Primaris questions from an old Wolf

As some of you will no doubt remember I have been adamant about not adding Primaris to my Space Wolf army. I absolutely hate the fluff behind them and wish they had simply been called true scale marines and left it at that.

I had a private discussion with a GW employee last week that changed my mind. It was made very clear to me that regular marines might still be allowed in future editions but the model range was effectively dead. The Primaris in all current and future versions are the way forward.

I was left with two options: either stick with my classic army and watch it be made more and more obsolete or go with Primaris to start adding it into my existing army.

So with a heavy heart I am doing just that. As I've honestly not paid any attention to them up this point I have some questions I hope my wolf brothers can help with.

1. Intercessors: does the squad sarge really not come with a bolt rifle of any kind? He literally only has a bolt pistol and a melee weapon option?

2. Terminators: are there any Primaris terminator squads?

3. I am getting a friend to paint up the dark imperium set of Primaris and a Repulsor for me. I know the new box just came out but I'll have to wait on that for a second. Are there any other Primaris options that are too good to pass up?

4. I am getting a Repulsor because I like the model and it seems to have a ton of weapon options. I almost never see them played at my local store. What is wrong with Repulsors?  Can you only transport Primaris in them? Could I stick Wulfen and/or grey hunters into one?

5. The Redemptor dred is also rarely seen. Is it not any good? Looking at in battlescribe it seems to me that a FW dred or even a ven. dred would be a better option.

Appreciate any help brothers.

First up, most GW staff know as much as the rest of us about the long term plans for models and fluff etc, so don't write off your marines just yet.

The intercessor pack leader comes with a bolt rifle, a bolt pistol and grenades. He can then swap his rifle for a chainsword, powersword or powerfist. or he can take one of those as an extra weapon to his rifle, pistol and grenades.

Not sure why you would give up the rifle myself.

There are no 2+ save models, but the gravis armour gives your model +1 T.

Aggressors are pretty good, though my dice always fail me when I field them

The first thing you will notice is the primaris model itself looks amazing.

GW should have done away with tbe stupid primaris fluff and just upgraded all marines and said use old or new models but too late now

I dont have my codex in front of me but a quick google search shows a screen shot with "each model is armed with a bolt rifle"

If you are basing your fear off BS look in a codex

No primaris terminators

Only primaris can go in the repulsor, and you don't see them very often because they suffer the same issues as landraiders.

And I think the redemptor is a bit over costed.

I haven't played with a repulsor or a redemptor so those two are just what I have heard.

I'm confused. The Intercessor squad sarge gets a bolt rifle plus a power fist or chainsword or power sword? Or does he give up the rifle to get the bolt pistol and the melee weapon? If you can have a bolt rifle plus a melee weapon why wouldn't you do that?

Personally, I'm building a few primaris units, wolfing up the standard kits. They are cool minis, and mostly a good blank canvas to add stuff too.

There might be a time when old models are obsolete, but I think it will be a way off if it happens.

Duno, it's odd, but that's the way it's worded.

1. No, you're good don't worry.

2. Aggressors and they can be great, never played them but a good tactic is to drop them in middle-ish of the board into cover and sit there pouring out tons of fire. Their key is to make them not move so they double the shots

3. Potentially the new eliminators

4. Too costly, like LR.

5. 4+ to hit when it moves, volume of fire goes down considerably, its big so that in game terms its hard to hide, and costs too many pts for what its supposed to take out. Not that bad in smaller games where a Leviathan is too expensive.

Repulsors are quite expensive for what they bring to the table and can only Transport PRIMARIS units. However, they got a price cut in Chapter Approved which makes them a bit better. Also their frag launchers can be replaced with Storm Bolters which benefit from the new "Bolter Discipline" rule which basically doubles their long-ranged firepower. If you are taking Primaris infantry, I would say Repulsors are definitely worth a look now. Whilst not top-tier perhaps, the recent changes and their FLY rule puts them ahead of Land Raiders in many situations.

5. The Redemptor dred is also rarely seen. Is it not any good? Looking at in battlescribe it seems to me that a FW dred or even a ven. dred would be a better option.

Similar to the Repulsor, it was overpriced when first released but got a hefty discount in Chapter Approved 2018. The best build is the anti-infantry configuration with Heavy Onslaught Gatling Cannon, regular Onslaught Gatling Cannon and storm bolters. This guy now costs 155 points and puts out 26 S4/5 shots at 24", even on the move. This is not bad if you want to stop horde units from drowning you in bodies.

That said, I do think our own Dreads are better most of the time. The anti-horde role is the only place where a Redemptor really shines and we do have other units that can do that job pretty well too (the Repulsor for example). In short, only get the Redemptor if you like it. The price cut has made it viable (if not competitive) but it is certainly not a must-have unit.

  • 3 weeks later...

For the pack leader giving up his rifle, it's GW taking the "no models no rules" thing to extremes. You can model the pack leader without a rifle so you get rules for it. Makes no sense but there is a "reason" behind it.

Wulfen will be around for a long while. Remember they only came out just before 8th hit, Primaris would have been a thing while they were being designed and they're as big as Primaris. Wouldn't be surprised if they turn out to be the first Space Wolf "Primaris" unit in reality. I suspect a few other models will be in for the long haul as well (assuming the old style marines are going to stop being supported soon which I doubt, may not get any new models though) such as the Storm Wolf. No reason that couldn't just be allowed to transport Primaris in a future codex.

If it helps the models are fantastic, they really are, and just ignore the fluff.
