Thoughts on the griffon

I’ve been mindbending a new thought process for my next project army. Back to the guard and I’ve basically sold everything to start over.

My thoughts are to have the guard as the mobile anvil with which to smash the enemies of the emperor.

I’m not wanting a static gun line at all and have a desire to have a mobile force.

I like the griffin for a mobile mortar and am wondering your thoughts on its efficacy. I have 2 and would like to add a third.

Rest of army will have -10 karskin, 10 grenadiers, 15 engineers, 10 shotgun vets, 30 elysians, 10 dkok infantry, 22 death riders, a storm chimera, a taurox, 4 centaurs, 4 cyclops, 2 Mortian heavy tanks, a shadow sword.

I have 2 knights(Archaon and atrapos), and will be building up 3 tactical squads, 1 contemptor, 1 ironclad and 6 terminators worth of imperial fists to be the hammer.

48" HeavyD6* S6 Ap-1 D:D3 ignores cover

*roll 2d6 pick highest

For ~75pts... yeh that seems pretty decent

Would I take 3? Dunno 2 seems sufficient if included with other artillery like basilisks and manticores

If it was more than D6 shots definitely

I’m not a big fan of the basilisk or manticore for front line mobile war fare as I see them as a rear echelon ordinance piece that has no place at the line.

Game wise I’m dead wrong but the fluff kinda Jill’s it for me. I’ve tried to write my unit fluff to incorporate a arty detachment but just can’t seem to manage it.

I reaaaaaallllyyyy want 2 bombards but have the same issue there with the range of the arty being soooo far off table it’s ridiculous.

That brought me to the griffon. Heavy mortar, chimera chassis, not a NOPE gun and kept with my idea of mobile warfare.

Decent stats and a midline probability for success- sounds like guard to me;)

I thought we agreed not to mention the Griffon because it makes me sad? Now GW is looking to the past a lot maybe there's chance of a new model... a man can dream! I think it's still solid even without the majesty of blast templates, and as duz says two of most artillery pieces is usually enough so you can spread your capabilities around.

I think the problems with the Griffin are threefold:

1) It doesn't do much damage for it's points.

2) it's ideal target profile overlaps with normal mortars quite a bit - this wouldn't be such an issue without point 1 but when added to it the problem is crippling.

3) Assuming I wanted a weapon that engaged that target profile and I cared greatly about ignoring cover I'd take the Bombard due to it's greater shot output, range, rend, and russ level toughness meaning it wont use up any of your valuable 'out of LoS' space and can actually use it's heavy bolter reliably.

Edit: Going to have to admit here that I really like the Bombard.

The Griffon is a very poor piece, due to its very weird combination of stats.

d3 damage means it is supposed to target multi-wound targets. But its relatively low S and modest AP means it won't be able to score wounds reliably on such targets, which typically have good T and save.

Its low number of shots only aggravates its shortcomings and makes it pretty useless vs hordes, which it might wound easily.

Essentially, the Griffon is the poor combination of a Basilisk and a mortar team, and does both jobs inefficiently. It can only become somewhat useful vs a very narrow category of targets: multi-W, low-T and low-save models, such as bikes, Ogryns, Tyranid warriors, and some DE vehicles (the latter of which it won't hit, anyway).

I appreciate all offerings on this AFV and have taken note- I’m going to order a bombard and have it next to the griffons to NOPE stuff ;)

Also... I really wants one of the precious and have a friend that’s willing to part with one nos.

The griffon is a sweet mini and I look forward to finishing painting them up.

Of course, I’m staring at 2 bin boxes of washed resin right now and it makes my brain ache with anticipation to get started.

I want to finish at least one of my Bolt Action armies before I begin on this guard project though so I better get busy:)
