Assassins in March

Recommended Posts

So it looks like White Dwarf will be giving some love and attention toward assassins this March. Is anybody else very hyped up, physically unready for this, and unreasonably hopeful as to what it will give us?

Just me?

I know that it will probably be just some fluff updates and a reprint of the vanguard rules from the FAQ but I retain hope that we'll get the Crimson Fists treatment. What I'd hope for is...

  • An Execution Force specialist detachment
  • Smattering of strategems
  • A way to field them in Imperium detachments without wrecking detachment rules (unlikely but hope is my first step toward disappointment)

What do you guys think we'll get? I've got 14 assassin models that can't wait to see the light of day.

Awesome news. I have been using a 5 assassin detachment with my Custodes and its going pretty well. This can only be good for them.

I'd actually love to hear more details about your army and how it performs. Do you keep up a thread or blog that I could peruse?

I think everyone looking at this is missing something: The headline is "Index Imperialis: Assassins. Not Index Officio Asassinorum, ie Index Imperialis will contain other things than assassins. Perhaps Inquisition Units? Is this a Imperial Agents Codex we've been asking for?

You, good sir, are officially the conductor of the hype train. I applaud your hype and hope it to be accurate.

Sadly, even I can't go that far (but I want to.) I hope they do more Index Imperialis in the future but I'm 99.999999% confident that March will contain only our stealthy operatives of the officio assassinorum. Still, hope springs eternal.

I mean...we know there's more temples in the Assasinorum than just the 4 we have models for. :tongue.:

I doubt it'll go there but it would be awesome.

I think the only two other temples are Venenum and Vanus. Venenum could work, seeing as how they work with (surprise surprise) venom and poisons. But Vanus? I'm doubting that one. I think the whole thing with Vanus was they get others to kill their target for them, whether it be through hacking, information, etc. How would that work as a model?

Also, it's been a long time since I've last read anything about the other temples. So I could be completely wrong here lol.

The flip side to the hype train is, perhaps this is just a fluff piece? Hasn't their been Index articles before which shared nothing of note game-wise?

Quite possibly, however we know that WD is guaranteed rules for 40k/ AoS alternating and the last rules came in the form of Index Astartes, so it stands to reason that "Index Imperialis: Assassins" is rules :)

Why!?! Why must you give words to my deepest fears?!

I agree with you that the Venenum Temple assassins make more sense for field work than the Vanus Temple does. I'd love to see an assassin who's shtick is great wound rolls and ways of generating mortal wounds. Heck, make him close ranged if you need a balancing factor. Assassins are already a sort of glass cannon.

However, I can see the Venenum Temple having to field assassins up close from time to time. Occasionally, a target needs dead and dead now. In those situations, I could see the operative switching to a data support role with other Imperial operatives. I picture an assassin that isn't your typical combat character (though they wouldn't be worthless) but instead have a host of abilities that benefit your other models or, more likely, hinder the enemy. Heck, I think 8th edition is the time for them because you could make them kinda meh on their own but tie a host of strategems specifically to having them in your army. Strats that hinder enemy shooting (-1 to hit against unit within 6" of assassin) because he hacked their targeting gear. Strats that replicate the Callidus ability to mess up command communications but on any other turn (lasts 1 turn or phase, causes enemy strategems to cost +1 CP on a +4.) Things like that.

Venenum - fixed to wound rolls against everything non vehicle... templates (aka D6) weapons and grenades.

Vanus - if  they are the misdirection temple then you give them basic defensive weapons but also give them an ability like instead of shooting they can make an enemy unit attack its self with a weapon of your choice (ie CC or shooting)

Unfortunately not yet, I may start one when I return from sea at the end of February though.

Assassins always seem to be a bit hit and miss. People tend to either focus fire them down (which is great as the Culexus especially take a fair bit to shift), or they get ignored. Either way I have not found them particularly game-breaking, but I've had some good moments with the Culexus against people who aren't expecting two of them.

I'm really hoping we get a 'Master Assassin' or something along those lines. Someone to direct the execution force, but not necessarily have the ability to be the warlord as I do not think that fits with the current fluff we have been given. Time will tell, super excited for this. Would love to be able to run a double digit assassin list or something crazy like that.
