of these beasties.

So to get a feel for the models I have started with a Warhound, the first of two that I hope will be scouting and harassing enemies of the Emperor at some point in the not too distant future.

Now with the base I wanted to tell a tale. The idea here is that a Renegade Army Engineer squad has stumbled across what they think to be an Imperial Army command post. The truth being that it is in fact a squad of Solar Auxilia Veletaris Storm who were in the process of delivering vital plans to their superiors but their armour Aurox Transport was destroyed killing most of the squad and leaving the survivors injured and taking shelter in the smaller building on the base.

As the Renegades stumble into the Auxilla Veletaris squad a vicious close quarters fire fight breaks out between the two forces and after a seven hour skirmish the renegades manage to get their radio working long enough to call in a Medusa barrage killing the Imperial forces and destroying the building in the process.

Completely oblivious to the precious cargo that the Auxillia carried, tired and low on ammunition the Renegades begin to fortify their position and settle in for the night. A few hours later one of their sentries swears he saw a loyalist Astartes squad in the distance as he wakes his comrades. Fatigued, cold and hungry with very little ammo left the squad breaks cover and flees into the night.

Now what has the Titan got to do with all this? Absolutely nothing, scouting through the ruins the crew don't even notice what has happened here hours or days earlier.

And that is the point of the little narrative, there are hundreds of thousands of little stories that could be told in a war like the Heresy each of which could be made into a film in their own right but the scale of the conflict makes such events meaningless.

"For every battle honour a thousand heroes go unsung and unremembered"

Easily my favourite quote of forty kay that has stayed with me since I was a child and sums up the conflict of the Heresy so perfectly.
