Hi Guys,

I'm new to Bolter and Chainsword, having only come back to 40k now that my son is interested, after a short 20 year break!

I used to collect Space Wolves, but all the models are long gone (like Russ). So I started again with the Wake the Dead box (my son's collecting Craftworlds).

I've played with a few different options and settled on painting them as a successor chapter, to give me flexibility and the option to try out different codexes and chapter tactics.

First the explanation - Whilst the below task force has detachments of Deathwatch and Space Wolves, it's actually all from one Chapter - The Raptors.

Also known as 'Reasonable Marines', they are a Raven Guard successor that use actual camouflage, sneaking, and tactics, rather than running at the enemy painted in bright colours. As a Chapter, the Raptors have been nearly rendered extinct multiple times, but have learned to adapt to changing circumstances so well that they have flourished where other Chapters would simply have had their names added to the ranks of the fallen. They're almost always deployed as individual task forces or kill teams and the Raptors' Chapter culture is one that is very wary of the idea of martial glory or honour, instead preferring pragmatism, adaptability and completion of the mission over all other concerns.

In my eyes, this pragmatism and adaptability has led to them taking Primaris reinforcements from multiple gene seeds, allowing individual marines to excel in roles that their gene seed makes them naturally suited to fighting.

The Raptors look at this as an evolution of the work undertaken by Primarch Corax after the drop site massacre, where he secured the original primarch DNA (for all 20 primarchs) from the emperor to try and remake his legion. The resulting Astartes, though lacking combat experience, were even more capable than typical Raven Guard Space Marines and were assigned the name "Raptors".

We start with 10 CP, and use 6 before the battle begins on detachments and relics. We also use 2 CP for the Teleportarium strategem on the Intercessor units without Hellblasters. We therefore have 5 x 5+ chances to regain those CP before the battle (1 chance per strategem), using the Warlord Trait - Lord of Hidden Knowledge. Deployment and pre-battle isn't a battle round, so we can regenerate as many points as we roll the 5+ for. Hopefully ending up with around 4 for the battle rounds... not much I know.

If the Deathwatch could be a specialist detachment (like Indomitus Crusaders) I'd save some CP and make an SW Character the Warlord.. maybe one day. I could also potentially save 3 CP by just taking 1 relic in the stalker pack (Wulfen Stone) and only Teleporting the Intercessors with Plasma Inceptors. Dropping 2 Power Swords from the Intercessors, 1 Power Axe from the Battle Leader (13 points). Then picking up a Frost Axe to replace Ironfang. Thoughts?

For deployment, the 2 Intercessor units without Hellblasters are off the table in the Teleportarium. Whilst the Intercessor unit with Hellblasters will sit on an objective in the deployment zone (with the Watch Master), making full use of their 36" range (and the Auspex Scan Strategem if the enemy appears nearby from reserves). The Watch Master can also help them re-roll all misses, including misses from overwatch or auspex scan. Because of the Aggressor, the Intercessor unit with Hellblasters can also move if required, without penalties to their Heavy weapon hit rolls (so we deploy them in hiding if going 2nd).

Lastly, the 4 SW Bike Characters will be screened by the Cyberwolves, who we will try to hide from LOS (using their low profiles) to prevent shooting at the visible bike characters. Number of units deploying no longer has an affect on who goes first, so we aren't hindered by all the individual SW units.

Speaking of the SW Characters, we spent 6 CP on strategems pre-battle to make them better. Wulfen Stone and Saga of the Savage give each of them 2 extra attacks. Armour of Russ ensures the key enemy unit fights last. Whilst the Ironfang causes D3 mortal wounds on a Wound roll of 6. Blood Scent Strategem is also available for +1 to wound if they are all attacking a titan. 5 Thunder Hammer attacks, 5 Crozius attacks, 5 Rune Sword attacks, 5 Ironfang attacks, re-rolling all hits and re-rolling wound rolls of 1. Same buffs apply to the 4 Cyberwolves if they are in range, 5 attacks each, re-rolling charges, re-rolling all hits and re-rolling wound rolls of 1.

All 4 SW Characters can also Heroically Intervene from 6" away! They will always Heroically Intervene in the opponent’s charge phase if able to, even if they aren’t the target of a charge, regardless of whether they make any charge moves. So, if the SW characters are within 6" at the end of the charge phase, they just walk right in to combat and won't even trigger Overwatch.

In turn 1, we can ideally advance the Jump Pack Watch Captain 13"-18" to a defensible ruin, either on or near an objective in the middle of the board. He then uses the Beacon Angelis to transport the 5 Hellblasters into Rapid Fire range (>15"). The bikes advance, hopefully we can still position the cyberwolves as a screen, they also all have invulnerable saves in case a shooting angle opens up (they also have the Stormcaller rune power and Cloaked by the Storm Stratagem if required). Their twin rapid fire bolters / storm bolters can start clearing any screens.

In turn 2, we try to get the Jump Pack Watch Captain in charge range of something, teleporting in one or both of the Intercessor squads around him to melt any screening units and work on armoured units with the plasma inceptors (re-rolling 1s for overcharging). Meanwhile the bikes should also be in charge range, having cleared any screen with their twin rapid fire bolters / storm bolters. Aim is to position all characters (including the Watch Captain) to not be shot at after the combat phase (through clever placement and hiding the Cyberwolves), but also trying to be close enough for heroic interventions against enemy charges.

The 9 Hellblasters, 3 Plasma Inceptors and 2 Wolf Guard Battle Leaders focus on high toughness targets not affected by Hellfire rounds (Vehicles and Titans), everyone else makes full use of Special Issue Ammunition to take out the rest.

Turn 3 onwards, we have troops in all sections of the board, while the bikes and jump pack captain are fast enough to respond to enemy movements.

Would love to hear opinions on it's strength and weaknesses as it will affect how I convert all the characters.

What do you like or not like about the above?

Cheers
Mike

Just a few rule clarifications.

You can't roll for lord of hidden knowledge for specialist detachments or extra relics. It is generally accepted that these stratagems are before you even deploy (list building) so you cannot place your watchmaster to roll for the refund. You can only do it for the teleportarium strat if your watchmaster was deployed first.

Also rune priests on a bike only get 1 tempestas power, battlescribe is wrong in allowing you to choose two. Rune priests are an index only choice and their datasheet in Index Imperium only lets you choose one tempestas and smite. You can still cast 2 powers however.

As for the list, I think you're overestimating the screening potential of a few wolves. Even though you might be able to hide them from normal anti infantry weapons, there's plently of no LOS needed weapons that can take them out and leave them vulnerable. You also leave your characters very vulnerable to smite as it targets the closest visible enemy unit.

Thanks for the feedback and rules clarification, that obviously changes my plans considerably.

It looks like that Supreme Command detachment just isn't feasable. Costing way too much CP without the chance to get it back.

I've had a rethink and came up with the below (still keeping an SW Outrider detachment with 2 Characters on Bikes and the Cyberwolves for screening). Then added a battalion of Catachan (fits with the theme of a Raptors army). Also starting the game with a much more respectable 13CP for the powerful Deathwatch and SW strats.

I'm a huge fan of the Raptors in lore, glad to see someone making an army that gives em justice.

Their chapter master isnt bad, and might be worth bring a scout battalion from C:SM for.

For Space Wolves, 2 rune priests and Njall are super good, unlocking the d6 living lightning strat.
I can personally attest to how utterly broken Armour of Russ is.  It is so incredibly powerful.

Assume luck will kick you in the balls, but always be ready to stomp your opponent if he trips.

Just read about about that living lightning strategy, good idea!

Wish I could run a Raptors battalion alongside the Deatchwatch, but I can't see him on Battlescribe, so assume it's not an option?

For Raptors, the chaptermaster isunder FW astartes in battlescribe.
So make a codex: SM detachment, the add FW astartes into that detachment
