Gongsun Zan Posted March 6, 2019 Share Posted March 6, 2019 (edited) Anyone else picked this up yet? Got my collector's edition yesterday evening, and polished it off in a night. I've been craving for more World Eaters since Betrayer, and this really hit the nail on the head (bad pun intended). I think this is the Heresy at its best - we all know what's going to happen, but the real fun is getting inside the Legion's head as they decide whether or not to jump off a figurative cliff for their father. There's a surprising amount of reflection in their choice to take the Butcher's Nails - it's not just "because Angron says so" (although there's a fair amount of that as well). I'd say Ian St Martin accomplished exactly what he set out to do with this book. Easily a top 10 contender in the HH for me. Minor spoilers regarding Khârn and the collector's edition: Khârn covering three pages of the book in blood was gimmicky, but I absolutely loved it. I wonder if it's going to carry over to the regular prints. Tbh I don't see how they should do it otherwise. Just leave the space empty? Just a "blackout" and continue with the next paragraph? Would be sad if they'd do something like that. Allart01 Posted March 7, 2019 Share Posted March 7, 2019 (edited) This was pretty good! No hope, no redemption, just a tragedy that feeds and grows on itself. There are quite a few nice snippets of lore for the Butcher's Nails and even for the Warhounds - Mago is a pretty cool dude. I had some minor issues -mainly about the timing of some events- but this is the perfect summary for the tragic story of the XIIth Legion, though the experience is obviously improved by reading Betrayer, After De'shea and the most recent short story from St.Martin. Other than that, I saw a lot of inspiration from the tv series Spartacus Blood and Sand, the most obvious being an old menthor gladiator called Oenomaus. This didn't tamper my enjoyment in any way at all. It was perhaps a little too obvious at times, but it just made me smile. I tend to criticize more than I praise in my (few and short) reviews, but this felt like a really well planned and thought out book. The author took his time to think deeply about the themes of the World Eaters's fall in order to reall drive them home. I am very happy to have purchased the Limited Edition and I think that this book really captures what all the Primarchs series book should try to be. Definitely a must read for all World Eaters fans and one of the (if not THE) best book(s) in its series. I grabbed the cheapest one I could find on ebay. I'm not happy about it but I've bought all of them so far and it would've bothered me a lot more to be missing one than to stump up the extortionate price for it. The insights into Angrons life pre legion is masterfully done. I can’t work out why the Emperor doesn’t sanction the legion immediately after these events. If these guys get away with becoming monsters I have no idea what the unmentionable legions must have done. Anyway, well done Ian, he kept the focus on the key events in Angrons life and how that made the legion what it becomes. This is what a Primarch book should look like. My favourite of the series remains Lorgar but this easily ties for second place with Perturabo. Highly recommend folks. The degradation of the Legion was a process of years ! Both the Legion and Angron would have been better of had the Emperor chosen to let Angron die. For those who have read, without giving away spoilers (if you can), does it touch on why Emps teleported Angron away instead of...you know...maybe going down there and helping him win? Emperor probably figured not overtly interfering was the most expedient way to purchase their loyalty, while secretly teleporting Angron away also let him get his hands on a Primary. Magnus : prideful believed he had all the answers was told not to do something and did it anyway dooming humanity in the process Curze : A coward and nihilist at heart in that he foresaw what was going to happen but made no real effort to change it and took the lazy way out in regards to Nostromo something which Sevatar rightly rebukes him also went damn near catatonic with fearwhen Sanguinus almost changed his fate . Perturabo : Petulant manchild who actively worked to distance himself from the other Primarchs then wonders why nobody liked him Mortarion : pig stupid and gigantic hypocrite (even after 10000 years as a demon prince as evidenced in Plague war) Each of them could have made different choices but they did'nt Angron had no other choices.
