Hi everyone, 
Just a quick ask, I've got a 1750pts tournament approaching in May and I'm trying to nail down my list. While mostly the same there are some differences namely drone numbers, the commander loadouts and CP. What I've seen in the mission pack is that all three rounds are objective scoring missions so no pure killpoint rounds. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

If there are no kill points missions then the only reasons to take your shield drones in tactical drone squads are

a. To Manta strike them

b. To fill out an outrider detachment

 

Other than those two reason it is usually better to take them as auxiliary drones with your HQs and squads. Two units of 2 shield drones are significantly harder for an enemy to remove than one unit of one shield drones. If you run single shield drones from your HQ choice it is even better - even against an opponent who is making perfect targeting decisions my Monte Carlo simulation had them coming up as 20% more durable against any reasonably likely opponent. Maximum MSU for the win.

 

This also gives you better options in deployment. If for example you decide to infiltrate up the Ghostkeel you could infiltrate up a stealth team nearby with a couple of shield drones, that makes the Ghostkeel much harder and more frustrating to remove than if it is running without shield drones nearby.

 

I would probably tweak list 1 to spread the drones around a bit better.

What I’ve learnt about commanders, is hat they shouldn’t need the shield generator. The character key word keeps them safe. And if they’re targeted by snipers, well a 4++ isn’t reliable and it won’t stop any mortal wounds coming through.

 

As long as your placing your commanders behind freindly units, you’re golden. We’ve got to make the most of that 2+ shooting.

The 4++ does a lot to protect him against the actual dangerous snipers who usually have AP-2, however we have the best bodyguard unit in the game in form of Drones so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
