Primaris Squad Size

Big apologies if this topic has already been attacked before lads but genuinely cannot find any good answer to this question. What is the lore backed squad size of primaris marines?

 

Do intercessors run ten man squads like their tactical counterparts? Do hellblasters run ten like the devastators? 

 

I feel like the phobos pattern units like reivers and the new infiltrators that question has been answered with the shadowspear box set as its a ten man unit in the box but is the same true for their other brothers?

Pretty sure it's still 10.

The better question is what's the actual squad size of units that come as 3 minimum like Aggressors, Inceptors and Eliminators? ^^

Given that they can run 10, I'd have to assume 10 is the proper size... its like tactical squads can be just 5, but go up to 10.

 

Problem is the snapshot in the codex of UM 2nd company... which implies proper intercessor squad size is just 5... which makes little sense when they can go to 10.

 

See that company snapshot has me confused too because if they are to be the replacement of classic marines having smaller numbers seems so silly. I think when I go to build my battle company I'll go with 10 man units. Cheers for the response mate.

Probably because it brings them very close to the usual 5 man units with their 6 wounds in total so the cost for a 3 man Primaris squad with heavy weaponry should be similar to the classic 5 man squad with heavy weaponry. At 5 man they might be too expensive to squeeze them into many lists and people like having a variety of different units in their army even if it's not always the most ideal list building decision.

That is true. I guess on that note Centurions are 3 man squads so its not so unnatural.

If it has the combat squad rule I’d call that an indicator max squad size is suppose to be 10. I can’t abide the 3/6 unit sizes so I just use them at 5 and call it a quirk of my Chapter.

 

3 model size units due too easy anyway.

The squad size is 10 for administrative purposes. For combat operations purposes, it's actually most likely devided to 5 men squads operating very close to each other in order to have some flexibility.

 

Example : you are charged by Khorne Berserkers, squad would be separated in 2 5 men squads, the role of one being the first line to slow down while the second squad provides supporting fire.

 

First squad kills some Berserkers before dying gloriously, and 2nd squad has basically twice the time to shoot and less targets to shoot at while the first one dies gloriously.

 

Example 2 : you are pushing a trench held by Guardsmen, you actually want to push forward as a single unit in a narrow space to concentrate your fire and clear guys. No need and no real benefit to divide.

 

Military strategy is about combining and decombining the appropriate force size at the proper time and point, based on operational needs. Even at modern squads level, most militaries employ a squads made up of 2 fire teams each led by a fire team leader. During maneuver and logistics, the sergeant doesn't need to have the 2 squads operating independently, but during combat scenarios it may be beneficial.

 

I'm more familiar with antique strategies, so if I said some stupid stuff above, I'll let real modern soldiers correct me :P

Nobody was questioning that.

Squads in companies aren't even specific units like Assault Squad and Devastator Squad etc but rather battlefield roles like Battleline Squad and Close Support Squad etc.
