Factions with codices in respect to variable keywords?

Recommended Posts

Can specific factions (say, Space Wolves or Death Guard) who have unique models and model sets, as well as their own Codex, take <CHAPTER> or <LEGION> models respectively, or are they restricted to the models in their Codex? As an example, can Death Guard take Noise Marines (as an Elites option, obviously, because Death Guard aren't Emperor's Children) or Space Wolves take Captains, despite having Wolf Lords?

Edit: Whoops, Furioso Dreadnoughts actually do not have the <CHAPTER> keyword. Thought they did. Apologies. Swapped out the example.

No. Death Guard can't take any option from the CSM codex unless it also appears in their own. They can take Forge World models with the Legion keyword, but that keyword must then become Death Guard.

Well...kinda?

You can take Noise Marines and Death Guard units together in the same detachment, however since you can't give Noise Marines the Death Guard keyword it would be a mixed Heretic Astartes detachment and thus gain none of the Legion benefits. ^^

However what you are actually seem to be asking is whether you can give Codex: Chaos Space Marines units with the <LEGION> faction keyword the DEATH GUARD faction keyword (and similar for other factions). The answer is no.

A unit in a Codex has only access to the faction keywords in said Codex. Codex: Death Guard is completely separated from Codex: Chaos Space Marines for everything that goes beyond the CHAOS, HERETIC ASTARTES and the NURGLE faction keywords.

I wonder. Does that mean they can't take the new Daemonkin models either?

That's right. Unless they had access to the unit already in their Codex or get explicitly mentioned in the Shadowspear box to be able to use them, they can't. It's a Codex: Chaos Space Marine release, not a Codex: Death Guard release. ;)

This would also mean Death Guard are stuck with the Daemon Prince of Nurgle rules (Disgustingly Resilient, no Warp Bolter). Lame.

That's a different case. Here the Index ruling applies. They have access to either the Daemon Prince of Nurgle from their own Codex and the Daemon Prince from the Index (no DR, but Warp Bolter instead of Plague Spewer).

Yeah, really. ^^

You gotta read the FAQs and Erratas, dude.

Change the first bullet point to read:
‘• This model may either take a plague spewer, or it may
replace its hellforged sword with a daemonic axe or a
second set of malefic talons.’
