AT terrain. What to use?

Recommended Posts

Like the title says. When i take a look at the GW homepage there´s only one set of terrain aviable. I know more will follow. But what alternatives do we have? What did you use for your battlefield?

I have been using that one box, and then a mix of other 40k items that do not look out of place.

Compared to most of GWs terrain line the AT stuff is affordable and easy to build some interesting and good looking buildings.

A quick search for 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm terrain will yield quite a few results, but here are a few:

So far, a mix of civitas imperialis, old Epic ruins, old FW Epic buildings, old Cities of Death components, foamboard, plasticard and various other bits (incl. old milk bottles). Don't hesitate to check my project log for some examples.

For those looking at the OTP Terrain in the above list, if you have a 3D printer, I can only recommend checking the source of these designs. They can be found on:

https://warlayer.com/

There is also a list of the licensed printers (with a wider geographical spread). There is a FB group where many do print these designs for AT, so recommendations for sizing can be found there or simply ask the designer directly.

I don't have a 3D printer yet but I nevertheless grabbed the Zone One - Late Pledge at USD50 as well as a couple others.

I also came across the "Dark Gothicus" terrain made by DarkOps in the UK, the interesting element is that each building comes with both an intact and a destroyed version

https://www.darkops.co.uk/collections/dark-gothicus

There is also the Dark Assembly range by https://scenics.warcradle.com/

https://scenics.warcradle.com/red-beam-products/dark-assembly-8mm-city

https://scenics.warcradle.com/red-beam-products/dark-assembly-8mm-factory (there are some pics on Instagram with a Cerastus knight inside of the factory, can't find the link)

and the 4Ground micro-scale range https://www.4ground.co.uk/scifi-micro

From Game Craft there is also a 6mm range e.g. http://gcmini.mybigcommerce.com/6mm-european-city-buildings/?sort=newest&page=1 where you can find a couple of interesting buildings (matboard ruined and intact buildings, Stalingrad factory, airship hangar, …). The matboard buildings have relatively few details but adding plasticard buttresses improves them a lot.

Look around your house, you're bound to have some spare piping, cans and such which can be readily turned into terrain with a slap of paint.

For buildings I print the facade in paper and stick it over cardboard structures.

Insulation boards are ideal for hills, craters and the kind.
