Wip-753rd Solar Chort, 186th

Recommended Posts

Alrighty Heresy friends - I’m starting my solar auxilia Army and would like yalls opinion on my test models.

Infantry came basecoated green so it made sense to start there. I Have not layered the green yet and for thoughts on the metal color. Bronze or steel?

I have 3 airbrushes and 141 members of this cohort plus 6 dracosan, 1 Arvus, 2 termites, 2 infernus and 1 carnodon( currently) so am hoping to have a scheme easyish to do and visually striking on the board

I vote for steel with bronze details!

Thanks bulbafist! The more I’ve looked at the pics the more I like it- reminds me of my IW army and seeing as how the base metal is VMA gunmetal grey (which I conveniently have in a big jar) it will be an easy color to apply.

What’s your takenon the yellowish padding?

I’m kind of thinking about making that area offwhite but may need to do another test to see.

I’ll be using the bases they’re already on as I don’t like the idea of breaking this many guys off and pinning them to resin bases- but I may succumb to that madness as I like the heft resin bases process... decisions

I really like the yellowish padding! It's probably my favorite part actually.

Another thing you could try to mix things up: start with that tin colored base, then drybrush/sponge on the steel color. Might be worth trying.

- uh mah gawd!! I also just realized that there are no vexila’s or com’s dudes in the infantry... at all!? Luckily I’ll be able to rig that up with ease but it was a lil off putting ... also... the only skin shown in the whole army is the Spy scope dude. I’m ok with that as I’m not the biggest fan of painting skin and it really harkens to the fact that these dudes are operating in some pretty craptastic place for the whole cohort to be buttoned up.

The more I’m reading through the fluff the more I’m imagining just how hard case these solar auxila guys really are.

Haha, I love it! Welcome to the AUXILIA baby.

My own militia have about 300 models. I've painted probably 60. If anything go even brighter on the padded armor sections as it'll make the army pop more when on the table. Aux are def hardcore business dudes, so no flesh makes a lot of sense imo

300!?!?? That’s the perfect number;) your Spartans are proud! Can you post a link to yer dudes?

I’ve been working off and on with guard armies for years and had just started re-getting DKOK minis when I came

Across this SA army deal... I can admit I didn’t like the minis at first and picked a few up from bits sellers to add into a command squad section for another army and realized just how awesomely detailed each dude is.

I’m going to sell off the Korps again so I can buy another storm section and

Army them with rotor cannons audemus style. I’m glad I picked enough up before they dodo’d... I don’t have SA decals but found a Japanese fellow making nice Korps decal sheets so I’ll just use them and add in some FW IF decals since this cohort rolls with my Fists in defense of the ‘verse.

That is a wonderful shot of  basecoated dudes. A real man to go after the SA, keep it up!

A real man with a deep gratitude for his airbrush!!

All hail the might of a badger Krome!

Brush painting the armor segments on the top 2 guys took about 20 minutes each to get into all the nooks and crannies. I just basecoated the metals on an entire lasrifle section in 40 ... the dream may become a reality with more ease than anticipated!

Im running numbers for lists on battlescribe and to keep myself, my collective hobby collection and my relationship with my lady and her understanding of my hobby sane and safe I will be needing to streamline the SA fairly soon.

Query to the SA legates who have come before- what is our best go to AT? I want to stay mobile on the tabletop and

Know several dracosans are going to be in my list- (twin las on the rifle transports and 2 demos on the Veletaris-) I’ll have twin las cannons and 2 sponson las on the carnodon(1 currently and I’d like 2 more), I plan on running 2 infernus and 1 with chem munitions for med at and TEQclearing and I have a colossus on its way as the beginning of my arty squad.

What have y’all found to be effective spartan killers (other than air assets)?

Are your krieg assembled? Because I might be interested :smile.:

A command squad with grenade launchers is one of the best AT options due to haywire grenades. You got a few options of getting them to your target too, from the new drill transport to an arvus.

Ok, command squad maxed out with GL and then the enginseer with servitors armed with GLs as well(the techpriest unit is already on my project list so I’ll see about rounding up a few more command dudes as well. :)

I have 2 termites and am in wüv with the models!! The Arvus is going to go together and probably carry lascannons for lolz;)

Lol, my krieg dudes are still on the sprue but for a few guys- so much assembly and I’d thought about painting first and then assembling;)

I'm looking forward to seeing how these comes along as I love the models and am also looking at building and painting my own, though not nearly as many as you have.

In that regard I'd really be interested in hearing about good, efficient solutions to painting the Auxilia in larger batches with or without an airbrush, as I'm staring at 40 myself and sort of don't know how to approach them in the best way possible. Doing it all the traditional brush-way, just seem like it'd take forever with all the details they have. :-)

Audemus’ rust scorpions are the gold standard of SA (imho) and he brush painted every one of his and Dry brushed all of them. I’m excited to block them in with the airbrush and then try out the 20 new paint brushes I’ve picked up in the last few months for the detail work.

I’m fairly settled on the metals now and have decided to mix the decayed metal and steel at a 2/1 with a few drops of thinner and a few drops of flow improver.

My brush internals have some crud in them so I’m going to break it down tonight and give it a deep cleanse before I work up any more dudes.

They are extremely detailed minis and I was literally about to do a militia army with dkok grenadiers/ engineers and Elysian dudes with cadian respirator heads (been building the bits up for years) when I came into this army for a ridiculously good deal.

I’d picked a few SA guys up to add in as vets to my original force idea and enjoyed the look but now that I see them all laid out it’s an impressive and cool aesthetic

Bringing the cohort to color....at least the metals

gallery_32985_15295_244513.jpeg

here's the balance of the infantry....I was tempted to not paint them all and sell some but the appeal of so many glorious foot troops that aren't orkses it grand

gallery_32985_15295_86884.jpeg

basic troop colors...lenses will be red, I will bring some steel to the rifle barrel, gloves will be black- I just realized some of the dudes have exposed quilting on their lower backs...grrrr.... Ill go back for the backs when all the fronts are painted;)

gallery_32985_15295_313318.jpeg

Im contemplating unit and tercio markings... the SA decal sheet is so top it aint funny and I have noooooo desire anyways to decal each dude.

Ill be making up vexilas for each rifle squad and have a few ideas for antennae for each squad

back to the painting:)

I'm lovin' this, lionofjudah! I'll be following your thread closely. I'm just now bringing my own sub-cohort on line (allied with my Imperial Fists, of course) so I'm looking to you to lead the way. Can't wait to see how you incorporate Fists insignia with your dudes.

I’m looking forward to seeing your cohort... or chart as my phone lovingly decided to recode my data stream too.

*** (Anyone know how to edit titles??)***

Semper, perhaps you’re reading my mind but I will also be running my SA with my Fists :). Great minds think alike good sir;)

Plans are in action to build a true scaled marine detachment to act as the anvil force upon which the brute hammer of the auxilia will crush the foes of the throne.

My allergies are wrecking me right now- it was 6 degrees a week ago and it’s going to be almost 70 tomorrow. Tons of trees are blooming and freaking out so the pollen count is exploding.

Anyone not believing in climate change needs... nope, no politics intruding in my hobby time

Lil update time - here’s me olde enginseer techpriest and his SA bodyguard armed with grenade launchers

gallery_32985_15295_22274.jpeg

Close up of the volkite to GL conversion... not the cleanest of lines but I think it conveys the sentiment nicely;)

gallery_32985_15295_289345.jpeg

I’ll throw a harness of grenades on them somewhere

Looking good :D nice GL conversions too - was Overlord intense and goofy in a good way or bad way? Really fancied that film!

Thx reyner- overlord is intense in a Woo’ish kind of residenty evily way... so lots action sequences with a lotta blood and crazy super monster stuff in a compressed timeline- I’d of really liked another 30-45 minutes of movie o expand the plot and deepen the sense of impending doom of the invasion- they pretty much dropped the ball on dday being a huge part as soon as the start of the movie was over
