Black Shields of Hyades

Defenders of Hyades

Hyades is a Jungle World in the Nimbosa System of the Segmentum Obscurus, not far from the Death World of Fenris. It is a holding of the Navigator House Belisarius and is protected by the Space Wolves Chapter of Space Marines, due to the ancient alliance between these two Imperial factions.

Hyades is unusually rich in naturally-occurring promethium, which is why the wealthy House Belisarius invested heavily in the exploitation of the fuel on Hyades and sponsored the settlement of an Imperial colony on the planet.

Hyades is a hostile planet with large predators and an indigenous, ape-like, reptilian xenos species called "Reptos" by the Imperial settlers. The jungles also grow at an exceptional rate, requiring that they be burnt or cut back at all times to avoid them encroaching on the human settlements.

Even so, Hyades is not considered a Death World by the Administratum and has developed a robust industry on the back of the promethium mines of House Belisarius. Hyades has its own Planetary Defence Forces (PDF), of which, a large number are drawn from mercenaries and retired soldiers of the Astra Militarum.

As a result, the Hyades PDF is unusually professional. At it's peak, the PDF was led by a mysterious man named Commander Cadmus, who turned out to be one of the Fallen Angels of the Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines, a ten-thousand-year-old Traitor to the Emperor from the time of the Horus Heresy.

The PDF took severe casualties during a battle between the Dark Angels, Space Wolves, and Thousand Sons Heretic Astartes, as well as tribes of the primitive, native "Reptos" who were involved in collecting Space Marine gene-seed for the Thousand Sons. Though a skilled and disciplined fighting force, the Hyades PDF ultimately proved to be no match for Space Marines, much less elements from three Chapters of them.

The Fall of Cadmus

Upon arrival on Hyades, Lady Gabriella Belisarius and her Wolfblade bodyguard, Ragnar Blackmane, a Space Wolf Space Marine serving as a bodyguard for House Belisarius as part of a penance for his Chapter, began their routine inspection of the planet's promethium quotas. Meanwhile, Interrogator-Chaplain Vargas of the Dark Angels had entered the Hyades System in search of one of the Fallen Angels, one of the ancient Astartes of the Chapter who had turned Traitor during the Heresy.

Unknown to Gabriella Belisarius or her Wolfblade, Commander Cadmus, an off-worlder in charge of the planetary defences, was the Fallen Angel. Commander Cadmus set in motion a series of events which led to a short conflict between an incoming patrol of Space Wolves and a Battle-Barge of the Dark Angels, the Vinco Redemptor. As the battle raged, Ragnar Blackmane worked out an uneasy truce with a Kill-team of Dark Angels to capture the ancient Traitor Cadmus and rescue Gabriella from his clutches.

As they closed in on their target it was revealed that the Thousand Sons Sorcerer Madox had masterminded the conflict between the Dark Angels and the Space Wolves as a diversion to collect Space Wolves gene-seed for a ritual to bring about the destruction of the Space Wolves Chapter, the Thousand Sons' ancient rivals.

Although Cadmus was ultimately defeated and a large Chaos Fleet was destroyed through a joint effort by the Space Wolves and the Dark Angels, Madox escaped from the planet and a massive Thousand Sons offensive began against the Space Wolves' homeworld of Fenris as the Traitor Legion sought to destroy their oldest rivals once and for all.

The Black Shields of Hyades

In the aftermath of the conflict, a contingent of the remaining veterans in the PDF were distraught at the treachery they had been embroiled in through the machinations of Cadmus.

One of their leaders had spoken to a Veteran Space Wolf of their guilt and received an interesting story in return.. of rare space marines with incredible guilt over their own or their chapters actions. It was so overwhelming that they had forsaken their chapter and wished only to earn redemption via the destruction of the never ending foes of the Emperor. The marines were called 'Black Shields'.

Most Space Marines know and acknowledge their own worth in the battle against the Emperor's enemies - not the Black Shields. They are noted for being very reckless, yet at the same time self sacrificing, since they show no hesitation or fear when putting themselves in the path of danger. On the battlefield, they fight without a care for personal injury and in a Black Shield's mind he is as good as dead already. As such, they will always volunteer for the most dangerous missions without a second thought.

The story hit a chord, and after discussing it for several days, the veterans came up with a way to absolve their guilt as part of a regiment of mercenaries and veterans from all corners of the Imperium. Offering redemption in the fires of constant battle and volunteering for missions only an astartes would enjoy.

The veterans took it to the Planetary Governor with a solution to the predicament of rebuilding the reputation of Hyades in the imperium, and meeting the Imperial Tithe after the significant losses incurred during the conflict. Failure to deliver the Imperial Tithe is met harshly. Even the slightest breach in protocol will often result in the execution of the Planetary Governor and a swift and thorough regime change. The Planetary Governor understood this and eagerly agreed to the solution on offer, offering ongoing supplies and equipment, along with a small contingent of local recruits.

So it was, that in late M41 a new regiment was formed from veterans of the planetary defence force, 'The Black Shields of Hyades'. These troopers dedicated themselves to the destruction of the Emperor's enemies, whether Xenos, Traitor or Heretic.

Recruitment and Training

The Black Shields of Hyades are regularly reinforced by grizzled mercenaries or dissatisfied veterans recruited from other imperial guard regiments. Due to the high risk missions they regularly undertake, the need for new troopers is constant.. but they have a growing reputation as a battle hardened regiment of veterans, where actions speak louder than words. Once reconnaissance is done and the decision has been made to act, they strike hard and fast, taking the fight to the enemies of mankind. Dispatching recruiters far and wide, the Black Shields have taken influxes of recruits from all backgrounds and corners of the Imperium.

One consequence of this diversity is that is has enabled the Black Shields of Hyades to adapt to situations more readily than other regiments, with diverse strategems discussed in training and later employed on the battlefield. Similarly, strong willed leaders have risen to the top, as the diversity would otherwise lead to disagreements when assimilating recruits from so many backgrounds and cultures.

Supplies and equipment are regularly transported from Hyades. Being a mining colony on a hostile jungle planet, they make use of the surplus equipment on hand which has been generously bequethed to them by House Belisarius. Equipment like Hades Breaching Drills from the mines, small armoured Centaurs for clearing the vegetation around a settlement and the Valkyries used to transport miners over the jungle. They also contribute a yearly tithe of recruits from the local population. These Hyadens make about around a quarter of the regiment's total numbers. Naturally skilled in hunting and tracking in their Jungle environment, the Hyadens tend to produce formidable marksman that grow up practicing on the fast and agile "Reptos".

A small group of Black Shields also ride genetic and cybernetically augmented Wolves, trained and bred from descendants of blackmaned Fenrisian Wolves (a particularly vicious breed). The original wolves were left behind on historic visits of the Space Wolves chapter and Blood claw packs occasionally travel to Hyades to train and test their hunting skills in hostile Jungle environments. The large wolves, though small in number, have since adapted to their jungle environment, and are a another terrifying jungle predator that the locals need to watch out for.

----------

The Black Shields have recently seen action with Captain Kaedes and the Raptor's 6th Company in Task Force Green. They share similar combat doctrines with the Black Shields and the 6th have found their assistance invaluable when operating behind enemy lines in ambush and reconnaissance missions. The Raptors homeworld is deep within the dense stellar drifts of the Sutters Spiral Nebula on the northern border of the Segmentum Solar, not too far from Hyades, which is in the far south of the Segmentum Obscurus.

This is the list I came up with last night to represent them, allying with a strike force of Blood Angels.

It's a mixture of regiments within each detachment, so regimental doctrine won't apply, but they do get access to their <regiment> strategems. I've included the keywords so you can get an idea on what strategems and orders I would tend to use.

Goal was to take a highly flexible list that can potentially be used in competitive play at 1750 points, where I can adapt which 50% of the army to keep in reserve, based on the opponent, mission and terrain. 85 Reinforcement points left over for an assassin.

Would love to hear your thoughts on it's strengths and weaknesses.

Had a rethink around the Shadowsword, the list had heaps of anti titan / anti tank, but would struggle to whittle down hordes. I also didn't have enough troops for objectives.

Relying more on the BA Captain and Libby Dread for the anti titan / anti tank role would mean I need plenty of CP for the strats. So consolidated the guard into a Brigade.

I think this will be a more effective list to work towards. More work though, lots more bodies... I'm doing it all with space marine scout bodies and various cadian parts.

Deployment plan would be to put Yarrick out of LoS with the Heavy Weapon Squads so they all get the re-roll 1s from turn 1. 220pts

Then seperately deploy the 2x Centaur Light Assault Carrier each with a Grenadier Storm Squad and 1 of the Astropath or Inquisitor inside them. Grenadier Heavy Weapons Team only takes 1 spot in a transport. After their 9" scout move, they will ideally have as much LoS blocking cover as possible. 382pts

Nearby I would position all the Blood Angels units (with the exception of the Reivers). 479pts

After their first turn move, I need to make sure the 2x Centaurs and Company Veterans (ideally in cover) are closer to the enemy, so the Characters can't be targeted. Infantry Characters ideally also in cover to avoid snipers.

The Centaurs are probably close enough by then for the infantry to hop out and hide in a ruin, protecting their designated psyker, who are also in range. These guys would also be responsible for flushing out scout units with flames and a charge, then consolidate into hiding.

Everyone else (possibly including the chosen assassin) would be setup in reserve for a turn 2 drop.

Death Riders setup behind cover and attempt a 9" charge where possible (avoiding overwatch), alternatively they use 'Move! Move! Move!' to position themselves for a charge next turn. Remembering they can charge through terrain without penalty.

Against Knights, CAVALRY can trap them in combat until the Smash Captain or Librarian Dreadnought arrive. The 2 Death Rider Commanders can also use their demo charges. The Company Veteran Seargent and Sanguinary Ancient have Power Fists and Inferno Pistols to help out too. Ideally I first get Eisenhorn in range for Dominate, which I imagine would be fun on a Knight too.

Plenty of -leadership aura's and Psychic powers to cause morale issues when everything hits in turn 2.

Elysian Drop Trooper Squads can be placed on objectives or strategic locations, each with their own Platoon Commander (who also has Melta Bombs).

Lore is great!

Mixing regiments will mean no Regimental Doctrines though?

Can't wait to see some painted models :biggrin.:

Yeah I'm going to mix Elysian with Death Korps, and the Catachan Heavy Weapons Teams will have Harker for re-rolls (don't need +1 STR) so no regimental doctrine to worry about!

Tested building a flamer with a sm scout body, and an sm scout biker body on a cyberwolf. Looks like it should all be possible.

First squad of Death Riders on Wolves are nearly done, just waiting on the Lances to arrive from Shapeways. Will post pics once they're built.

Also updated the list I'm working towards, not bringing any Marines now, and the only non-guard unit is Inquisitor Eisenhorn.

Very unusual list though... lost of units I think will look cool, but I'd be interested in whether you think it will be competitive?

+ Flyer +

2x Valkyries [8 PL, 117pts]
. Tempestus Drop Force
. Valkyrie: Hellstrike Missles, Multi-laser

++ Total: [125 PL, 1975pts, 11CP] ++

For 1 of the Valkyrie, move 19" and drop them 9" from the screen. Option to drop the other unit behind the enemy deployment if there is a gap, using Precision Drop for 1CP. They can all move, shoot, then charge after disembarking.

For the Scions, they can drop within 12" of a prime target in Turn 1, even if it means using Precision Drop. Then we get 16 Overcharged Plasma Shots, hitting on 2+, re-rolling 1s (from Yarrick) and getting an extra hit on a 5+. Depending on placement and whether they have Psykers in a position for it to work, one of the Tempestors (with the Cypra Mundi Null-Emitter) can be dropped out of LoS, but as the nearest unit to their Psykers, while the other Tempestor can order 2 units at a time.

Ideal scenario for Inquistor Eisenhorn is to get within 18" (dropping from one of the Valkyries) and cast Dominate on a Castellan turn 1 (assuming its a character), then Terrify to cancel overwatch on the Bullgryns charge target. Turn 2, he creates the Daemonhost (25 Reinforcement Points set aside for Cherubael) and casts Dominate on the Castellan again, then Terrify to cancel overwatch before you charge the Castellan.

So 1 Valkyrie has 4 Bullgryn, the other has Yarrick, Eisenhorn, 2 Tempestor Primes and 2 Scion Command Squads.

While my opponent is dealing with the Alpha strike, the rest of the army can focus on whittling down their screens with Mortars, Heavy Stubbers and Flamers. In the Astra Militarum Battalion we have a unit of DKoK engineers with flamers in the Assault Centaur for the 9" deployment move, these should be able to get in range turn 1 to disembark and use their flamers. They are accompanied by the Astropath (Engineer Heavy Weapon Teams only count as 1 spot in the transport). Ideally Astropath uses Psychic Barrier on the Bullgryn, getting them to 1+. Then in the backfield objectives we have 3 units of DKoK engineers with 2 Heavy Stubbers each and the 3 x 3 DKoK Heavy Weapons squads with Mortars.

In turn 2, the strike force will appear in the gaps that have been cleared with a Hades Breaching Drill (near a vehicle) and 3 x 5 DKoK Death Riders, 1 Death Rider Command Squad and 2 Death Rider Commanders. The Commanders also have demolition charges to help with Vehicles. Hopefully Yarrick and/or Eisenhorn have survived to assist their turn 2 reinforcements.

We also have an Assassin of choice appearing with the rest. Possibly even a Calidus to limit / maximise the opponents CP spend in turn 1 when they're dealing with the Alpha strike.

And if they have a Castellan or similar, first try to use it against their own troops, then try to block it moving out of combat with Valkyrie / Cavalry / Centaur / Breaching Drill. As to what can kill a T8 Titan/Vehicle in this list? Plasma Scions, Hades Drill, Bullgryn/Death Riders/Cherubael/Yarrick (wound it on 5s), Death Rider Demolition Charges x2, Elysian Krak Grenade x10 using Strategem. Priority should be wiping everything else first though.

Also, not sure if the Astropath is best with Psychic Barrier for the Bullgryn, Nightshroud on the Hard to Hit Valkyrie or Gaze of the Emperor to surprise them with some Mortal Wounds on key units after the turn 1 Valkyrie Alpha Strike in their backfield

The list sounds a little bit like a glass hammer, but that can be the most fun as it's all or nothing. Against more polished lists that have protection and pickets etc you'd probably struggle so it depends on how competitive you're thinking? For normal games should be fine and you'll be in with a shot, but perhaps not so much against stronger lists and codices.

Your right it could definitely be a glass hammer. Just counting on some of the strike units (riders, bullgryn, yarrick, eisenhorn, drills) to surprise people by surviving their counter-strike.

Likewise I'm assuming not everyone can fully screen 360 degrees around their key units on turn 1, and this list should be able to take advantage of that.

I've got a Deathwatch / BA / Loyal32 list that is aiming to be competitive though, for this one I want to build some cool models and have fun.

The drills etc fit the fluff well too :)

I've never magentised models before, but might look into it for the Bullgryn :)

Finished putting together the first 5 death riders today, the guy on the cyberwolf (far left) will be one of the commanders.

Plan is to paint the wolves black and the soldiers will pretty much follow the 'cadian shadow corps' colour scheme.

What do you think?

Your wolf riders show good imagination. Will you retain the plastic rings as reins, or replace them with green stuff reins- maybe a steering wheel or joystick, to demonstrate the "cyber" in cyberwolves?

Yeah the reins were a difficult one, I'm currently using the thinnest cable ties I can find, and was thinking of adding the odd accessory to it from the scout biker sprue.

I've never used green stuff so was looking for something I can buy that is rigid enough that it won't break.

Alternative was trying to get some kind of plastic string like this, but not sure if it's too thick or if the knot would look too messy.

Or something like this might work - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FQ8CFW7/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1
