The Elara's Veil is ours! The Emperor's Spears

Wisdom without strength promises nothing but extinction"

Welcome all to the Elara's Veil. This is something I have wanted to do since finishing Spear of the Emperor again. I've had such a burning desire to paint my primaris space marines as Emperor's Spears.

First up we have some Reivers. I decided to start painting them up because I am really looking forward to the Shadowspear box. I have yet to apply any transfers to the models I have finished thus far mostly because I don't want to run out of them. You are also going to notice a variety of bare headed marines partly because I want to represent the cultural variety of Nemeton and attempt some red tattoos on their face that will inevitably look like very strange and horrible head wounds, but also because I like the diversity they bring to the squads.

The golden boltgun cases, black webbing and pouches are based on the artwork and the clear plastic layer pages (pages that layer on top of each other showing the breakdown of the armour from fully armed to a a muscled Astartes with just a loincloth) of the index Astartes.

Next up with have some Intercessors with Stalker Bolt Rifles. You can just make out a my attempt at a tattoo on the marines' face. Initially I was going to mark these guys up as Paragons so they could as they tend to focus on commanders or champions being a somewhat secretive brotherhood.

A common theme will be the lack of helmet crests of my sergeants, purely because I only have two lying around from my MkIII marines that I didn't use on my Thousand Sons. So it may only be the Warleader (Captain) and Battleguards (Lieutenants) that end up with crests.

Now to try and keep true with the Index Astartes the Spears in that Firstborn and Primaris mix freely in a Warhost and no distinction is made between them, even going as far to fight in mixed units. Obviously rules wise harder to pull off but I wanted to add some Firstborn marines to the army. So far I have a devastator and a Vanguard veteran, with the veteran being painted up as Paragon. The inverted trident on his helmet isn't as clean as I'd like due to the crux right in the middle of it.

That is everything completed or nearing completion so far. My personal favourite so far is the helmeted reiver. I am currently working on the rest of the Reivers and I am planning on finishing off my Repulsor's turret before moving onto the main hull of the tank.

Woo! More Spears is always good.

I like the paint job. Crisp and clean.

:biggrin.: Thanks! The white at times hasn't felt very crisp.

Nice clean work, I really like the inverse trident on the veteran's helm, I can imagine the Crux was an irritance whilst doing it though!

It was. I had to go much wider with the trident design more of a bent fork look to it. Thankfully the remaining four veterans have a little more room on their helmets.

As I am going away for the next few days I figured I'd leave some more pictures of my current works in progress and the finished Intercessor squad with Stalker Bolt Rifles.

I had some finishing touches to apply to these guys. As you can see I have changed how i've been painting the gold weapon casing and how I'm doing the eye lenses since I last painted these guys up (compare the the reivers from the OP). Next up are my WIPs which includes the remaining three knife wielding reivers and a lieutenant aka Battleguard.

The last WIP I'd like to share is my Apothecary.

Now you might be scratching your head at this an apothecary in black armour? Well, the clean delineation of Librarian, Apothecary, Chaplain and Techmarine don't exist in the Emperor's Spears. They all go to war clad in black armour and white helms. All of them are druids and the three orders of expertise are also trained in the arts of an apothecary. All of them no matter their primary role as either a chaplain, librarian or techmarine goes to war with the tools of an apothecary. So there are some fun modelling opportunities to be had with the Druidic orders.

Well I'm back from my Holiday and whilst I have yet to put brush to paint I do have some pictures of some new additions the the Spears' ranks.

First up is my Firstborn Battleguard. He's somewhat an amalgamation of kits and my first proper attempt at green-stuffing a cloak. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out on the third/fourth attempt. The helmet is currently not fixed in place as I don't think I'd be able to replicate the battle damage and crisp white I achieved. All it needs is some black strips adding to the crest to mark him out as a Battleguard.

My narrative goal with the Firstborn Battleguard named Emrys, is that he is the experienced veteran to the less experienced Primaris Warleader. He is old to have lived through the increasing burdens upon the Emperor's Spears as the Andronctonus Astra (Star Scorpions) were lost to the warp and the Celestial Lions were devastated by Inquisitorial treachery.

Lastly I have four Firstborn tactical marines. I assembled these chaps primarily the keep my Spear's force varied with a mix of Firstborn and Primaris marines.

I'm planning to finish off the last of the Reivers that I pictured in my previous by the end of the week and then to continue with the Apothecary.

Thanks for looking.

Really interesting bit of lore regarding the druidic orders making up the various specialists within the chapter. I like the ideas behind the Firstborn acting as guides and advisors to their newer, less experienced brethren.

The Index Astartes that ADB wrote is really excellent with the information it provides about the Spears. The idea of the Firstborn acting as advisers seems fitting to me as many of the Primaris marines that the Spears create aren't likely to have more than 100 years battle experience and that will mostly be from fighting the Exilarchy and the Pure.

I don't have a painting update today but I do have a WIP warleader that I kitbashed together after my cat decided to hide my Veteran Sergeant's head, thankfully I have a spare Mk III helmet with a crest to replace the resin Mk IV. He has been demoted as I forgot that Transverse crests represent sergeants and longitudinal represent battleguards, Warhost Lords, and the High King.

I've kitbashed Warleader / Battleguard (not decided yet) Corraidh
